The black sheep of Silverstone 🇬🇧
I’ve been to Silverstone the last three years and there is a feeling I cannot shake. Over that time I’ve sat in 5 different grandstands and stood in 3 different general admission points. This year I walked round the track on two different days.
Silverstone is the house that Lewis built, Lando has extended and George doesn’t even have a parking space!
It sounds cruel and to anyone who goes to their first British Grand Prix it seems impossible, till you have seen it with your own eyes.
Silverstone is a sea of Ferrari red and fluro. Papaya and old Lewis Mercedes and Hamilton Crew merch. Yes there are Mercedes fans, but it’s not being paired with a George cap.
On Friday this year I saw more Danny Ric fans than George fans. A driver that has been out of the sport for 2 1/2 seasons was more visible.
Silverstone is a strange beast. Lewis is god, Lando the heir to the throne, then it’s Max who the crowd support and appreciate. Charles, Oscar and Fernando are all more popular than George. Arguably I saw as many Racing Bulls shirts as George fans. The whole track is just quietly waiting for a reason to cheer Carlos. Last year the entire track erupted for Nico Hulkenberg’s podium. The cheer for him from Landostand was as loud as the one for Lando winning the race! And louder than for George finishing 2nd this year.
George’s home crowd does not throw their weight behind him. And all I can think is, he’s not played the game to make the British public love him. Lando has a magnetic personality. Pair that with the fact Lewis takes every single opportunity to tell the world how much he rates Lando and the British crowd said yes, we accept him too.
But it goes both ways. Lewis delivers for his home crowd year on year on year. 16 podiums, 9 of them wins.
Lando has been on the podium for the last 3 British Grand Prix, winning one of them. This year it was one step shy but he got up there for the sprint race. His investment in Landostand, which is now considered the best driver lead fan experience in F1 has cemented his place.
Even Ollie knows how to play the game. Praise Lewis at every turn, showing off for the Landostand in the Lego race was a genius move of, hi, I’m a fun guy too, you can like me as well.
George has attempted none of the above. Sadly his first Silverstone podium has been greeted with “hmmm the safety car robbed us of Lando being up there”. George doesn’t really have a brand like the three Brits I’ve already mentioned. And if Arvid is paying attention, by next year he will have a logo that stands out across the multiple merch stores like Lewis, Lando and Ollie.
The thing is George hasn’t really don’t anything wrong, he’s just not done some things well enough to have the huge fan support his fellow countrymen have. And that’s really sad at his home Grand Prix.
And don’t let the “booing” of Kimi make you think they were George fans or Mercedes are just not liked. Poor Kimi had wrong place wrong time syndrome all weekend. Being presented your pole position trophy by an unpopular politician and then driving the Lego race around MBS meant he was always around a boo aimed at someone else.
George needs to be careful because the commonwealth drivers are also trying harder than he is. Oscar did show the Landostand some love. The Aussie flags may have encouraged him to do so. However the driver that showed us the most love after Lando? Mr Liam Lawson.
I’m not sure at this point how George changes this.
