Today's life lesson: Work smart, not hard. Save your energy for the apocalypse.
This looks like fun even when it goes wrong :-) “when someone asked if a cartwheel apex jump was a) possible and b) legal, we set Brad to the task…”
Lol, well nice try, but it helps if you can do a cartwheel in the first place. Second, you would have to do it right-handed so you don't kick players...but doing it right handed means you might kick your jam ref, knocking him out , and not get any points, because he's unfuckinconscious. Keep your damn feet below your waist...and save your parcour for outdoor skate parks.
Scald Eagle hits Ophelia Melons
Yesterday's drill at practice only went like this in my head. In real life I almost made out with my partner in some awkward exchange of shoulder hits, and witnessed other partners inadvertently motorboating one another.
Not worthy!
The glorious zebra butt will tell you the secrets of winning ze derbies! And I dare anyone to do this next bout to your local zebra, just for shits and giggles >___<
I’ve done it. Highly recommend. Would go cheek to cheek again.
I, uh…

The illusive hockey stop
http://www.kamikazekitten.co.uk/wordpress/?p=507
Oh ok, just like that.
It might not exactly be doctor’s orders, but it made perfect sense to Josh Sweeney.
"If you hit somebody, you feel a lot better," he says, making his way off the ice from a grueling practice with the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team – a sport also known as "murder-ball on ice."
Sled hockey might be the fastest sport in the Paralympics; players strap on to a tiny sled perched a few inches off the ice, balanced on one double-runner skate. They use two short sticks like ski poles to fly across the ice. Then the sticks flip around, with a hockey blade on the tip. Players can switch the puck quickly between left and right, and shoot from either side.
The Paralympic movement started with disabled veterans after World War II. Today, there are many veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan in Sochi with the U.S. team; Sweeney is one of them.

OMG, when my knees are finally totally shot from roller derby...
Scratched at scrimmage by unknown derby object, be it wrist guard or fingernail, this shit is inf*ckted...thank you very much! Thanks Sig for reminding me that some people don't always wash their hands after they poop.
So I think I am getting a little closer to choosing that goal for this month. I have a working idea based around my persistent tiredness and poor personal care. I tend to be one of those people who over-commits and puts themselves last, so I plan to implement some small things everyday that will help me to start consciously putting me first.
I think the first step is to improve my water consumption. I really am terrible at this...and I should know better by now. Ace Fitness recommends that athletes consume 17-20 oz 3 hours before working out, I maybe do 5 oz. immediately before! I do hydrate during my exercise, but never enough following; they recommend at least 8 oz within 30 mins after a workout, or at least 16 oz per pound of body weight lost. Specifically I intend to start with the most easy to implement and appropriate for my lifestyle; by drinking 8 oz every morning before I even brush my teeth at 6am, and another 8 oz before I begin eating my lunch at noon, and another 8 oz following every workout. My second step will be to start adding water to the quieter parts of the day, by drinking an additional 16 oz after I finish my morning coffee, no later than 10am, and another 16 oz between 2 and 3pm, leading up to my workout...a couple of swigs in the car on the way to the gym/rink won't help on it's own. Lastly, I plan to continue to research other, non-caffeinated ways to improve my energy.
Goal Setting
I have been playing roller derby now for 3.75 years...that's not a significantly long portion of my 32 years on the planet, but I guess it's long in the derby world, which only regained its recent popularity in 2006. Since I started I had some pretty straight forward goals all of the time...from the basics of form and stamina, to beating the next worthy competitor. Some goals took longer to achieve than others, for a variety of factors, but I always seemed to have no trouble pushing on. In the fall last year, following our league's second competitive season with under USARS, I feel like I lost focus. Some of this can be attributed to my personal life, and other factors were the league itself. Our league suffered some injuries at regionals, loss of membership, and a pretty huge lull in participation. We have gone back to a strictly intra-league style of play and recruited a lot of new faces, young (14+) and beyond...so competition has a whole new look. I have tried to make sure I am able to help new skaters, answer their questions, and just be encouraging...but honestly, that is only rewarding for so long! I have a helpful side, but indulging in only that does nothing to satisfy my competitive side. In the last week I kept finding myself trying not to let anyone surpass me at speed work...and that's not presenting much of a reward either. It actually kind of makes me feel bad, as if I am hoping for others not to succeed...so I need to really set a bigger goal...but I seem to be stuck.
I recently signed up through my gym, Geek & Gamer Fitness, to take a monthly competition relating to a personal goal for accomplishment. In the past I sort of scoffed at their monthly competitions because they called for completion of X number of squats, X number of miles run, nothing that really fit my personal goals or athletic enjoyment. So now that I have the chance to take my own lead, I am stuck, I must come up with a new goal, it has to be my own, and I am stumped!
So I am throwing this out to the derby verse...please any suggestions?
Whoa, Blackmilk is doing a Game Of Thrones collection?!
Be my derby legs! Hillary, dragon scales ftw. Also, I am a little glad they did not do wolf fur legs...because there is a lot of maintenance that goes into hair free legs in derby...why add it back?
This is exactly me and my son, when I was helping him move into his apartment.
I feel this needs to be on my derby blog...because USARS!!!
To my Derbs!
My 21 Day Sugar Detox
I recently decided to join a friend in a 21 day sugar detox diet following the Holidays. I was acutely aware that I had indulged in sugar cookies, candy, and more than my fair share of soda at all of those blockbuster movies. Today I am on day 19, finishing up over the weekend. I am not going to lie, the process was insanely difficult. The early days were accompanied by stomach discomfort and loose bowels. I then over compensated for that problem by consuming more than a good amount of cheese for a few days. Each meal I ate in the first week left me unsatisfied; I knew I was full, but I still found myself wanting more…surely this was the sugar craving. I simply wanted sugar, but mind over matter won, except I just kept eating all the allowed foods I could find. Unfortunately this did not do too much for my energy. I found myself passing out on the couch some nights at only 8:30pm, dreaming wildly, and not really feeling rested by 6:00am. In my second week I finally decided that I needed to make accommodations for an active lifestyle and allow myself some approved starches. I bought myself a bag of Trader Joe’s sweet potato ridged chips, and kept those at my desk for emergency afternoon pick me ups before the gym or roller derby. I at least needed to be able to make it home and get dinner fixed before passing out. Towards the end of my second week my mood throughout the day had shifted; I finally felt that my meals were appetizing and satisfying. I did begin to feel that I was always in the kitchen, and that was becoming an irritant. I confronted my husband on the matter and he was less than supportive, actually pretty hostile about my requests for help…although he did like the new diet, he didn’t want to be responsible for cooking my food…that he was happy to eat once it was prepared. I finally just had to let it go. He wasn’t going to see he was being difficult, and I only had the one week left. As I reflect on week three, I know I have gotten smarter about preparing meals in advance, and what flavors satisfy me. I have become a better cook; I no longer boil everything I consume, and I actually like brussel sprouts.
So here’s hoping my husband will cook tonight. I am babysitting 2 boys all afternoon tomorrow and that might be a challenge. Sunday morning I have a roller derby practice, but the home stretch should be a breeze. I do plan on eating a dessert I have been saving for three weeks…a small piece of cheese cake I froze from New Years…right at midnight! I probably won’t ever go back to eating bagels with cream cheese or sugary yogurt for breakfasts anymore. I have come up with a great blended smoothie made from frozen bananas, cocoa, almond butter and almond milk. For dinners I will eliminate the old go-tos of rice, potatoes, and bread, saving those for only pre-workout meals. Remaining smart about the time of day I consume my sugars, starches, and fruit will be key. I have already lost 6 lbs, and with any luck I could easily lose another 5…and as my derby teammates say, “please don’t lose that butt.”
