it broke today that biden airdropped aid to gaza. other than the fact that this is an obvious pr move ahead of his re-election campaign, i think it's important to stress how ineffective this method is compared to just allowing humanitarian aid to come through. airdrops carry far less aid than truck convoys, for one, and require an airdrop zone with a lot of idealistic conditions that don't often coincide. this is a major reason why you hear a lot of airdrops being conducted at beaches--and why a lot of them have been blown to the sea. and what's even more dangerous about that is that a lot of these palestinians are malnourished, starving, in a delirious state of mind. many of them are so utterly hungry that they'd be willing to swim through just to get their hands on a sodden meal. but apparently this is the best thing the us, which literally funds israel's ongoing genocide, can do for palestinians at the moment.
i think the biggest reason i find this so insidious is because it implies the us has to play by israel's rules, even though it's basically already confirmed that there are us soldiers in palestine. the us is telling us that the best thing it can do is airdrop aid, rather than strongarm israel into allowing ground-delievred aid to come through. the us is acting like it has red tape it has to contend with.
but the us is the red tape. the us literally holds the power. it knows what it's doing. it's actually jarring watching the united states government try to infantilize itself.
I haven't seen anyone posting about this, but this is why esim donations are so important. This picture was shared by @mirna_elhelbawi both on her instagram and the eSim Donors broadcast channel (also on instagram). please consider donating an esim, as israel is actively trying to block palestinian voices from being heard. for more information check here, Mirna's own instagram, @connectinghumanity_, or gazaesims.com. there are esim plans as cheap as 10 dollars, and on her website you can find discount codes. they are running low on all kinds of esims but the top three on their priority list right now are nomad esims (middle east region or israel), holafly esims (egypt), and simly esims (middle east). you can check the order of priority on here, as it varies weekly.
This happens all over the world, because the US government (like other empires before it) rewards charities whose "food aid" involves shipping American crops and food to a country, rather than helping that countries agriculture sector grow so it can sustain itself. In fact, the large amounts of "free" food donated by charities can destroy local agriculture because they cannot sell their crops, forcing them to find new jobs or start growing cash crops to sell instead.
Empires actively work against trying to "teach people how to fish," because they want countries dependent on "charity" from the empire and exploitative international trade. Bill and Hillary Clinton's actions in Haiti are despicable, but not unique.
"Charity" under capitalism is rarely done for the long-term benefit of those given "aid," and that is by design.

This Black History Month, reflect for a moment on the fact that George Washington Carver, famously "the inventor of peanut butter and more than 100 industrial uses for peanuts" wasn't, like, Doc Brown fucking around in his garage because he really liked peanuts but was specifically trying to introduce larger use of a nitrogen fixing legume into crop rotations against cotton monoculture which was destroying yields, livelihoods and the biosphere, and how most agribusiness farming now just destroys that topsoil on purpose and continues to grow a cotton monoculture (or soy or corn or whichever local monoculture is profitable) using petrochemical derived fertilizer, which is one element driving climate change
Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful heart surgery. He also founded the first nonsegregated hospital in America because he was keenly aware of disparate health outcomes by race which is still a problem today.
WEB Dubois was a part of the delegations for the birth of the UN. His proposal to include in the charter that "the colonial system of government … is undemocratic, socially dangerous and a main cause of wars" was not adapted for the final draft. We might see inaction against colonial violence to this day as part of the failure of others to heed his warnings there.
I feel like so often when we look at Black History Month so much of it is driven by factoids but when taken as history in context its about a direct line from decades and centuries to what is happening right now.

Repost: We grieve the loss of Fathi Ghaben, iconic Palestinian painter, born in Hiribya in the Gaza strip in 1947.
He was mainly known for his folklore art and depiction of resistance through existence and culture - "His figures are captured in motion as they labor, protest, tend to their fields, celebrate, and dance. The raw power of the working-class is there in Ghaben's artwork, as it is in him." (Quote from @alserkalavenue).
He passed away yesterday (Feb 25, 2024) as a result of the neglect of the occupation. He was waiting for the Israeli authorities to grant him permission to to leave Gaza to receive medical aid after multiple requests.

Sorry to put more of this on your dashboards but i need y'all to know. Aaron Bushnell was trying to get out of the military prior to his action on february 25th. He was sick of being complicit and was trying to get out. His contract was almost over and he was trying to leave the air force.
When you join the military you sign a contract for a fixed period of service. It is likely he opted for a 4 year contract. You cannot "just quit" like a normal job. Attempts to avoid finishing your contract can result in felony charges and jail time. appealing as a conscientious objector is possible, but extremely difficult for noncombat roles.
He was trying to utilize the skill bridge program the DoD offers, to work for a civilian company for the last 180 days of his contracted service period. That would have let him cease his complicity even sooner.
This was the last act of a desperate man trying to draw attention to the horrors he felt he was complicit in, complicity he was legally barred from stopping.
He felt complicit, he was trapped in the military, he was trying to get out, and he couldn't take it any longer.
Hiiiii Amanda ^_____^
Aaron Bushnell died. The active duty US soldier who self immolated in front of the Israeli embassy died of his wounds - he died screaming “Free Palestine” as he burned. He said he no longer wanted to be complicit in genocide. This is the second person to self immolate because of Palestinian Genocide and I hope his story doesn’t get swept under the rug like the first.
as we discuss the circumstances that can lead to acts of protest such as self-immolation, let us not forget that many gazans (such as ehab abu nada and fathi harb) in years past have also self immolated in protest of the israeli blockade on gaza. this has also been a form of protest among palestinians in the occupied west bank as well.
