It’s in the little things that she does. Waking up to the sun streaming on her face, on sheets that are white with little pink painted flowers… alone. It’s in the space that she walks from her bed to the kitchen, in their her little stone house, with the pots and pans that can serve two.
Every step feels out of place, incongruent, out of touch with the reality she was so sure of, moments before when she was nestled in her dreams. Her fingers trace the walls of stone, the little strips of concrete that hold it together as she remembers the days she spent building it.
(they’d spent days building their haven, their escape from reality. They’d argued and bantered, made love on the floor of a house that didn’t have a roof.)

Am I the only one not excited for this Will and Nico book??😭 I really want to be but noticing Rick’s mischaracterization for his major characters throughout the years just makes me really hope he finally leaves them alone. I mean there was already a decline with this characterization/writing in HOO. (Ex. Percy and Annabeth’s trauma being glossed over like nothing happened, the ridiculous let down that BOO was, failure to establish powerful relationships between all the characters unlike in PJO, etc.) And I feel like it just got progressively worse after HOO. Don’t even get me started on Demigods and Nachos and Trials of Apollo.
Overall I think Rick is great writer but he’s somewhat lost his touch with the original characters. And that’s okay! I think it’s always awesome when he focuses on new characters and he can create new ideas and not be restricted by the characterization he’s forgotten about in the past. So I’m all for Rick’s writing but please leave the OG’s alone😭
Also apparently they’re going back to Tartarus to rescue Bob????? So that was another fake out death just like Leo??? Literally ruins all the emotions after his sacrifice in HOH??? Mannnnn put the pen down😭😭
skfjfjfkjkl i absolutely love when individuals in a relationship contrast in ways that produce harmony in their relationship if they figured out how to be together… take percy and annabeth for example. i could go into all the ways they fit each other using mbti analysis but that’s a bit inaccessible so just in general….. their strengths, shortcomings, and desires complement so well! annabeth has quite a visceral fear of abandonment and has developed a stubborn defense mechanism as a traumatic response to that, so she’s deathly afraid of being vulnerable and equally clueless as to what to do when people are vulnerable with her because she’s never had the opportunity to learn how to deal with that before, but here comes along someone who is just so unconditional and wholehearted and kind that he doesn’t think twice to accept her and be with her for who she is and make space for her frustrations and her flaws and never utters a word of complaint or discontentment or irritation and is just so good and so open that even she is driven to change. like, he’s exactly the kind of person annabeth needs in her life to serve as a catalyst for her emotional growth, and i wish this side of their dynamic were explored more. she loves him because he makes her better. she fell for him because he makes her better. she loves him because being with him has allowed her to glimpse a life after healing, towards healing, a relationship that lasts, and she scarcely let herself entertain the potential of it because it’s so new and big and, worst of all, something that is terrifyingly possible. she kept resisting it because she’s used to taking risks everywhere else but in her relationships with people and has no idea how to navigate these new feelings. he was a constant in her life and she’s never had a constant before.
and then there’s percy, who is rough around the edges but soft and steady at the core and meets people where they are and cares so much… meeting someone who has learned to put her defenses up as a default mode and who hasn’t known much love or affection and it shows—in the way she holds herself, higher than she feels, full of emotion that she doesn’t understand and doesn’t know what to do with, someone who has only known impermanence and escape. he doesn’t need to understand all of it to accept her anyway. it’s harder to see how annabeth impacts percy but it’s not every day you see someone who reflects in their composure the burden of having to grow up too fast and fall in love with that strength. it’s the platitude of “falling in love because not despite of people’s flaws” transformed into something real and palpable because it’s happening before your eyes. it’s just like percy to experience first love like that lol… honestly only someone like he can have the capacity for it. like i said, they complement each other through their contrasting points.
annabeth: fears vulnerability, doesn’t understand it, thinks it is weakness (at least, she knows it makes her feel exposed and therefore weak), has never spent time in a substantial relationship her entire life, just needs to be loved

Annabeth stans are like "well characters are allowed to have flaws >:(" — like yes, characters having flaws is great, but if they're written as flaws. If the so called flaws are never so much as acknowledged as flaws within the narrative, maybe that's not the Deep Nuanced writing you all act like it is. "She's like that because of her trauma!!!1!" Maybe, but if a character treats people like shit because of her trauma and then never recovers from said trauma, that's not satisfactory writing.
The issue is not Annabeth having flaws or being traumatized or using unhealthy coping mechanisms or whatever. The issue is said behaviours being written as inherent to her character and not even being shown as flaws or trauma response, and her never developing to heal from her trauma or overcome her flaws. Rick never tried to make Annabeth get her shit together and become a better person because fans love her as she is and it gets him money.

Learning how to kiss is it’s own kind of homework. Probably best done away from the company of parents.
Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! It’ll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them. It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?
Reblogging this because when I went to college back in the mid-90s, I could have used all this advice. I was the first person in my family to go to university, no one told me any of this, and the internet was not really A Thing yet. (For perspective, there were an entire two computers on campus which had access to the World Wide Web, because it was such a new concept that demand for it was low.) This would have been relevant then and it’s relevant now.
Email your professors ahead of class or ask on the first day if the current edition of the textbook is required!
Our university’s campus bookstore required the professors to “require” the most current edition of the textbook, which was mostly a scam!
Unless there’s a workbook in it, most professors are fine if you go back 1-2 editions because there’s usually only minor changes. Instead of buying a $300 brand new textbook, you can likely buy it for $8.00, and I recommend www.thriftbooks.com as a resource
