āThey donāt look like they have [x].ā
You donāt get to decide what someone with [x] does and does not look like, even if you have [x]. Even if youāre a mental professional, appearance and mental health are completely different. Yes, visible failure to take care of oneās self can be a sign of poor mental health, but it doesnāt *need* to be there for [x] to still be present.
āI have [x] and we/I donāt do this.ā
Everyoneās experiences are different; this includes symptoms. One person with [x] may have different behaviors, hobbies, symptoms, etc than another. This does not make their condition any less real or valid.
āTheyāre faking [x] for attention.ā
If they want attention, you donāt have to give it to them. Fake claiming is a form of attention. If you think someone is faking a condition, block their account and move on; itās better than taking the risk of hurting someone with [x] and making them doubt themselves.
āTheyāre mimicking or spreading are harmful stereotype about [x]!ā
This is a valid concern. Block and report the account. (If the platform requires you to select a reason, āspamā or āmisinformationā will work best) If you feel comfortable with it, tell your friends to do the same.
āTheyāre self diagnosing, which means they donāt have it.ā
Nope! This is not true. Self ādiagnosingā is valid as long as you clarify itās not a professional ādiagnosisā. You can say āI align with many symptoms of [x]ā or āI think I might have [x]ā, but āI have [x]ā is NOT okay to claim if you havenāt been professionally diagnosed.
NOT EVERYONE HAS THE RESOURCES TO GET PROFESSIONAL DIAGNOSIS. THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT, THEIR PARENTS OR GUARDIANS MAY NOT āBELIEVEā IN IT, ETC.
