I know what I’m doing this weekend
So yesterday I went to see an exhibition of the paintings of Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664), a Spanish painter who created striking compositions and possessed a magnificent skill for painting fabrics
His paintings were inspiring but I can't get over the fact that he visualised the concept of the Virgin and Christ being risen by the heavenly host as the pair of them sitting/standing on a pile of baby cherub heads, surrounded by more ghostly detached baby heads staring at them from the clouds/ acting as halos.
Maybe this was the traditional concept and I just haven't seen enough 17th century Catholic art to know, but for my ignorant eyes these are so delightfully weird that I'm sorely tempted to spend another £20 to go stare at them again.

Vår, Tokyo, Mishima, Croatian Amor…
“We played the last ever Vår Show and everywhere you looked there would be Japanese people in tears. I played a Croatian Amor show in a queer goth club called Club Sodom at 3.30 in the morning and had beautiful boys painted white with me on stage as props. After the show these Japanese gay goths took us to an old run down gay bar that Mishima used to frequent, we spoke to the old bartender that could tell stories of what he had been like. And we have had snow fights, and of course we sing karaoke. Everything is lit up, it is like a fantasy place. If this is what the future is going to be like, its really not that bad.”

"Because of this strange schizophrenia, books and the writing of them have become embroidery on a dying way of life. Because there is a contempt for the process of writing, for writing as a way of discovering meaning and truth, and for reading as a piece of that same process, we destroy with regularity the few serious writers we have. We turn them into comic-book figures, bleed them of all privacy and courage and common sense, exorcise their vision from them as sport, demand that they entertain or be ignored into oblivion. And it is a great tragedy, for the work of the writer has never been more important than it is now in Amerika.
Many see that in this nightmared land, language has no meaning and the work of the writer is ruined. Many see that the triumph of authoritarian consciousness is its ability to render the spoken and written word meaningless--so that we cannot talk or hear each other speak. It is the work of the writer to reclaim the language from those who use it to justify murder, plunder, violation. The writer can and must do the revolutionary work of using words to communicate, as community."
