“You understand,” Rayleigh says, idly swishing his beer, “that it will be hard to raise children on a pirate ship, yeah?” Said children have fallen asleep in one of the hammocks on deck with none other than Pine. The contrast is humorous and sweet: their fierce torturer, turned into a mushy and teary-eyed mess just from having two little bodies resting trustingly on his chest. Shanks’ little fingers are wrapped like a vise around Pine’s beard, while Pine’s big hand is wrapped around Shamrock with the babe snuggling the man’s thumb. Pine is gently rocking them with the one leg he’s got out of the hammock, determinedly looking at the sky so as not to let the tears fall. Next to Rayleigh, Roger grins boyishly at the sight. “We’ll just hafta protect ‘em like what they are.” Rayleigh smiles up at the sky, looking at the stars. Well. The kids did come in a treasure chest.
