Dearest Forsaken :: Hogwarts :: Dirk, Daisy, and Lily
crxsswell:
The gentle smiles that each of the young women wore was enough to buoy Dirk’s heart, if only temporarily. He had spent the majority of the last week either recovering from or getting himself into drunken stupors, and had underestimated the comfort he felt immediately upon seeing a shred of happiness on either of his friends faces. Despite their assertions to the contrary, Dirk knew full well that neither of his two companions were fine - none of them were, after all. The question was something that had to be asked, just as the positive response was what had to be given. The charade of strength, played out so many times since the Battle, wasn’t something that would soon go away. He knew he had a part to play in this as well, trying to keep the thin smile from fading from his lips. He nodded in Daisy’s direction and shrugged as casually as he could muster. “Yeah, I’m good, thanks.” His head continued to bob up and down slowly, as though he were trying to convince both his friends and himself.
You’re not, his mind insisted on reminding him, the vestiges of days of overconsumption still making his stomach turn, without mentioning his mental state. It had been a week of rumination, trying to determine whether or not continuing to fight with the Order was a worthwhile cause. Many times, with the firewhiskey flowing through his veins, Dirk had sworn up and down that he was done. With Dumbledore and You-Know-Who both gone, what would be the point? Both sides would do well to slide back into their daily routines and forget they’d ever been opposed. It had been three years of war, after all, and everyone deserved some measure of peace. Still, every time he awoke, head pounding and stomach sending him running to the washroom, he felt a familiar sense of doubt creep back into his mind. It wasn’t over - it likely never would be. These two groups had spent the better part of their adult lives bent on destroying the other side, a crusade of sorts for their own moral inclinations. Who would be willing to lay down their wands and let the past flow like water under a bridge? It wasn’t just unlikely - it was impossible to imagine.
Seeing his friends again, drawn in by the sense of obligation and duty that had been drilled into him by his father, Dirk felt a renewed resolve. It wasn’t just a cause that he was fighting for, after all. While the big picture was what kept getting bandied about in the press, the battles were for by and for people. Brothers for sisters, daughters for mothers. Friends protecting friends. Lovers shielding lovers. He could no more leave the fight behind that leave his humanity behind, ignoring all the sacrifices that Lily, or Daisy, or anyone of the Order Members had given for him and for everyone. The sacrifices that he’d made for them.
“It probably doesn’t need to be said, but…It’s bloody good to see both of you,” Dirk said in earnest agreement with Daisy. Without a thought, the lad reached out and touched both of them softly, his hand wrapping their arms in a momentary gentle squeeze before letting them fall to the ground once more. “I mean, after the Highlands…I’m not sure I knew exactly which faces I’d be seeing today, you know?” Taking the time to let his brown eyes find those of both of his friends in turn, Dirk smiled a little wider before sighing, his thoughts drawn back to those they’d lost in the past week. “Have you seen the other members much this week”
Daisy’s words sent Dirk’s attention once more to their surroundings, the castle they’d all called home for seven years. He couldn’t think of a time, even in the middle of the night, that the entire place had been this quiet. The odd sound of a professor shuffling about through the halls excepted, the usual hum of constant conversation and occasional whoops of delight were completely absent, a thick and uncomfortable quiet replacing them. “It’s mental, really. Being back. Just wish it were for something a little less dark.”
The trio stood silent for a moment, with Dirk’s eyes flitting between the two obviously weary faces. It was difficult to see the girls, both of whom had always been the very image of vitality and happiness, drawn into such sorrow. He knew his own face was likely no different, but Daisy’s countenance was of particular contrast. He’d known the girl well, having spent many hours with Mary lazing about the Hufflepuff Common Room. She’d always been a ray of sunlight, bright enough to lighten even the dreariest of days. She rather reminded him of Mary, and he spent a large part of his seventh year in her company, helping run her Muggle Studies group when it was required. Dirk wasn’t surprised that she’d joined the Order, but he felt a certain obligation, an intense protectiveness of the positive spirit that she embodied. “You know, there’s no sense wasting a beautiful morning,” Dirk suggested suddenly, glancing once more up towards the streams of light that pushed through the windows high above. “Want to go sit by the lake for awhile? We’ve got some time, before the - the ceremony,” he finished lamely before he pushed himself off the wall, standing up straight once more.
The squeeze on the shoulder from Dirk was a touch that she did not recoil from, but accepted and even leaned into -- Lily sucked in a breath, closing her eyes briefly before letting them flicker open, drinking in the sight before her. Laying her eyes on two people with their hearts set on the Order was enough to make her heart soar; all the talk floating around in the air about the two sides of the war crumbling truly broke her heart -- to any who knew Lily even in the least bit, one of the most ferocious things to her was her loyalty to the Order -- almost to a fault, if one may add. There was nothing that could sway her away from her loyalty to the Order and the friends that she once held so near and dear felt millions of miles away -- but these people, the two in front of her, however not the Marauders or Marlene, were her friends. And it was damn good to see them.
Daisy, Daisy Hookum, two years her junior and bright as a light, so eager to be a change and young, Lily saw herself in the girl; and however silly it may have been, to want to protect someone merely two years younger than her, but Lily made quiet vow to herself, all those years ago at Hogwarts, to never let that gorgeous twinkle in her eyes disappear. As of late, Lily herself had seen the sparkle in her own eyes slowly get sucked away, leaving dregs of reckless idealism in its wake -- she doesn’t want that for Daisy, not then, not now, not ever.
And Dirk, Dirk Cresswell, a batch mate, someone she’d sat with in numerous classes and one of the other talented students who sat with her in the Slug Club, being two of the few muggleborns that showed up at the meetings and parties and stuck together, for sometimes the glares and turned-up noses of their pureblood counterparts made them flinch.
It was no wonder that, Lily too, reached over and expressed her love and thanks that they were alive and there, in front of her -- each of them received as tight of a hug that she could muster. Lily Evans was notorious for the way she loved to mother -- caring for others was second nature to her, even if the expense meant that she spent a little less time caring for herself.
Most of the words exchanged were a blur to Lily after the embraces were dealt out, with the odd nod and here and there or a few remarks elicited from time to time -- it was a habit of hers, nowadays, getting lost in her own thoughts to drown out what was being said; however the topic of conversation exchanged between Dirk and Daisy nothing inherently pessimistic, certain words struck certain cords inside of Lily that merely broke her heart. Have you seen any other order members this week? made her think about Marlene appearing at the Order headquarters mere days after the Battle, feeling so far away despite being so close; and after alienating herself from the rest of the world for the rest of the other days leading up to being called up to Hogwarts took away any other chance of seeing any other members. The remarks about being back, at the school they all knew and loved for such a... Heartbreaking reason, that broke off a good chunk from her heart. But she was Lily, happy, optimistic Lily, so she smiled that endearing smile, trying to convince herself and those around her that everything would be alright.
“ -- The lake is gorgeous at this time of year, ” She knew that for a fact -- so many nights spent crowded over bonfires with her housemates and school mates alike, singing and laughing and living during the beginning-of-term celebrations; the memory of sneaking out and having a late night swim with the girls mere five years ago crosses her mind briefly, almost pushing a laugh to her lips. The lake had always held a sense of camaraderie -- she hoped that the three of them, going over there and taking in the view of the water and surroundings, would at least, for a moment, give them a sense of happiness, in the light of everything that has happened. “ I think it would be great if we go down there; old time’s sake, maybe? ” She’d already begun walking towards the nearest swinging double doors, more than ready to take a breath into the open air. The four stone walls cradling them didn’t feel like home anymore, and it felt wrong -- it almost felt trapping; empty and desolate instead of being welcoming and lively like she had always remembered it. Lily was more than ready for a change in surrounding.
andxprongs:
“ It doesn’t have to be a date, if you don’t want it to be, ” Maybe he said it a little too quickly. Because he did want it to be a date, but he wanted it to be a start-over date. He wanted it to be a date where they could just forget he had ever messed everything up, and pretend like they hadn’t only just barely survived the battle. He wanted to pretend, just for a little while. “ And we don’t– we don’t have to, if you don’t want to. I just– I thought it was a good idea. “
“ Oh -- I just thought... ” She trailed off, trying to find the words to say; it was almost ironic how she seemed to walk around him on eggshells nowadays, despite him being one of the people she knew she would have to never do that around. But the past few days have served as a wake up call -- James was one of the only people that she loved that was still in arm’s reach, and despite everything that had happened or will happen, she intended to keep it that way. So Lily sighed, and shook her head. “ What I meant to say was, yeah. I think I’d like that. ” Pretending -- it was a thing that children did, not adults, not soldiers. But it felt alright.

SHARING A DESSERT;
1977, Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Shoppe.
“ – You’ve got a little something there, ”
Lily laughed out loud when it was pointed out, taking a napkin and patting it upon the spot right to the left of her nose where a fudge stain had settled itself; the kind of laugh that wasn’t controlled or forced -- it was the kind that made you want to throw your head back and close your eyes, not giving a damn how you sounded like or how many heads turned to see who was laughing. Laughter and smiles were not difficult to come by from Lily, but the genuine, youthful kind that wasn’t made out of stubborn obligation or what-have-you were reserved for a certain handful of people -- one of them being one Alice Fortescue, the very woman who sat across her, only a banana split between them. Both ladies had two elbows up on the quaint little table, sitting along the cobblestone road, feeling the warm summer sun against their skin.
It was great that Alice took the time out of her busy schedule to meet up with her -- although it was summer, Lily was sure that there was a lot filling up the schedule of one very busy Auror. After a stressful term, it only felt right to reconvene with the very girl she looked up to and loved so; a date but not really, hovering over and picking apart a banana split with the promise of a stroll out in muggle London post-sundae.
And as Lily went in for another spoonful of the stuff, her eyes caught sight of something that sparkled. On Alice’s hand -- Alice’s finger, and ring finger, for that matter. When her eyes rose to meet with hers, seeing that oh-so breathtaking look of joy and elation spreading across Alice’s features, two silent nods from both parties later and Lily was bounding out of her chair, giggling and laughing and leaning over the table (most likely getting fudge on her sundress in the process, but that was the least of her worries) to give Alice the hugest hug she could muster.
“ When were you going to tell me? ”
“ Sometime soon, if you’d just have shut up about Potter, ”
“ -- Touché, but I know someone’s not going to shut up about Frank anytime soon, ”
So at the wedding, a year or so later, when Lily is fixing Alice’s hair into that chignon that they had seen in one of those muggle magazines and that Lily was hellbent on making work and she finishes, when Lily hands the bouquet of assorted flowers to Alice (a few of which were lillies), and sees Alice begin to tear up, the redhead’s hand comes up to wipe a tear before it falls, giving Alice the biggest smile and saying --
“ -- You’ve got a little something there, ”
Making them both laugh and calming Alice’s jitters, however making the bride just a touch late for the procession down the aisle -- it has been an endearing joke shared since.
andxprongs:
“ Let’s go out for some drinks. Just you and me, no one else. I’ll be – it’ll be relaxing. And you and I both know that we’re more than deserving. “
" -- Go out? James, I’m not sure... ” She was resolute in her decision against going out, after everything that had happened -- but when she met his eye, Lily couldn’t help but feel bad. Despite his faults and shortcomings, one thing was for sure, and it was that James only meant well and aimed to make things well. “ -- It has been forever since we’ve had a date, ” She sighed, as if to appear nonchalant, but she truly did miss the James and Lily they were before their world went to hell. And surely a couple drinks and a date in the midst of a war wouldn’t completely bring them back, but even for just a few moments, it would be good enough.
Lily Evans.
Most admirable quality:
The kindness. I just- I don’t understand how anyone does it, or I guess how she does it. There’s something that radiates off of her- it’s like this purpley pink haze and it smells fresh and floral and there’s just something about her that makes me want to smile.
Most attractive physical feature:
Her eyes. They say eyes are the windows to the soul, and Lily’s are open and honest and it’s something I’ve always noticed and appreciated.
Most annoying habit:
I guess I would have to say kindness again? I just- It appreciate the gestures of being sweet and kind at first, but I’m too hardened to be around it for too long. I always expect that there’s a motive, and I don’t like thinking that about Lily.
Something they would like to do with them:
Win the war. We need people like Lily when the world becomes to harsh.
Lily Evans.
Most admirable quality:
Kindness, need I say more?
Most attractive physical feature:
Mouth. Whether she smiles or exclaims in surprise, Lily really has a beautiful mouth.
Most annoying habit:
Indecisiveness, seriously! How can anybody work with that?
Something they would like to do with them:
Narcissa would never admit it but she is quite curious about the Muggle World and would like to be introduced to some of the strangeness… Who better to tour it with than a muggleborn
Lily Evans.
Most admirable quality:Unnerving as it is she’s good at staying positive and strong and if Amycus was honest he would like to have that quality himself. She’s light. The other end of a scale where he has to look up to her and he despises that she seemingly unbreakable. A stonewall can’t hold forever though. They crumble. They will crumble.
Most attractive physical feature:Her eyelashes. They are so long and thin and a little dark, but he can’t quite overcome how they curl (almost) up to her eyebrows. It’s so nice to watch them flutter. Like butterflies. Amycus hates that too.
Most annoying habit:Her smiling face. It’s like she can produce it even if she doesn’t feel like it and he can’t stand that. He’s seen her with so many people and she smiles non-stop. It could be just a game, but she’d always seemed so genuine.
Something they would like to do with them: Break her into tiny pieces. He wants to see her cry for once. Look at how that smile disappears, wiped away by… oh, but that’s not something he should talk about.
Lily Evans.
Most admirable quality: Her perseverance was always something Roxanne admired, especially during school.Most attractive physical feature: She’d kill for eyes like those.Most annoying habit: Not much about Lily annoys her, but if she would think before acting, that would be nice.Something they would like to do with them: She wished she could befriend her, but after leaving the Order hanging she’s no longer sure the likelihood of that.
Lily Evans.
Most admirable quality:
Her bravery. They’re both lions but there’s always been something about Lily that has made Marlene crave the bravery the red-head displays.
Most attractive physical feature:
Her hair. Marlene is loathe to admit that anyone has nicer hair than herself, but she makes an exception in Lily’s case.
Most annoying habit:
At the moment, it’s her being dedicated to the Order. Marlene wants nothing more than for Lily to walk away and stay safe while Janus ends the war, but she knows that Lily never will.
Something they would like to do with them:
Tell her everything. Confess all she’s done and let Lily fix it because Lily has always been good at fixing Marlene’s little problems. But this isn’t a little problem and Marlene knows she can never tell.
Narcissa
MOST ADMIRABLE QUALITY;
Confidence. The way she carries herself is a feat on its own -- always with a chin up and a commanding air about her, yet always seeming so graceful and elegant -- she doesn’t have an idea how she does it.
MOST ATTRACTIVE PHYSICAL FEATURE;
Lips. Always an immaculate pout or a sly grin on those lipstick lined lips.
MOST ANNOYING HABIT;
Lily cannot stand the prissy entitlement that comes with being a woman of esteemed pureblood heritage, never having to lift a finger to clean or cook or what have you.
SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THEM;
There’s really nothing that Lily would like to do with her, seeing as in the moment, they’re worlds away, both in terms of social standings and sides of the war.
Alice!
MOST ADMIRABLE QUALITY;
Strength. Ever since Lily first met Alice way back in Hogwarts, she’d looked up to her with starry eyes – maybe it was her dueling skills, or the way she always bit back and yet, always seemed to have a smile to flash at the end of the day. But as the years went on, it became clear to Lily that it was her strength that she admired the most, the fact that she never really stumbles into crossing her boundaries, and more so walks straight through them with a smile. The way she always manages to keep resolute is something that never fails to amaze one Lily Evans.
MOST ATTRACTIVE PHYSICAL FEATURE;
Her eyes. Whether its a fire or a certain sparkle that is caught in them, they are always a sight to see.
MOST ANNOYING HABIT;
It’s much appreciated for the most part, but it seeing Alice running around and worrying over the well-being of others while putting her own on the backburner is painful.
SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THEM;
Lie down somewhere quiet, tune out the world around them, indulge in chocolate and simply talk; talk like how they do, without having to step over eggshells; pepper the air with laughter. Put the term letting your hair down to use and take in each other’s comforting presence and remind each other that there is still so much good in the world.
Rabastan! =D
MOST ADMIRABLE QUALITY;
Brotherhood. Lily has seen the Lestrange brothers in her years at Hogwarts – the pair, however separated by three years in age, were still rather close, or bonded, for that matter. Enjoyment and practice of the Dark Arts aside, it was something that Lily had grown a sick jealousy of, for she too, was three years apart from her own sibling, and they were practically estranged. Once upon a time, Lily too, played follow the leader with her sister – cast in the shadow of the older one, wanting, more than anything, to be like her. It landed her being resented and turned away by the very person she wanted to hold dear; and what did it do for him? It made his brother proud.
MOST ATTRACTIVE PHYSICAL FEATURE;
His hair. Lily has a penchant for messy dark hair.
MOST ANNOYING HABIT;
Oh, I don’t know, maybe that he’s a deatheater?
SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THEM;
Hello, Lily Evans is not here at the moment. Please leave a message after the beep. Beeep.
