Collaged some neighborhood kids!
This illustration was in a special issue of the Yale Daily News printed for the incoming first-year class. Here is the quote/prompt from the article I was given: “What's missing from both pictures is the human aspect of friendship. This is what I think my friend got wrong when we first discussed fulfilling friendships. It's easy to pledge allegiance to dry intellectualism, but there's a reason no one's cracking open a cold one with Encyclopedia Britannica every weekend. Friendship must be reciprocal to be even remotely fulfilling, and so, as you make your way onto campus and throughout Yale, I hope you seek intellectualism, pursue lasting friendships, and remember not to confuse the two.”

My Mother’s Kitchen
For my mom, who ran to Wal-mart in the middle of the night and bought me another bottle of olive oil so that I could finish this painting.
I just found out that this piece, which received a Scholastic American Vision Award and was recently showcased at Carnegie Hall, has been selected as one of fifty national winners to go on tour around the US! The tour dates are as follows:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI Kendall College of Art & Design September 20-October 14, 2016
HOUSTON, TX Museum of Fine Arts, Houston November 1, 2016-January 2, 2017
BOZEMAN, MT Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture February 10-March 17, 2017
JACKSON, MS Mississippi Museum of Art April 1-May 14, 2017
Unfortunately, none of these places are near me T_T but if you are ever in the area, I invite you to go check out my painting along with some other "inspiring and innovative work by teens from all across the country." The Art.Write.Now.Tour will also feature "The Best Teen Writing of 2016", Scholastic's annual writing anthology of selected Gold Medal writing.
