The cold in England is nothing like Monaco. Not just the marking on the temperature dial – the shrunken vial of mercury is always smaller at Grove – but the feel of it. The cold here seeps into the spaces between bones and crawls under layers of skin, a chill that seems to make a home in the tips of fingers and the edges of ears. The chilling numbness that falls over all limbs once the sun retires for the day on its short winter stints.  The cold in England is nothing like Monaco, and Charles sits with the expanse of the night sky in front of him. He's not sure how long it’s been.
