Starter Kit

So, like, one of the best things in Bluesky is the starter kits. We all know that the experience of a social media site is all about who you follow. A lot of us have been doing this thing long enough, we know how to find our people wherever we go. Like, when I moved to bsky, it was because a lot of my Twitter follows were going there, and it was easy enough to follow them, and as they brought others over and re-posted them, I followed those people, yadda. Same for when I got started on Tumblr. I knew enough people who were already here, all I had to do was follow them and the rest happened naturally. But there may be some Meta refugees arriving on the Tumblr shores who don't know anyone but one person. (Okay, me. I'm talking about my own personal friends who are looking for a place without censorship or algorithms.) One person does not a community make, and without more people to follow, Tumblr probably won't be very much fun. So I'm going to start reccing other Tumblrs -- in particular, from this account, mostly non-fannish Tumblrs. Politics. Art. Cute baby animals.

Researcher needs help

Hi Tumblr!

I'm doing my master thesis in art history on the creation of a new museum focused on briton music, a folk art from an oral based dying culture, and I am looking for other examples / attempts at valorisation of folk music, ideally from other threatened cultures. Anything celtic would be awesome, since there would be a common ancestry, but I'm interested in any other music you might think of, like indigenous music, slavic, asian, black... Basically, if you can think of a place / time in which people tried to figure out how to make their musical cultural heritage available to a wider public, I want to hear about it!!!

The Western US has guard rails everywhere they could possibly be needed, but in Appalachia, guard rails are for sissies

I think a lot of us would like to have guard rails. It’s not a matter of pride but a matter of infamously shitty and neglected civil infrastructure in Appalachia as a product of local corruption and perpetual state underfunding.

In 1977, the mayor of Vulcan West Virginia wrote to the Soviet Union and East Germany requesting foreign aid to replace the only bridge leading into town, an old swinging footbridge that had collapsed. This was the final straw that forced the West Virginia Legislature to cough up $1.3 million dollars to replace the bridge. Not the fact residents had been fording the river or using unsecured crossings to get to their homes for two years, the bad press generated by a Soviet journalist visiting the area to assess the situation.

It’s been almost 50 years since that and to be honest not much has changed. A lot of the bridges that would have been considered unsound at that time are still up and being driven over everyday.

Driving on poorly maintained roads over flat land is scary enough but driving on a poorly maintained, cracked, potholed, far too narrow road up the side of a mountain with a sheer drop and no guard rail is enough to give anyone a panic attack. Driving over 125+ year old, narrow, rusty one lane bridges that span rushing rocky rivers is something you SHOULD be scared of in Appalachia.

I once was looking at going to a meditation workshop in western North Carolina. The driving directions from Asheville to the facility in the mountains legit had a step that said, "Breathe. Go slow and you'll be fine." Reader, I did not go.
