and she wouldn’t travel to say goodbye to:

valdis, oswald, and broder who lost a brother fighting to rescue sigurd from fulke

ljufvina, who has always been a firm friend and sacrificed so much fighting under eivor’s banner

stowe and erke, a perpetual reminder to her that what is good and what is right don’t always align

vili, the man who knows her heart as she knows his, her longest and often-closest friend

ceolbert, a man who left this world too soon but left such a mark on eivor that she would visit his grave and mourn him long after he was gone

are you really telling me that ubi. with a straight face. in this economy.

She didn’t even say goodbye to Gunnar, who she was close with since she was a child, a father figure, or Randvi, canonically her romantic partner and non-canonically her closest friend and partner who is her right hand. So it’s wishful thinking they ever thought any deeper about her allies. Sadly.

They chose the people they did strictly because they are historically prominent figures — Guthrum and Alfred had their treaty where Guthrum converted and renamed himself. Christianity was then forced upon many of the Norse as part of their assimilation after Dane law fell apart, and Harald becoming the king of all Norway was a catalyst for lots of things — they also needed to sneak in Iceland, because historically the Norse first discovered it during Eivor’s lifetime. I still think it was insanely stupid to focus on historical figures and moments and not the people any of us actually cared about! Don’t get me wrong. It’s appallingly shallow writing. They went out of their way to make this about marketing for Mirage and reduce Eivor to a blip on the historical map of the Viking era, to later die and be forgotten in Vinland with her letterbox. That’s the sad truth of the last chapter. They put zero thought into her Allies she loved so dearly being a part of her conclusion. She goes to London and doesn’t even mention Stowe and Erke. It’s wild.
