ATREUS, THYESTES, & AEGISTHUS

In Greek mythology, Atreus and his twin brother Thyestes were descendants of the cursed line of Tantalus. The two fought for the throne of Mycenae, and ultimately Atreus killed Thyestes’ sons and tricked Thyestes into eating them at a banquet. Thyestes asked an oracle what to do, who advised him to have a son, Aegisthus, by his daughter, Pelopia, who would then kill Atreus. Once grown, Aegisthus killed Atreus, although not before Atreus had had two sons, Agamemnon and Menelaus. Agamemnon married Clytemnestra who was murdered by her. Following Agamemnon’s death, Aegisthus reigned over Mycenae for seven years. He and Clytemnestra had three children. In the eighth year of his reign Orestes, the son of Agamemnon, returned to Mycenae and avenged the death of his father by killing Aegisthus and Clytemnestra.
