Pricefield - Abstract
Commission for @charles12-13 Here the words that inspired the drawing: "What I’d want is to convey Max and Chloe’s intense and unconditional love for one another, their undying and unmatched passion for each other. The world around them doesn’t really matter, only they do, as if the world stopped running. They touch each other a lot, because they need to feel that the other is there as much as possible; they just want one another but they just can’t get enough. They want to display their love to the other as much as possible, as in that moment they will be opened and vulnerable to the other, but they know that the other will do the same: they’ll always be there for the other and won’t ever betray the other; they can have absolute trust in one another and for good reasons. They’re essentially soulmates, made for one another; they might each have their individual flaws, but they cancel out when they’re together: together they’re perfect. The world tried to crush them, but they refused: they can no longer be separated; they are pure love."

Someone today will read Shakespeare's hamlet and say omg he's just like me fr. Another person will read moby dick and proclaim Ishmael as an adhd king.
A person grieving for their recently deceased lover reads the iliad and they watch as Achilles rages and rages and god how righteous anger fueld by love is so devastating that it's ramifications still affect the world several thousand years later.
We might one day settle down and read the epic of gilgamesh and watch as a king has to accept the death of the person he loved the most. One of the very first stories ever written and it was about coping with death, and how to grieve.
We don't read classics because they're old, we read them because they remind us that we are never alone. That a character created over 500 years ago struggled with the exact same problems we all still have today. That even a king from centuries past had to deal with death just like me. That's what makes stories so powerful--they prove to us that we are never truly alone in what we are feeling.
“People are inherently terrible” no!!! Have you ever seen a child wait for their friend while they tie their shoelaces? Have you ever known someone who would bring hurt squirrels and rabbits and mice to the nearest vet just so it doesn’t suffer? Have you seen someone grieve? Have you ever read something that hit your heart like a freight train? Have you looked at the stars and felt an unexplainable joy? Have you ever baked bread? Have you shared a meal with a friend? Have you not seen it? All the love? All the good? I know it’s hard to see sometimes, I know there’s pain everywhere. But look, there’s a child helping another up after a hard fall. Look, there’s someone giving their umbrella to a stranger. Look, there’s someone admiring the spring flowers. Look, there’s good, there’s good, there’s good. Look!!!!
This is such an underrated Pricefield interaction, I think about it all the time.
Chloe just realized that her childhood best friend has the power to alter time and destiny, and her first move is to swear her allegiance. Chloe really is the most loyal girlfriend of all time.
I’m thinking about how the fall season came after Arcadia Bay was destroyed or Chloe died, and in either timeline, it came right after Max was taken to the dark room.
So on an angsty note: It’s very easy to imagine Max not being able to fully enjoy the fall experience. On a certain route, she’s watching orange leaves out a hotel window and knowing that she’ll never see her hometown that way again. In a different reality, she’s invited by Dana to a haunted house, and all she can think about is how much better it would be if Chloe was with her.
On a positive note: Imagine a healed Max starting to enjoy the fall again. A day comes when she’s happily taking pictures of the bright leaves while Chloe patiently waits in the truck. In another life, a day comes when she meets up with Kate to help bake apple doughnuts with a smile on her face.
Max loving fall is such an angsty factor when you consider the timeframe, but it feels so bittersweet to think about when you imagine her starting to heal.
Revising Max’s School Schedule
While I’m a big fan of Life is Strange, I fully admit that there are some significant flaws in the game. One of these issues lies with Max’s school schedule which, honestly, reads more like a college schedule than high school. First, they have Max start school at 10 in the morning which everyone who has gone through the American school system can tell you, we wish school started that late.
Seriously, a lot of high schoolers would be far better adjusted if school started a couple hours later and they could sleep in. Oh, and we never got an hour for lunch. My school gave us 22 minutes - in fact, lunches were staggered between three lunch periods and you had five minutes to get to the cafeteria and 22 minutes to stand in line, get your food, and then eat. If your previous class was all the way on the other side of the school, you were standing in line for 15 minutes and then wolfing down lousy food over a couple of minutes - a grand preparation for how businesses treat their employees in fact.
Similarly, her classes don’t make any sense. We’ll ignore for now that Blackwell was too cheap to spring for a substitute teacher (and given substitutes were paid $70 a day back when I was a substitute teacher a couple decades ago, that is still pretty stingy!) or even have the principal or vice principal watch over class, and instead look at how she apparently only had two hours of history a week, two hours of Algebra, and one hour of physical education. That’s actually against the law if I’m remembering correctly, though they may have changed requirements from waaaay back when I went to high school and poufy hair was what was in. (Ah, the 80s. What a horror show.)
So I decided it’s time for Max to have a realistic school schedule, based on what is required by laws and honestly even private schools that cost a lot of money would be having kids remain in class for a lot longer. So… that late start to the day? It’s out. School starts at 8 and runs until 4. And to be honest? That’s lenient as many places start at 7:30. Next? Lunches are 25 minutes long - which is a bit more than a number of schools offer, even if it’s less than half of Blackwell’s overly generous system. And third? Nine periods each running 45 minutes with five minutes between each class, and a 5 minute homeroom (the first class of the day).
Next, I changed Max’s workload. It honestly made little sense for Max to have three hours of English (before the teacher went AWOL, that is) and two hours of World History a week. Instead, each of the core classes (English, Social Studies, Math, and Science) would run all week. Physical Education is now twice a week along with a Health class. The end result (not including the initial five minute Homeroom scheduling from 8:00 to 8:05) looks like this:
This is a far more realistic schedule (and anyone crafting fanfiction for Life is Strange is more than welcome to use this new schedule), and it’s easy to craft other character schedules to integrate with this one - for instance, Warren would be sharing the Chemistry class and lab with Max, and perhaps The Art of Science. Kate would also take Music Lab with Max and possibly Life Drawing. And on down the line.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this small exercise in inserting a little sanity into the Blackhell academic situation. ;)
What kind of school IS Blackwell Academy, anyway? It seems to be both a high school and a college as well. This may be simply due to the game being created by French devs. But in my head I see the school as a prep school. Furthermore, since I don’t know much about prep-schools, to me this means they have grades 9 through 12, plus they have college-level classes for transferring to a 4-year university. I do like your thoughts here, OP. Thanks.
Well, that’s the thing. The writers for LiS don’t seem to know. They didn’t do any real homework on this and pulled it out of their asses.
What we do know is this: despite what Max said in her journal, Blackwell is more than just a school for Seniors. We know this because Chloe was kicked out of school in 11th grade. And she attended Blackwell for 11th grade. So that means Blackwell is in fact a high school, not just a Senior Prep school.
(They also have a swim team and a football team and seem to be pretty good… part of that likely is through the use of Sports Scholarships to ensure skilled athletes help ensure Blackwell earns plenty of medals and the like. And that is most likely to satisfy the whims of rich donors who want their schools to “excel” and obviously it’s more important to beat other schools athletically rather than, say, through educational prowess.)
That said, it is entirely possible for Max’s comments to be the truth about Blackwell and yet for it to be a “normal” high school as well, if its Arts program (and classes with Jefferson) are Seniors Only. Teens from Arcadia Bay attend for normal classes and then go home afterward. It is only Dorm Students paying tuition who stay on campus. (This also suggests that Rachel Amber might very well have lived in a neighboring town, which is why she has a dorm room when she attended in 2011-2012.)
Max’s school schedule doesn’t matter for that. Blackwell is not a college (and if it had been a college, it would have made so much more sense, honestly, though I still attended over two hours a week for each class when I was in college). By law, Max needs more than two hours of History, Algebra, Science, and the like a week. Now, maybe they make up that time by having no school vacations or the like. But honestly? The way it’s currently set up, Blackwell should not be an accredited educational institution.
One other thing to note is the American School System exists as a tax-paid babysitting service which just so happens to educate our youth as well. Kids are going into school at 8 and returning home by 4 (for Grades 1-8 at least) so that parents can work and not need to pay a babysitter lots of money. So having a school starting classes at 10 and ending at 4… that leaves teenagers a bit of time for mischief.
So when I was writing those fanfics (and part of me wants to return to them, it’s just… difficult) I decided that it made more sense to give Max a proper schedule. Honestly, I should have just made Blackwell an Art College instead (and I did that with “A Strange Life”), as that makes life so much easier.
And hey, if they ever come out with Life is Strange: Storm Warnings (a remake of the original LiS) or Remake or whatever they call it? Maybe they’ll just toss in the towel and remake Blackwell into the college it should have been. (And give Max a roommate. Those dorm rooms are far too big and the dorms have far too few students in them for Blackwell to be feasible.)
It's funny to think that Max (and us players by extension) got to live and witness this day and remember it as if it were just an event yesterday yet in the original timeline, it never happened. There was never an End of the World Party and everything that happened before that after Max saved Chloe is completely erased by a new reality.
So, yeah I wouldn't let such important day pass without saying anything.
And so, my peeps let's collectively say cheers for the day that never was.

At least I didn't do "blood" from the Knightober prompt list, so she's only sad and not bleeding.

Took some detours to get here, but at last! A Beautiful Dream! The ending of She-ra and the Princesses of Power was absolutely magical and I was so happy to see everyone grow into heroes and I hope that everyone growing up with it has/will get as much or more out of it than me!!
Remember Me...
I wrote a short She-Ra story. If you ship Catradora and don’t mind some angst (and blowing things up), feel free to check it out ;)
