thoughts on the odyssey film

i watched the film earlier this week at the hereford odeon (its in the uk). i quite enjoyed it, the cinematography was stunning and the music was great. i have a few key notes about it which i think are fun to share.

first, i really like how we dont see agamemnon's face. i think it was such a great idea to tie him to a concept (his dark helmet and spine adornments on it) rather than focus on a face. this is because makes his whole idea of bloodthirsty-ness more believable. it just a gives an otherworldly vibe from him which highlights the difference between him and odysseus (i could on a whole other essay about this) who is showing remorse for his actions.

another thing i really liked was how the gods were just a concept as well, it made them seem much more powerful as we could only tie them to what they could do and not a face of an actor. again, made them much more otherworldly. and this is why i dont think athena was needed as a physical character, in the story she is said to have argued with zeus and helped telemachus in his trip to sparta which didnt happen in the movie. in the film she didnt have a role which affected the actions of anyone, so it kinda made her redundant. though i did like how odysseus' perception of athena was one of the priestesses from troy, it was a very cool idea.

now onto odysseus, the opening kinda frames it as if its odysseus' fault for going the long way to Ithaca. however in the original story (which i have read) they only have to stop because of the lack of supplies. and then the movie continues to make it odysseus' fault when they stop at the lastrygonians and etc.

(slight mention of SA in next paragraph if you want to skip)

i also didnt like the whole exile thing about how killing the suitors would mean he would be exiled. thats not true, also it contradicts when telemachus says he should become king so that he can kill the suitors and get them to leave without any trouble. why would odysseus, the king of ithaca, get exiled for getting people who have used "xenia" for three years out of his home. the suitors abused xenia and also threatened to kill telemachus and SA penelope, so its totally valid that he kills them.

quick final comments:

i really liked the strum when he strings the bow it was actually so cool to show how incredible the bow is.

also did anyone else find the changing into pigs scene really disgusting??? idk i literally had to look away while it was happening...

ANYWAY enough with my rants, overall i really enjoyed the film and i will watch it again, it was very cool to see a story i love so much turned into a film which everyone was very excited for. other than the things i mentioned here i was only sad they missed aeolus since the wind god is a cool character (though it does contradict my point of saying i liked not seeing the gods).
