Another man has fallen 🥀
Update:
One 'House of the Dragon' star says fans will have more reasons to hate this already divisive character in Season 3.
In an interview with BlackGirlNerds for House of the Dragon Season 3, Frankel admitted that he really wanted fans to (again) root for Criston. "Dude. I know, so was I. It was a bit of a turn that I didn’t expect, but you know the writers want to keep me unlikable, man," he said. "They want to keep my career derailed." Co-star Olivia Cooke revealed that Criston did have "different sides" in Season 2, but Frankel explained why fans never saw those scenes. "They got cut. Anytime we try to bring a little bit of humanity to the thing, Ryan [Condal] and Sara [Hess] just want me f***ing really down and dumped," he quipped. [...] "I don't know. I mean, does he have a code? His code’s always changing. It's like one second his code is that he supports Rhaenyra, and his code is honor, and then that code is gone. Then he takes the white cloak and sleeps with the Queen and Rhaenyra, and then that code is gone. Then he's on Alicent's team, but then he betrays her in the small council. I mean, what’s his code?"
ryan condal is such a mean-spirited if not straight-up malicious showrunner. miguel sapochnik's departure in season 2 revealed plainly that it's condal who most greatly lacks any sort of instincts for organic storytelling and collaboration. as if that wasn't bad enough, the press between season 2 and 3 reveals how his contempt for the characters worsens the storytelling. he doesn't just rob them of nuance but actively adds tasteless, cheap, humiliating moments to make the actors miserable and ruin the characters. it's no wonder other showrunners keep leaving the show and actors keep giving shady interviews like this
again the fact that criston cole will die in s3 and everyone hates him bcs the dumb fucking writers reduced all his traits to just being Some Dude™️ pisses me off so much. Considering how they could have developed him especially: making him dornish could have been so interesting. A brown, lowborn man in a time of high racism. But no. Somehow, he has privilege over poor rhaenyra, the white princess. and the alicole plotline could have been amazing but again it was cut short in favour of some stupid reunion between alicent and rhaenyra which reverses all of alicents development. also the writers glossed over the fact that rhaenyra basically assaulted him.
I'm still not over changing his backstory to make him dornish (when dorne's sexism is more akin to our modern sexism than the rest of westeros' turned up to 47 version) and then making him extra sexist
misogynists put me through "rey/arya/[insert mcu female character here] is an unrealistic mary sue who didn't earn any of the skills the narrative purports her to have" for a decade just to be gagged by rhaenyra doing absolutely nothing
yeah actually we removed the big bad wolf from the little red riding hood story because portraying violence against minors is really messed up. yeah. yeah also the wolf narrative was really predatory and had had some icky grooming vibes and a fable meant for literal children shouldn’t have implied p*do shit and grape so now little red riding hood goes into the woods and nothing happens and she goes to grandma’s house. don’t worry our kids will still stick to the path and know not to follow to wolves implicitly because we told them to and children should always do as their told. just like little red riding hood does now.
Hotd writers workbook each season:
-Sexually humiliate team green for shock value by inventing non-f&b scenes.
-Turn a civil war into a psychosexual lesbian story between one bad (victim) woman who needs to be constantly punished and one good (victim) woman who is constantly restrained by her gender.
-Glaze girlbossified victim rhaenyra, her feminist sex-trafficker advisor and to an extent her pdf daddy husband (ironically even GRRM was not up their bottoms as much as ryan condal and his writers are).
-Humble alicent through SA by framing her as constant victim of her own side to 1) justify her supporting rhaenyra over her kids 2) for #them to go > she deserves it for daring to support her son against queen rhaenyra, the greens are SO horrible, this is what inventing patriarchy does!
-For the gazillionth time, show how immoral criston cole is.
-Repeatedly depict all of tg as deviant evil misogynists and all tb as goody two shoes feminists by adding more non-book scenes, nuance be damned.
-Milk daenerys and asoiaf prophecy as reserved quota.
-Give most tg screentime to alicent who isnt even tg anymore but another rhaenyra stan.
-Add plagiarized dialogues to show how simultaneously girlbossy and victimised all hotd women are, particularly rhaenyra.
-Allude how every medieval woman against rhaenyra MUST be a pick-me hypocrite woman for trump and every woman for rhaenyra is the most perfect badass feminist ever lived, there is no inbetween.
-Only and only rhaenyra is allowed to love, cry, feel for her children in this show.
-Bare minimum characterization for the velaryons. Their portion of tb screentime is given to rhaenyra, daemon and mysaria.
-Make the greens weaker, more divided and pitiful for #their gratuitous gooning.
-Remove all f&b nuance that GRRM wrote and reiterated in his blog to turn the story of the entire dance into tb best, tg worst propaganda for fave self-inserts.
*Best Show Ever!*
the fictional immersion of the hotd fandom at large has completely broken down. every single week the fan debate and professional reviews aren't about the characters' choices or the world's stakes but rather praise for the acting and justifying or decrying certain writing choices. the blunt force of the writing doesn't allow for a suspension of disbelief that the chain of events presented in the show could be plausible.
i would also go so far as to say hotd is no longer an adaptation, nor is it viewed as such. even beyond grrm straight-up saying this isn't his story anymore, these debates of "should this scene have been in the show" and "what did this accomplish" (alicent getting sexually harassed, rhaenyra having her period on the iron throne, rhaenyra quoting elizabeth's speech, etc) aren't even about whether the events were in the book or if they accurately adapt what the book was trying to say anymore.
many of the remaining show defenders will justify the heinous writing by saying stuff like, "has any of the haters considered that the SHOW is trying to make a statement about [something completely opposite to themes grrm was exploring in the book]?" maybe we would've, but the show puts the game of thrones music and logo at the beginning of every single episode as a way to cling to respectability and notoriety. so forgive me for assuming that it'd attempt to engage with what grrm was saying (which, despite its flaws, is far more internally logical and compelling than the show) whatsoever. the hostility to the source material is rooted in intellectual laziness but disguises itself as superior reading comprehension

if you watched rhaenyra turn to daemon again and again like a helpless child, you'd understand why. arya and rey have their own unique strengths. they don't need to turn to the men in their lives for guidance. they killed the bad guys because it was necessary. rhaenyra killed otto because daemon pushed her too and she hated every moment of it.
rhaenyra just isn't threatening to any man
my point exactly. she's always cowering behind daemon, mimicking him, or being goaded into a decision by him. i have no concept of who rhaenyra would be independent of him
I know you had issues with HOTD, I think it’s just okay, it definitely could be better. I feel like the exclusion of Nettles, Rhaynera, and Alicent's characterization seemed to stem from a fear of taking any risks with the audience. It just seems like the studio put so much money in and now they don’t want to do anything that might get a negative reaction. What do you think? 🤔
oh the entirety of hotd is 100% a large over-correction project for the way that daenerys's story ended. the show is made to redeem the franchise for people who hated the mad dany arc and want to see an unambiguously good targaryen queen on the iron throne. it does not exist independently in the way that, say, the sw prequels can, nor is it in any way adapting the story martin wrote thematically & philosophically.
hotd is purely fanservice for aggrieved show!dany fans, constantly congratulating itself for being more "progressive" than grrm or the previous show. this despite the fact that it is far more intellectually hollow than fire and blood and functions with internal logic, pacing, and general storytelling caliber just about equal to seasons 6-8 of got. nonetheless hotd benefits from all the risks that both grrm and the previous show took while actually taking none of them itself.

my problem is not rhaenyra struggling with what she feels she must do, experiencing moral qualms, questioning herself, etc. all good stuff. again it is the recurrent, never exhaustible sense of surprise. always this reset to moral innocence that is continually being shattered, rhaenyra continually having this revelation. this is the absolutely most annoying posture for me in all multiple areas of life, this baseline where clearly we must all be sort of perennially shocked by the presence of violence. i am not shocked. i’m never shocked. i am not shocked by the idea that rhaenyra must murder to keep her throne - why on earth is rhaenyra? why is this the show’s assumed perspective?
Yo, heads up on the elizabeth holms post from 2014. Came out years ago that she was actually running a huge scam with the blood thing and is perhaps not so girlboss
You are an enemy to women
grrm is by no means perfect, but now that hotd season 3 is almost done airing, i hope people are embarrassed for acting like he was throwing some kind of adult temper tantrum when he said that the show was no longer his story. yall have been willingly eating up meaningless goofy slop and calling it gothic and shakespearean and "game of thrones at its best" because your blonde faves continue to kiss their relatives.
it is astounding how fans can identify racist and misogynistic tropes or completely crash out over flawed writing in other shows but enter mass delusion when it comes to hotd. the velaryons having interchangeable flat personalities, criston being abused and brutalized for comedic relief, alicent existing to be subject to every possible weird sexual situation and repeatedly blamed for the catastrophic war, carte blanche given to rhaenyra and daemon after slaughtering children.
at what point do the critics stop accepting money to heap praise on this moronic fanfic? at what point does the public lose interest in this show whose sole purpose is absolution of targaryen characters at all cost to theme, logic, plot, and characterization? what would it take for people to see how absolutely vile, incompetent, preposterous and cruel this writing is?
oh a24 really said we’re gonna make yall care about this boo hoo war propaganda movie by pushing out the bi boy and go queerbait with the other hot guys in the cast huh
Re-watching a bunch of interviews with the A24 Warfare cast. Utterly grotesque watching a bunch of Brits and Americans laughing and playing up their bromance, tee-heeing over getting cast tattoos, over a fucking film that is essentially a piece of propaganda meant to sanitise US military imperialism in Iraq and the war criminals who enforced violence against Iraqi civillians. Coming from someone who really liked Charles Melton and D'Pharaoh Woon A Tai, this cast can go fuck themselves.
Like when the LOTR cast did the tattoo thing, it was cute. But the Warfare cast doing the exact same thing as if making a Hollywood film based on an actual US soldier's experience during the Iraq war is the same as a classic fantasy story about a war between good and evil magical creatures. Are the Iraqis supposed to be the orcs in this scenario 🤡
Equally crazy was seeing the number of pickme bitches that defended this movie just becos their favourite white boy (namely Joseph Quinn, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Cosmo Jarvis) was in this.
People not understanding what the forms in which Hollywood propaganda can manifest as. It's not always, "War good, support war, Americans good, Brown people bad!!" Sometimes, it's "war is terrible and the American soldiers enforcing imperialist violence against the local civilians are victims as well!!" So, don't question their complicity in war crimes becos they've suffered as well :((
Hollywood propaganda films make you feel bad for the very people that instigated the violence to begin with.
I honestly shouldn't be shocked about this at this point. But some of yall Americans (eso white Americans) who really think of yourselves as leftist or progressive are shockingly bad at being critical of your military and identifying propaganda, and yall don't want to actually have your perspectives challenged.
I don't think A24's Warfare is pro-war propaganda, it is propaganda for the US military. There's a difference.
