A response to @koretzky’s “I don’t know Sarah Nyberg”
We do know Sarah Nyberg. From the very beginning, Sarah has been a liar and a provocateur. You see, she goes in to the #Gamergate hashtag and scouts for any tweet she can use. 95% of the time, she snaps tweets that are grossly out of context and then uses a screenshot of them as a “GOTCHA” moment to her legion of followers. She’s also more than willing to fish for responses herself. She’s staunchly Anti-#Gamergate and severely unwilling to debate. Lord knows a lot of #Gamergate supporters have tried to do just that. Hell, I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt until recently. Why? Because she’s more than willing to say B when she’s saying A all before that. She changes her story to make sure she’s always in the right and “on the right side of history”. Most damningly, she’s helped a man named Dan Olsen to spread Child Pornography. (Dan @/FoldableHuman) Olsen wanted to prove that CP was accepted and hosted on 8chan. With that in mind, he either downloaded or created CP and then uploaded it to 8chan. After that he created a Medium article, which Sarah gleefully helped to spread.)
A_Man_In_Black is much the same way. More than willing to lie, change his story, troll people and harass them. Any debate has been proven to be pointless and about as effective as the Mercedes v Kluwe debate. They have a narrative to maintain, mired with lies and mangled half-truths. They’re also using their definitions of certain words. Harassment, for example, is to them “disagreement” or Dot Replying. Time and time again we’ve seen any attempt at talk be squashed. Whether because they refuse to believe facts (by means of actual evidence) or censorship in comment sections, forums or Reddit.
What happened to Jay and Sarah can’t be excused. Doxing is far from okay. People like Sarah, or me for that matter, have a right to chose to what they want to be public. And, if information like with Sarah is found, then that needs to be taken to the police. As you said. However, it’s easy to understand why it happened. These people are bullies, and victims of bullying can only be pushed so far before there’s a response. As a victim of bullying myself, I should know.
But then, how about what others did to them? Well, we’re not in a utopia yet. When people act like Sarah and Jay do, it’s only natural that people are going to be dicks. They’re not going to bother to show any respect to these people. Hence we get jokes, “Deadnaming” and more. And where’s the conflict, you’ll find the trolls.
TL:DR - My point is that the extremely vast majority of #Gamergate supporters have a clear conscience. Many of us feel sorry for what happened, but that doesn’t mean we owe anyone an apology. The only people who are eligible to apologize are the people who went after Sarah & Jay (and others) We’ve been trying to talk to anti-#Gamergate since the very start, but are constantly met with censorship, mockery and abuse. I’m still waiting on an apology for being called a White, Male, Cis, Misogynist, KKK Nazi whose worse than ISIS, by the way.
