i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is âinternationalâ pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isnât our pride, itâs theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that âyou owe your rights to Black trans womenâ is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) MÄori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa donât even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we donât.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. iâm truly sorry that most of you donât see the negative impact your nationâs culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and cultureâs queer history, donât accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

Was going through old sketches and got jumpsacred by these concepts for SOD-era Lief and Jasmine. Imagining Jasmine does actually start caring about looking presentable but is exclusively interested in aura farming with menswear and Lief grows his hair out as an homage to his dad lol. And the facial hair is to cover up the worst of the scarring from the Masked Ones incident. It's still pretty visible over his right eye though. On the bright side I would think that having a king with some gnarly facial scars would lend Deltora a certain aura factor on the world stage.
Iâve been trying to share this since I found out. They are moving onto harassing people in Memphis.
Community members face retaliation for trying to spread the word out, a lawsuit alleges.
Everyone was lovely in getting the word out about Chicago and Minnesota. I want to spread that awareness for folk in tennessee.

some of you need to understand that people from the global south criticizing imperialism and the problems they suffer from as consequences of it's existence isn't invalidating the struggles marginalized communities in the imperial core have to go through
pointing out that citizens of the imperial core have privileges that come as a direct result of the oppression of the third world isn't denying that those same citizens can also be victims of the imperial core. these ideas can and do coexist
actually why is it so hard for all of you to understand this cause it's a very simple concept. it's literally just intersectionality. we say "gay men are prejudiced for being gay but still have privilege due to being men" and no one bats an eye but if you point out "hey even if you're marginalized in the US that still doesn't take away from the fact you benefit from imperialism just by virtue of living there" and suddenly all fucking hell breaks loose
Fuck it, Malice@Mii
So on my posts about racism or transmisogyny, I often see tags that basically say âI donât understand this but Iâm going to reblog it anyway.â If you see a âsocial justiceâ type post that you want to reblog but donât understand?
Donât.
I know this goes against everything youâre used to hearing on this website, but listen. Reblogging posts you donât understand is basically the equivalent of blindly repeating whatever youâre told. Even if youâre right, if you donât understand why youâre right, you could be spouting utter bullshit and you wouldnât even know it.
When I see âI donât know what this means but Iâm gonna reblog it anywayâ it sends a lot of messages. It says that you care more about seeming right than being right. It says that you want good ally credit without any of the work of being a good ally. It says youâre on my side because I can make a post sound good, not because you actually agree with me on anything beyond the surface level.
So instead of just reblogging that post, save it for later. Like it, draft it, bookmark it, whatever. Go to the opâs blog and skim through a couple of pages, see if you can find some context. If the post is old, you could try asking for context in a non-condescending way. âIs this post referring to something specific?â is a lot better than, say, âDoes this even happen? Iâve never heard of this.â
If that doesnât help, do some more research. Google, search tumblr tags for recent posts on a subject, ask people who have EXPLICITLY stated they are willing to educate. Maybe in the process youâll find more posts with a similar message to the original, but in easier to understand language. Maybe someone else already added a reply that adds useful information onto the op.
And maybe all of that takes a long time. Maybe, by the time you finally understand what the post was talking about, itâs months old and no longer relevant. Maybe you donât even want to reblog it anymore. Who cares, fuck that post. You learned and grew as a person. Thatâs more important than looking good on a blog.
Unfortunately, a lot of people's idea of feminism does not hinge on women are autonomous beings who deserve equal rights and opportunities, but instead on women are beautiful and precious objects that should be treated well which is not actually the same thing. At all.

People still tend to lump JK Rowling in with the category of ~problematic artists~ and I need everyone to understand that is not the problem with her. She is not comparable to anyone who wrote a piece of fiction you hate, or someone who made rude comments in 2015 and has since learned better.
She is far more like Elon Musk. She is a radicalized person with an extreme amount of social and financial power, and for YEARS she has been using that power to try to influence her government into hurting vulnerable people, on purpose. And she has succeeded. THAT is the problem with her, and THAT is why spending money on her books is so dangerous, not because her books aged badly.
Critiquing her work is fine, of course (I personally was never a fan so I really donât care) but you NEED to understand that fiction is not the main issue here. And I truly think acting like sheâs the same as the rest of any giant list of ~problematic creators of the week~ waters down how dangerous she is.
Did you know I stopped fundraising for my family because something is more important than anything and better? We just named the school, about 700 students signed up.
