“Veganism is a first world luxury” - Think again.

veganism is a first world luxury. the first thing i would like to point out is, going off the top of my head, the definition of veganism: to abstain from the use of animal products as much as possible as practical as one can. One major thing i have seen throughout the vegan community is the outrage they express when a vegan from a first or perhaps even second world is traveling and their destination is just flat out not able to provide a completely plant based diet/vegan lifestyle. lets say for example, one is going to an island or a jungle where these options are just a little tougher. by the definition of veganism, said person has to eat a food that may include cows milk in it because whether you like to acknowledge or not, there are parts of the world that have to work with their immediate resources. and by that logic, taking into account the definition of veganism as well as not ignoring reality and realizing that not everywhere has the privilege of choice; one is still by definition, a vegan even if they are drinking cows milk because that is doing the best that they can. if one is in need of say, a shampoo and its a brand that is tested on an animal and they have to buy it because the choice is limited; and i have seen it. i’ve lived in two different countries and visited another and i know my friend has been to india, he told me it is the same, its hard being vegan because people out there are just trying to survive with what they have. i know for a fact that there are persian and turkish vegans out there living a fully plant based lifestyle, but i think vegans as a community need to stop with this outrage when other vegans agree that veganism is a first / second world luxury because the reality is, it is.

Animals are just as precious and beautiful and worthy to exist in this earth with us.

Non-vegans point to soy and say, “You’re eating estrogen!” which is not only false, but distracts from the fact that cow’s milk is literally full of female hormones. Dairy cows are pregnant 10 months out of the year, so the cow’s milk you are drinking is likely awash with pregnancy hormones. You are drinking breast milk from a pregnant 1000 pound animal. (x)

What else would it drink? A synthetic milk substitute. Almost all commercial dairy farms either take calves away from their mothers shortly after they’re born or if they’re boys they often just shoot them. Can’t have calves drinking their own mother’s milk when humans want to buy it now can we?

I understand that what you’re getting at here is that we should all respect each other’s opinion and let each other live our lives, and that’s fine, but the issue is that eating animals isn’t just a personal decision. Choices cease to be just personal when they effect other beings, and especially when they cause harm. Your decision to eat animals and animal products causes harm to our planet and will require the exploitation and death of thousands of animals over your lifetime. That is fact, not personal opinion. We can’t force our diet or beliefs on anyone, but you can’t expect not to be criticised if you act in a way which harms others.

It is not “cool” to fund slaughter of innocent sentient defenseless animals…

I wonder if people even think about what they are really saying.

I wonder why people really have such an issue with people living how they want to to sustain their healthy life style.

I wonder why the only people who seem to get butthurt over this post are vegan, When this post is also trying to protect vegans that have people who eat meat try and force their diets upon them.

Because if your choices have a victim, you should get called out. It’s called a sense of humanity and morale. Where do we draw the line at personal choice? I could go out and massacre a school and nothing and no one should punish me because hey. Morality is subjective.

Thats not the world we live in. We know right from wrong and killing a sentient being, or supporting an industry that kills and exploits and torments a sentient being FOR you is no better.

Change is hard, breaking a cycle and traditions and habits are hard. But its not an excuse to continue an evil pattern.

Every single choice you make when it comes to every industry has a victim. Sex slaves are trafficked with airlines but are you supporting the sex Slave industry by taking that flight to Paris for your reading week? What about all the farmers being paid pennies a day to farm all the vegetables and other alternatives vegans are trying so hard to push into everyone?

There’s a huge difference between breaking a law and eating a steak and the fact that you tried to compare the two is astoundingly ridiculous.

No one is evil for eating meat, not everyone can sustain or afford a vegan or vegetarian diet and you shouldn’t demonize them for it. Veganism is a privilege not everyone can have.

What a load of shit, honestly. Yeah, theres problems in other industries but theres movements against that too. And please don’t even try to pin all the blame on vegans for the exploitation or hard work that goes into making vegetables. Unless you have never eaten a vegetable in your life just shut the fuck up, honestly. It’s pathetic how you anti vegans only use that in this argument. Excuse the fuck out of me but what makes humans so special that they are the only species that can get raped, murdered and exploited and have it be something worth speaking about? THAT is ridiculous. Not my comparison. Humans are not as special as they would like to believe. We’re literally killing our own planet because of animal agriculture.

I never said anyone is evil for eating meat. I simply meant to say this pattern, supporting these EVIL INDUSTRIES is not a good way to continue.

People in first and second world countries can most certainly go vegan and thrive especially if they do it smartly. Maybe you should actually educate yourself and try it before you spout bullshit. Thanks.

It should be our duty as the “most evolved species in this world”. We need to acknowledge how terrible we are for abusing the right of our fellow species, accept our mistakes, move on and actually do something about it. I think most people are inherently good at heart and that goodness should not have limits. Protect animals, they are voiceless and helpless and it is not fair and not at all right for us to take advantage of that.

Lmao this is so fucking dumb. Your kids might live longer if you keep them locked in the basement with lots of fun games but you don’t have the right to do that. They have minds, they have instincts, and they have a right to use them. My cats don’t go in the street, ever, and they come when I call them because I spent time training them instead of deciding I had the right to limit their entire world to my fucking apartment.

If you don’t feel like you can provide an appropriate environment for a cat to be properly stimulated, then don’t get a cat. Cats do have instincts, you’re right, and that’s a massive part of the problem. What we have are hundreds of thousands of non-native, invasive predators who are decimating local wildlife populations and driving local wildlife to extinction, through no fault of their own, just because their owner is allowing them to pursue their “instincts.” No one is saying they need to be inside all the time, you can get a leash and train them on it, construct a proper outdoor enclosure for them, simulate their natural environment inside- whatever it takes. Just don’t let them wander around unsupervised doing whatever they like, because it’s just not responsible.

High key horrified that a vegan is advocating keeping cats inside the vast majority of the time because you can have fun stuff in a house. Are you fucking kidding me? Golly I sure wish I could go outside but no several dangling strings and a cat tree should do it. I could turn my home into a full on cat mansion and it wouldn’t be 1/17th as interesting as twenty minutes outside a day. My cats killed a mouse once in their two years of life, you’re right, that’s definitely earned them lifetime imprisonment. They’re companions, not toys.

Then have them outside for twenty minutes a day? In an enclosure, on a leash, or off it if you can train them properly not to wander. For the second time now, I’m not saying cats can’t go outside, I’m saying that when they do they should be supervised. Is that really such an unthinkable and cruel proposition? That we should supervise our cats when they’re outside? The same way we do with dogs, and turtles, and rabbits, and pretty much every other domesticated animal? I feel like I’ve been very clear about what the alternatives are, but you seem to be interpreting my statements as if I’m arguing that cats must be inside at all times, which isn’t at all what I’ve said.

Just to clarify, I am not an outlier here and this is not at all an unusual opinion for a vegan to hold. I’m fully willing to have a civil conversation with you about this because I recognize that it’s a contentious issue, but honestly it doesn’t sound like you’re even reading what I’m saying; it seems like you decided on what my position was before you started talking to me. All I’m doing here is advocating for what I think is in the best interests of animals, the same as you are.

Personally I’m conflicted about this. I think it should be balanced. We’d never let our cats outside during the night, but we do for a couple of hours on days where it’s not raining. My youngest is terrified of cars and people so he likes to stay in our big backyard. Our oldest does leave the backyard, but he always comes back. I think as a vegan we should have compassion, and when you’re babies are crying to go outside, don’t keep them locked up.

Keeping them secure is not keeping them locked up? Hell you can make a fenced in back yard cat proof. Jackson Galaxy did it with a patio to keep their cat from taking off into the neighbors yard. That giant cat rescue has fences to keep them secure. Build a sunroom, an enclosed porch. Don’t toss them outside unsupervised and call it good. If your cat is scared of things like cars or people that is all the more reason to keep them secure. You are asking for trouble.

If you bothered to read what I said I already explained my youngest does not go outside of the backyard! My oldest however, does. He has been for two years and we’ve never run into any problems. Also, don’t tell me how to be a parent thanks, I know what my babies need and I listen to them 😂

Letting your cat outside unsupervised is highly dangerous. Your cat is at risk of:

• Getting lost

• Getting stolen

• Being hit by a car

• Eating something toxic

• Being attacked, or even eaten, by predators (wolves, coyotes, bobcats, dogs, snakes, owls, foxes, alligators, etc.)

• Getting in fights with other cats, who may even be feral

• Contracting and spreading disease and parasites

• Being hurt or killed by cruel people (being poisoned, used as bait by dogfighters, being used for ritual sacrifice, etc. I live in Texas, where if your animal is causing a problem in a rural area, people WILL shoot it and don’t give a fuck)

• Dying of thirst or hunger

• Dying of exposure (freezing to death, overheating, etc.)

• Drowning

Also, I noticed that you have made posts about your concern for endangered species, and as @acti-veg has stated, outdoor cats are disastrous for the environment because they are causing the extinctions of local populations of birds, rodents, lizards, etc. If you claim to care about the environment and about conservation, you should really rethink your stance.

It’s not that hard to supervise your cat when they’re outside. Why do pro-outdoor cat people just adamantly refuse to put the smallest amount of effort into this? You don’t have to get defensive. Just stop letting your cats outdoors by themselves and try to come up with some better ways to keep them entertained and stimulated.

My cat is rivals with the neighborhood cat and we’ve recognized this so we’ve reduced his going out severely. Also, it’s summer so we don’t let them go out as much at the moment.

My deepest wish for this new year - may people realize and experience that animals are not here for us. Maybe in the olden days, when we did not have cars, tractors, trains, stores, supermarkets etc. there was no other way then to hunt for survival and to use them for transportation, all of this can be discussed ad infinitum. Today, with a few exceptions, we clearly do not have to use them anymore. They are not slaves and they are not food. They are precious important sentient beings entitled to life and freedom as much as anybody else. We have no right to enslave them and put them into factory farms or any farms for our consumption. Be it chickens or pigs or cows or dolphins or elephants or dogs or cats or turkeys or fish or rabbits or horses …. If you truly want this world to evolve and be a better, fairer, more just and lighter place, you have to also take action. Starting with your food, clothing and entertainment choices.

There is something I need to address though, specifically for the vegan community. I’ve seen a lot of bullshit vegan on vegan hate and I was sickened by this. It’s very disappointing that we as a community are already so divided from the rest of society but to have that happen WITHIN OUR OWN GROUP?! It’s fucking disgusting and disheartening to see. So heres some advice to you vegans: Don’t forget to be mindful, understanding and compassionate. There are vegans becoming vegan for all types of reasons and it is not your right nor is it in your best interest to make them feel like they are not worthy because they do not meet up to your standards of what veganism should be about. And don’t you dare... Don’t you DARE make vegetarians feel excluded because they are not “doing enough”. They are doing a lot more than someone who refuses to give up eating dead flesh. Get a grip, vegans! Don’t put on this “holier than thou” act because it makes you seem like a complete jerk and puts an even worse name on our movement. We are not a cult. I am pretty sure any vegan that has travelled and understands that veganism is indeed a privilege knows this already. You do get the deluded vegans who think they’re entitled to their lifestyle everywhere in the world, but those are just a few and if you’re under the impression I am one of them, you are sorely mistaken.
