This of course begs the question: what do you do with "more traditional like methods"?

It varies a lot but most of the time it starts with a solid sketch and blocking in shadows.

For the most part I use a pretty simple format for rendering my artwork unless I’m playing with more traditional like methods.

First, it’s a VERY good idea to establish lighting as early as the sketch.

I will use a color for my shadow (a layer set to multiply) that is saturated but not too dark. A red-purple is my usual go to when I am being lazy.

I create highlights by setting a layer to overlay (sometimes soft light, hard light, etc depending on the goal) and use a lighter color.

I’ll also put a small amount of my shadow color in the overlay layer to help the shadows pop a bit more.

The more complex your shadows means that the lights should be simple and vice versa. But this is just a rule I set for myself so I don’t over render.
