Jen Stark is an artist exploring the intricate layers of the natural world through patterns and color. Her work is inspired by infinity, top
Intricate hand cut paper sculptures by Jen Stark, showing the power of bold colours and repetition. A lot of her work being influenced by forms in natures surroundings. Playing the distorting images through perception.
COGC RISO PRINT GUIDE
A guide put together by Laura Bowie that she kindly shared with us. She speaks about everything you need to know about riso and this was vey helpful in understanding this new process and how far your work can go with it.
MASSIVE ink cartridges for the printer.
Prints paired on my studio wall.
Various digital compositions and their riso prints, looking at layers and colours coming through other colours giving a sense of depth to the prints.
RISOGRAPH WORKSHOP - Photographs from our workshop with the wonderful Laura Bowie, who we had the opportunity to work with 3 times over the course of a few Tuesdays, she's a star! I was excited for this workshop as I knew it would open further opportunity to experiment with abstract shapes, compositions and highly pigmented vibrant colours. I was fascinated from the get go when seeing the risograph printer.
I started by picking a variety of imagery from my monoprints and then expanded on the ideas from there once I had a few prints down. Watching a machine make the impossible, possible, it was incredible to see just how quickly you are able to multiply your prints.
Layering using the risograph printer. Colour over colour to create new colour. Colour interruptions. Exploring enclosed shapes and forms, disconnected.
Continuing to isolate myself from what I know, observing my surroundings as a stranger in a new place. How do I feel? Confused? Curious? Anxious? Worried? Use these feelings to reflect in my work. Finding repetition in my surroundings, viewing from a new perspective.
More monoprints experimenting with colour and composition from our workshop.
Layers of stencils and prints. Deconstructing and reconstructing images.
Printing ink left by stencil on acrylic panel.
Adding textural elements to one of the monoprints using string and duct tape - taking a new form and revealing new focuses as well as hiding parts of the image.
MONOPRINTING WORKSHOP - series of monoprints working with block printing inks to convey the idea of confusion, chaos and isolation in relation to the stranger brief. Looking at each mark as a different story, imagery is the language.
Ghost prints. Looking at abstract shapes, bold colours and composition. Focusing on circles as a metaphor for the life cycle and human connection. Interlinked and unlinked. Using experimentation with these factors to question everything I already know about making.
Nothing makes sense
What does this word mean? Let’s google it.
Google defines isolation as follows:
the process or fact of isolating or being isolated.
"isolation from family and friends may also contribute to anxiety"
denoting a hospital or ward for patients with contagious or infectious diseases.
an instance of isolating something, especially a compound or microorganism.
Do I now understand this word? Could I have been subconsciously thinking about covid whilst also trying to be a stranger to my surroundings?
Layers, layers, layers. Glitch in the matrix. Am I familiar with these objects and shapes? Continuing to explore all of my surroundings, just as a stranger would in a new world. This has really allowed me to think in depth about the marks that can be made from everyday objects turning my surrounds into something even more warped and distorted. Process of editing.
Does manipulating these forms further through the use of digital art make me any closer to finding out what these mean? What objects were burnished to the paper to ensure these marks? Exploring mark making through the use of impressions alone, overlapping, using other shapes….contrast between a soft bubble-like shape against a boxy stark harsh lined square. What is a circle? What is a square? Am I nearly there?
Digital manipulation. Experimenting with colour exposure and combining photos together to take on new forms one layer at a time. I feel that digital art would be a great example of trying to convey myself as a stranger in a new place, through my little experience, through distortion, text etc and I will use digital manipulation to produce a 2D visual piece for submission.
