So, yesterday I was listening to the livestream of @vornietom and @isab@utta talk about their forthcoming film, "The Greatest Treasure In the World.@" At one point, the discussion turned toward Hemet, California, and I made a wisecrack in the chat about a very uncomfortable poetry reading Lea and I did there many years ago. Obviously, it wouldn't have been appropriate to elaborate at the time, so I thought I'd make a video and tell the story of how we traumatized a very small crowd with poetry in Hemet. I am now wondering if I should make more videos talking about the worst gigs I've ever had. Saturday, I was on a panel at the National Baseball Poetry Festival, moderated by the wonderful Karen Elizabeth Sharpe. Now, I have, to my recollection, never written anything that could be construed as a "baseball poem," so instead, I opted to read a poem by the late poet Jack McCarthy, "The Walk of Life." Alas, I grabbed the wrong book on my way out the door to The White Room, where the panel was held, and ... as the text of the poem appears to not be online ... I had to make do with an excerpt, which happened to be in an essay I wrote some years ago. I made do with what I had, but I promised to put the poem online in some form. So here's a video of me reading Jack's poem, and talking a little about it.
