Apparently, according to all the people who were upset that we dared to call out Hideo Kojima and implied that his use of Quiet in promotional materials was objectification and pandering, you can also act like it’s totally subversive by writing a long back story for the character.

It doesn’t have to be, or really their own back story, or one that the majority of players will even experience - just so long as there’s something there to claim that you “totally humanized and made worthwhile” the character who’s boobs appear in every promo post.

Then it becomes a deep commentary of the “reality of women in these situations”… there being so many women who run around in bikinis on battlefields in reality.

And wonder once again how exactly does displaying a conventionally attractive heroine’s tits and supermodel strut  equally as much as her weapons and battle prowess count automatically as female empowerment and not thinly-veiled pandering to cishet men.

OH MY GOODNESS I SAW THIS ON TWITTER AND I WAS LIKE “OH NO…. DUDE… DUDE NO”

this plant is, in fact, a cattail (Typha genus, probably either Typha latifolia or Typha angustifolia). what’s ironic about this person’s encounter is that almost every single part of the cattail is edible– the rhizomes are starchy and, although tough, can be made into a nutritious flour; the stems can be peeled and used like asparagus; the pollen can be gathered and used to extend or supplement flour; and even the green flower spikes can be boiled and eaten like corn-on-the-cob, so this person sort of had the right idea.

the thing is, what this person has in their photo is a BROWN flower spike, meaning that it’s starting to go to seed and is probably a tasteless mouthful of either fiber or fluff. regardless of whether the post is a joke or serious, out of all the edible parts of the cattail, op managed to pick one of the ONLY parts of the plant that isn’t. and i still can’t get over that.

As a side note, rubbing that part of the plant makes an absolutely ridiculous amount of fluff come out (which is how it disperses the seeds). I highly recommend it but it’s probably best to do that when no one else is around

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this (blame not sleeping all night) - her story is already in development as a film. Daisy Ridley (Rey from Star Wars) is set to play Virginia. More here.

This movie has been in various states of development for like a decade, but I think it’s got incredibly good odds of being in the current development climate.

And while we’re here, have a cute picture of Virginia and Paul (he’s the one on the right). The other two pictured are OSS reinforcements who came in along with Paul, but neither stuck around very long - so I relegated their presence in the story to a footnote.
