I’m none too big a fan of the German translation of the Stormlight Archive, but there’s one thing that German does incredibly well: the two German forms of address (“du” for family, friends, and children, and “Ihr” for people of high rank; the modern “Sie” for strangers is generally not used in Fantasy as it came up in modern times). “Du” has another component: not just familiarity, but also disrespect.

The translator made the choice to use the respectful “Ihr” for the lighteyes, and “du” not just for friends and family, but for all darkeyes in general, and it hits so hard. Whether as a slave or as captain of Dalinar’s guard, Kaladin is matter-of-factly addressed as you would a child, just because his eye colour means more to people than the uniform. It feels incredibly disrespectful and nobody, not even the darkeyes, blinks an eye. It’s a great translation choice and adds so much to the narrative.

This GODDAMN DELIGHT of a book is the best FUCKING fairy tale about covid and q anon and being afraid of breathing and being afraid of lying to people you love and being afraid of people who won't believe the truth in front of their fucking eyes and GODDAMN if it doesn't tell me every thing I want to hear about humanity and how we just have to deal with our neighbors even though they're wrong and being stupid and also it has Rodents Of Unusual Loquaciousness (on purpose) and it is very specifically for millennials/gen X in the same way Deadpool and Wolverine was for us (only family friendly) and also i hope to Whomever is Above, Below or Chtulu under the sea Rob Reiner is able to direct this movie.

This book is about pirates like the Shining is about haunted hotels.

I think Szeth's backstory chapters did a good job of covering almost everything we'd need to know about him (honestly you really only need the first couple, being told "he's autistic, and he likes dancing" explains like 98% of the character) but how the hell did he become fluent in every language under the sun?

Some people are just really good at languages. And when you live somewhere with full immersion... You pick up on language a lot, and that kind of just translates to "storms, that Shin guy is really good with languages!"
