🧩 How to Outline Without Feeling Like You’re Dying
(a non-suffering writer’s guide to structure, sanity, and staying mildly hydrated)
Hey besties. Let’s talk outlines. Specifically: how to do them without crawling into the floorboards and screaming like a Victorian ghost.
If just hearing the word “outline” sends your brain into chaos-mode, welcome. You’re not broken, you’re just a writer whose process has been hijacked by Very Serious Advice™ that doesn’t fit you. You don’t need to build a military-grade beat sheet. You don’t need a sixteen-tab spreadsheet. You don’t need to suffer to be legitimate. You just need a structure that feels like it’s helping you, not haunting you.
So. Here’s how to outline your book without losing your soul (or all your serotonin).
—
🍓 1. Stop thinking of it as “outlining.”
That word is cursed. Try “story sketch.” “Narrative roadmap.” “Planning soup.” Whatever gets your brain to chill out. The goal here is to understand your story, not architect it to death.
Outlining isn’t predicting everything. It’s just building a scaffold so your plot doesn't fall over mid-draft.
—
🧠 2. Find your plot skeleton.
There are lots of plot structures floating around: 3-Act. Save the Cat. Hero’s Journey. Take what helps, ignore the rest.
If all else fails, try this dirt-simple one I use when my brain is mush:
Act I: What’s the problem?
Act II: Why can’t we fix it?
Act III: What finally makes us change?
Ending: What does that change cost?
You don’t need to fill in every detail. You just need to know what’s driving your character, what’s blocking them, and what choices will change them.
—
🛒 3. Make a “scene bucket list.”
Before you start plotting in order, write down a list of scenes you know you want: key vibes, emotional beats, dramatic reveals, whatever.
These are your anchors. Even if you don’t know where they go yet, they’re proof your story already exists, it just needs connecting tissue.
Bonus: when you inevitably get stuck later, one of these might be the scene that pulls you back in.
—
🧩 4. Start with 5 key scenes. That’s it.
Here’s a minimalist approach that won’t kill your momentum:
Opening (what sucks about their world?)
Catalyst (what throws them off course?)
Midpoint (what makes them confront themselves?)
Climax (what breaks or remakes them?)
Ending (what’s changed?)
Plot the spaces between those after you’ve nailed these. Think of it like nailing down corners of a poster before smoothing the rest.
You’re not “doing it wrong” if you start messy. A messy start is a start.
—
🔧 5. Use the outline to ask questions, not just answer them.
Every section of your outline should provoke a question that the scene must answer.
Instead of:
— “Chapter 5: Sarah finds a journal.”
Try:
— “Chapter 5: What truth does Sarah find that complicates her next move?”
This makes your story active, not just a list of stuff that happens. Outlines aren’t just there to record, they’re tools for curiosity.
—
🪤 6. Beware of the Perfectionist Trap™.
You will not get the entire plot perfect before you write. Don’t stall your momentum waiting for a divine lightning bolt of Clarity. You get clarity by writing.
Think of your outline as a map drawn in pencil, not ink. It’s allowed to evolve. It should evolve.
You’re not building a museum exhibit. You’re making a prototype.
—
🧼 7. Clean up after you start drafting.
Here’s the secret: the first draft will teach you what the story’s actually about. You can go back and revise the outline to fit that. It’s not wasted work, it’s evolving scaffolding.
You don’t have to build the house before you live in it. You can live in the mess while you figure out where the kitchen goes.
—
🛟 8. If you’re a discovery writer, hybrid it.
A lot of “pantsers” aren’t anti-outline, they’re just anti-stiff-outline. That’s fair.
Try using “signposts,” not full scenes:
Here’s a secret someone’s hiding.
Here’s the emotional breakdown scene.
Here’s a betrayal. Maybe not sure by who yet.
Let the plot breathe. Let the characters argue with your outline. That tension is where the fun happens.
—
🪴 TL;DR but emotionally:
You don’t need a flawless outline to write a good book. You just need a loose net of ideas, a couple of emotional anchors, and the willingness to pivot when your story teaches you something new.
Outlines should support you, not suffocate you.
Let yourself try. Let it be imperfect. That’s where the good stuff lives.
Go forth and outline like a gently chaotic legend 🧃

Hi sorry my tumblr Is not working Best so i get messages slow but Can you Still do sad headcanons for amos kane
I am so sorry for recvesting before i hope you are not angry?😓
Hi dw im not angry/gen. I dont have it up in my "i wont write" section. Dw we're chill! ill write the dad headcannons! Ill tag you in it!
(btw! whats your native language? mine's spanish! maybe theres a chance we can communicate if u speak portuguese/spanish)
I've been asking ISM fans on the ism discord for help w the LWTTT rewite. And I just had the siliest idea of a Dev making a side acc just to contribute w/o having the whole "this is a dev of the game" issue be brought into the fanfic.
it's so cool when people have a genuine love for creating beautiful pieces of fiction, especially in the midst of the ongoing issue with AI-generated content and the abhorrent growth of censorship in first world countries. real writers and writers of any and all genres, you are loved, you are seen, you are appreciated.♥️
I genuinely wonder if people realize how many projects get abandoned because the readership "wasn't there", when in reality, the readership just stayed silent. It's a big thing in trad pub that book series get discontinued because readers pirate the books or wait until the series is finished to buy a copy, leading the publisher to think that nobody actually wants the book enough to continue the series, but it happens with indie creators too.
I've discontinued a lot of free, online series because it's not worth putting 3-5 hours a week into posting a project for no readers. Sometimes I finish the series for me but just never post it again, other times I don't finish it at all because it feels more worthwhile to put my time into other things. Sometimes I hear from readers who are sad or upset that I didn't finish something they were liking, but the *reason* it never got finished is because I didn't know anyone liked it. If you like something, tell the creator, tell your friends, make some noise about it. If you would be sad if a story never finished, make that interest known because one of my biggest considerations before discontinuing a series is "will people miss this? Will I be letting people down" and 9/10 times, I come to the conclusion of "no, it doesn't even seem like anyone's reading this" only to learn after I've moved on that apparently someone was.
I've said this before in a different way, and this post said it so well. With real examples.
If you like something, tell people.
If you want more content from an artist or author, if you like their stuff, tell them. It will give them creative fuel to keep going. And often it gives them other resources as well.
Recommend a work to other people. Leave a comment or a review. It doesn't have to be long, just genuine, a sentence or two.
Not many people know that a book's success is judged by book reviews as well as sales. Review the book on Amazon or another site to help it pass the metric of success and be recognized by publishers and retailers.
hi how are you doing i saw amos kane headcanons and i love it Can you do Amos kane x Fem reader like they are married but he stil have crush on reader you know like Still in honeymoon phase❤️ they meet st museum like how carter and sadie react to amos and aunt reader she Is kind . loving . carring, but she know how to kick ass i hope that Is okay sorry my English Is not that good i hope you have good day/night❤️❤️❤️
Heyhey!! Thank you for requesting! Happy you loved my OG post!. Here's your req! ↴
AMOS KANE- DATING HEADCANNONS. (Fem.Magician reader!)
You two met at a museum. You were just looking at some shabti and you were cooing over how cute they looked. Amos saddles up to you casually, he'd been eyeing you since he heard you cooing at the lil guys.
"You know, they say these li'l guys could transform with a magic word. Wonder what brings these alive".
You look up/down at him in surpirse. You recognize him as part of the Kane family. You smiled, and showed him your amulet (up to you what that looks like) and he recognizes it.
He tips his hat at you and you nodd in acknowledgement. Both of you decide to take a tour together. He offers you his arm, like a gentleman.
Thats how it started.
You two were, and remain, whipped as whipped cream for eachother. The honeymoon phase never ended.
He still offers you his arm,at any point. You help him tie his tie, hes flirting the whole time, and youre flirting back (might pull him from his tie for a kiss!!!). He puts a hand on the small of your back (or your back) to help you navigate big crowds. You stand beside him with pride, and both of you gush about the other to anyone who will (or wont) listen.
Petnames galore! "Darl',sweetheart,darlin',my beloved,my queen/king/majesty/liege,my heart,my muse,my melody,hon,'sug" "big guy,handsome,my king/pharaoh (<- he gets so flustered) my melody,my musician,my artist".
Julius never hears the end of it. And hes very happy for his brother.
Sadie and Carter adore you. You match Amos' quick witt in your own way, make them laugh, take good care of both of them. (if you cook or bake, or do anything artistic or make stuff for them, they cherish it forever).
They see you in action with your magic or your Path Of The Gods (My nerd ass likes Toth, and i like Set too. hes fun). You teach them to make shabti, and master their magic and vessel powers.
They fall asleep on you and you might start/will start sobbing and Amos will take a pic while sobbing himself lmao.
Khufu and Philipp adore you. You spoil them rotten and Amos has to deal with the consequences (hes happy you like his pets)
Sett flirts with you to get under Amos' skin but hes also his wingman.
Jazz bar dates, sometimes u watch shows, sometimes you watch Amos jamm out on stage.
When he becomes chief lector, you cheer so hard for him and you are his right hand and number one fan. He still remains that gentleman you fell in love with.
You two still watch and go to basketball games. Barrack for the Lakers, obviously
you wear matching dresses/suits with him. He'll do you hair. (french braid, or black hairstyles if you have black heritage!. Will learn any hairstyles from your culture)
If you're white, he'll be happy either way with you! (in my og headcannons i said he liked latinas. But dont take it as a rule!). He'll meet your family and try his best to get along with them, your family or friends will love you. If you speak another language (german, swedish, spanish, portuguese, etc) he'll learn it for you!.
If you're black, you can bond over your shared culture, upbringing and black culture. Cook outs, black artists and history,Black jazz like Ella Fritzgerald,Louis Armstrong,Nina Simone, etc. Cook your favorite foods, hair wash/maintenance day!!
If youre latina (like me!) he'll learn your language, cook your favorite meals, dance with you, probably win your family over. He's gonna play Elvis Crespo or Luis Miguel for your (probably female) family member and win her over. He's charming like that.
Also, he will barrack for your country in the world cup! (Hi,im argentine. I love football!) <3
Summary: Long way to the truth explores Lucas Cole's psyche and inner turmoil as he travels from Florida to Washington chasing a decades long mystery. The road brings him space to think, new adventures and old friends.
Those who have been around already know one of my fave ocs i've made for this AU. <333
With me youll never be hungry.
Come Hell or high water.
Abundance or famine.
In Spring and Winter.
Bountiful Summer or Fall.
Your belly will never sing its craving musings
Wether you are in the mountains or my farm
Because feeding is love.
And my kitchen is always full,
And the stove is always on
