I adore cats, but they are one of my least favorite animals to try and paint. There's just something odd about their skull structure that throws me off, so I kind of try to avoid painting them if I can. . . . This particular piece is forcing me to accept and address that challenge that is dealing with painting cats. So far...I'm pretty happy with how it's looking, though it has a VERY long way to go. I still plan on fixing some shadows, putting on hair, and maybe something with the background/foreground. . . I plan on finishing it tomorrow (mostly because I have to in order to give it to its new owner before I head home on Tuesday). . . . I'm watching a couple of friends play a game and decided to do a quick fun paint on...non-canvas. I don't know why, but there's something so fun about painting on skin, and knowing that there's no committment to whatever you create. I meant to paint today...but some prints I ordered came in, so I decided to start a different project! One I am extremely excited for. I decided to make a scrapbook to hold a print copy of all the paintings I've done. There are still a couple that I need to find, print, and add - but the best thing about scrapbooking is that you can add pages to it any time, so it'll work out just fine. . . . Scrapbooking isn't really my thing, but I do love having everything I've painted in one spot. There's something quite satisfying about seeing where I've come from and where I can go. . . . I look forward to adding to this scrapbook in the coming years. I made sure to include the name of each painting, and I may decide to add the Certificates of Authenticity to the back of each one, just so that I have dates and general info for each painting on hand. Or I may handwrite some descriptors. I haven't decided yet. . . . Since I can't seem to do anything apart from starting new paintings recently...here's the rough start to a new one with more of a sunrise feel. What does your paint palette look like? Is it pure chaos, or is it more organized chaos? . . . I always love to see what someone's palate looks like. The one I shared is just from my recent sunset painting (along with a few other colors from another painting I'm working on). I like to keep my palette fairly clean, which is why I remove most, if not all, of the paint residue in between paintings. It's fun to see the process we go through to get to where we need to be. . . That's kind of how studying for finals feels like. I have notes on 5 different subjects going on at once and I'm switching between subjects like a mad woman, trying to remember things from each subject well enough to get by. But just like paint palettes - sometimes the colors get a little mixed together. Which is both good and bad, I suppose. But hey - this is vet school. All the colors are supposed to mix together at some point. And then we'll have this turbulent whirlpool of grey with flashes of color here and there, all residing in our brains. It's kind of neat to think about. . . . Finals week is almost upon us! It's a wonder as to why I haven't been painting, right? Haha. . . School takes up so much of my life anymore, both in the classroom when I'm listening to instructors and outside of the classroom when I'm studying my rear end off just to stay afloat. And with all the mayhem that comes with vet school, I sometimes forget to take the time and remind myself of who I am when I'm not in school. . . Now, that can mean a variety of things to many people. Who are you? What makes you, you? Why do you do the things you do? Whether that's painting or being a doctor or an engineer or a lawyer or a stay at home mom, or whatever your profession is. We all do so many things, and wear so many metaphorical hats, that we forget where and who we were before we came upon that path to adulthood. . . I am a vet student - you all know this. I have chosen to go into a career to help both the animals and people of the world, and I have my reasons. We all do. But in that journey, as in all of our journeys, we forget who we are when that label is stripped away. . . For me, I am a reader, a painter, an artist. The things I love don't necessarily correlate with my chosen job profession, but I can't forget those things that make my heart sing while I'm stretching my brain to the max. . . That is why tonight, after several hours of straight studying, I am taking a bit to remind myself of my other love that is not veterinary medicine. Reading reminds me to open my mind and it calms me in a way that learning medicine can't. . . I guess my point is - take a minute from your busy days to stop and think, or read, or paint, or do whatever it is that makes you happy. We get so focused on where we're going in life, that we forget about the present. It's Throwback Thursday time! . . You all know I love art in so many different mediums, but since I'm feeling sentimental today - I thought I'd head back to 2016 when I made a bunch of cups for people that I loved back home. You guys may have remembered one of the images I shared a while back of a bunch of clay cups/bowls. Well, this is the sort of thing I turned them into! . . This particular cup/mug was made for my late grandfather. He absolutely loves the Kansas Jayhawks, a basketball team for Kansas University. Since goal at the time was to make a bunch of animal oriented pieces, I figures the jayhawk was perfect. And the school colors provided great contrast. Jayhawks are surprising difficult to create it of clay, if you're curious. . . . As always, thoughts and comments are welcome. Probably one of my FAVORITE pieces to date. . . I know I have said that I was excited about a piece of mine more times than I can count, but I think I am truly proud of this one. Part of that may have to deal with it being for an old friend of mine, but I think it has to do with the shear amount of work I put into making this piece exactly what I wanted it to be. . . I started this piece not really knowing where I was going to go with it. It was made for a friend of mine that recently got married, and though I asked him months ago what their favorite animals were. I never thought I’d get “panda” and “giraffe”. Now I had to decide how I was going to combine the two in a way that didn’t make the pairing seem awkward. I certainly took my sweet time deciding how to get to the picture I had in my head. . I had never done a panda or a giraffe, so that’s always a fun event. I love to test myself at doing new animals and working with new anatomy. There’s always going to be trial and error going on, but there’s also this satisfying feeling you get when you’ve finished and decided that you’ve done the best you can at the time. In the end, I think that the giraffe and panda pair together beautifully, just like my friend and his beautiful new wife. . . On the background – I love painting sunsets, and the deep colors of the African sunsets just drew me in. I also think the deep colors provide enough contrast to allow the Giraffe and Panda to really stand out, without being too distracting. That’s also why I decided not to do too much detail work; I wanted the focus to be on the subjects of the painting, and I think I achieved that. . . I think I can officially say that painting sunrises and sunsets is probably one of my favorite things to do. I love being able to fade a bunch of colors together and then somehow creating a beautiful palatte of color that may or may not resemble something. So...I got tired of the Jayhawk I was working on and was wanting to do something with a little more color and freedom. Don't get me wrong - I love what I'm doing with the Jayhawk, but there's something very confining about doing something that's already been done before, and my brain just wanted a break. . . . This one is going to be another gift, and I have huge plans for it. My intent was to get much further along tonight, but there's this weird thing where I have to let the paint dry before I can do detail work? It's funny how that works. Of course, I could just go ahead and paint over the wet canvas, but then I'm getting green in places I don't want it and there's just a world of mistakes that'll need to be fixed later...and why make more work for myself? Painting is always a good break, and it's even better when you get to.spend the morning talking with friends. . . . I've made some progress on the head and the tail - and have decided that the Jayhawk is now going to resemble more of a chicken. I liked the look of the rooster tail compared to what the actual mascot has. Plus, it adds some color! . . . I am LOVING the look on this beak. I'm having fun with the gradient transition, though I'm not finished with it just yet. There's a bit of a dilemma I'm having with whether or not to outline it like the actual Jayhawk, but I think I'm going to work on the head a bit more before I officially decide what route I'm going. . . I'm not entirely sure whether I want to keep the eye as is, or if I want to make the bottom that's on the beak disappear. I'm thinking the latter, but what do you think? . . .
