"Disney laid off approximately 8% of Marvel’s workforce this week across nearly every department — film, TV, comics, franchise, legal, and finance. The visual development team — the artists responsible for character and concept design across thirty MCU films — was almost entirely eliminated, replaced by a skeleton crew overseeing outside contractors hired project by project (and using AI). We’ve seen this movie! When Jeffrey Katzenberg increased Disney animation staffing and drove a new feature every year instead of every two to four, the result was the Disney Renaissance: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King. Then Katzenberg was pushed out, Toy Story arrived, and Disney decided CGI meant it could cost-cut its artists. The Burbank hand-drawn studio closed in 2002, and what followed was Chicken Little and Treasure Planet. Disney then spent $7.4 billion acquiring Pixar — essentially repurchasing the creative culture it had liquidated — and got Frozen and Moana in return. The value of a creative company is in its people and culture, not its intellectual property or infrastructure. Disney already paid $7.4 billion to learn that. The visual development team isn’t a line item — they are the source code. Disney is going to spend the next decade wondering why nothing looks distinctive anymore, why no one is streaming, and then they’ll acquire whatever studio figured out how to do it right."
