finished s5 of supernatural and think I'm gonna leave it there. which is leaving it in a place where everyone is dead (normal for this show) except some of them came back to life last minute inexplicably (still normal for this show) and with dean winchester wanting to kill himself soooo bad for realsies (even more normal for this show)

however you feel about the movie, ultimately, robert pattinson skulking around in black leather and being a mythic asshole was incredibly silly but also very fun to watch. only second to the way odysseus became john wick in the final twenty minutes of the film.

even going into the odyssey knowing + accepting that's it a hollywood blockbuster made for mass appeal and little else...it was STILL shocking just how abysmal the script was. literally some of the worst dialogue i've ever heard out loud + the writing overall just sucked.

more on the writing. among many of the bad writing decisions, the worst crime of all was turning odysseus into a passive agent in his own epic narrative. they refused to commit to giving him any interiority whatsoever (a result of the writing but also the ACTING) and made him into literally generic white soldier number 15 who is sad about war. there was also little to no curiosity about reinterpretation of his character (thus stripping him of any characteristics at all) and bc a lot of his active decisions are morally questionable to a modern audience (i disagree with this but i can see the hollywood justification) they just decided to have him make NO decisions at all and just be a guy with no emotions that things keep happening to.

even the central question they clumsily shoe-horn in (an hour and a half into the film) of 'why don't you want to go home?' the movie is deeply uninterested in answering (a symptom of bad writing). after 7 years on calypso's island we never ever see WHAT changes his mind or why he suddenly decides to go home (especially since the sudden question of why he doesn't want to has JUST been posed) in that moment. one of many such cases.

but barring all of that, it's still a movie where one of the central characters utters out loud on screen 'the age of bronze is collapsing.' SCREAM.

even so, it was extremely refreshing to see a movie with full live-scale sets on location and even despite the writing there were many moments that made me go REAL CINEMA!! the trojan horse interpretation was amazing, blind tiresias scene jaw-dropping (ignoring the dialogue), cyclops scene i have never ever scene a scary giant/cyclops until this movie i was literally covering my eyes, the circe transformation of men into pigs scene was HORRIFIC and spine-chilling like that's a real WITCH!! (let's not talk about her characterisation though). there was vision here there were fun ideas clearly the mythologised speculative aspects is what nolan cares about the most because that was some of the coolest shit i've ever seen! too bad it was trapped in a movie where zendaya plays athena (or really zendaya trying not to play herself and failing)

anyway I’m seeing the odyssey tonight. I’m trying not to be a hater but going in with low expectations means if I do enjoy it it’ll be a fun surprise

I mean the season has gotten incredible reviews from major critics and has the highest audience rating so far of all three seasons, with Sam especially getting a huge amount of praise for his acting, so it seems like they did something right, at least in most people's eyes.

I don’t want to get too in the weeds with this but

1) I don’t put stock in what critics or ratings say (never have + never will + all my favourite things are usually off kilter from mainstream + never get traditional if any critical acclaim anyway)

2) the acting is amazing as always and is saving the show but the editing + writing is substandard held up against the first two seasons

Totally agree. The rest of the cast were just as amazing, but the total standout for me was Zindzi Okenyo as the mother. It was a really layered and thoughtful and funny production all around

also watched ep 5. as soon as you put jacob anderson and sam reid in a scene together their chemistry really outshines anyone else’s. which is a shame because the gabrielle actress is great on her own but she and sam reid share no chemistry whatsoever (also bc they didn’t build up their relationship at all) and 90% of this season is lestat + his mother and all of this means that. it’s just. so so boring. and you don’t even realise that chemistry is what’s missing until lestat & louis are on screen together !!!

I saw sam reid in a play the other night and it was some of the best live theatre I’ve seen in years. which only confirmed that tvl was really just a huge wasted opportunity for people of his (& the rest of the iwtv cast) acting calibre
