I sometimes think people in the All For The Game fandom misunderstand what an unreliable narrator means. An unreliable narrator is someone who lies to the reader. Who misconstrueds the reader. Whose credibility is compromised. That’s not Neil Josten. For the most part he’s rather truthful TO US! Just because he is a liar to the people around him, doesn’t mean he’s unreliable narrator. He’s just unreliable to the foxes

Jeremy on the other hand is more unreliable. He doesn’t tell much to the audience/reader. Because he’s lying to himself and because of how the books are written, it also means he’s lying TO US.

His stomach revolting against a bad meal at an inconvenient time: “You're fine, Lucas, keep walking,” nails digging into his arm, dragging him down the crowded street.

Dark circles under her eyes after a shaky night: “I'm fine, Abram, practice your French,” sipping her coffee like he can't see her bloody cuticles.

And Neil has always been a fast learner. “I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine,” his litany walking away from a burning car, alone for the first time in his life.

I’m fine through it all, until Andrew takes the words from him and refuses to give them back. Then Neil has to face the truth, and learn to bear it.

Now thinking about who taught Mary to be fine.

Is it a family heirloom they've been passing down one generation to the next for ages until Neil breaks the cycle? Did Mary have a mother who held her shoulders back from their hunch, whispered in her year, "You're fine, Mary, behave yourself" when introduced to her future husband? "You will be just fine Mary, don't make a scene" when they're packing her bags to send her to another continent?

Or did Mary have to learn to be fine all by herself? Alone on the other side of the ocean from her real home, stuck with an abusive husband and his minions in a big empty house? On the run with her son, knowing they'd be running forever or until they were caught?

Did she learn the importance of being fine for her son? "Just do as she says, you will be fine" hiding her own trepidation when Lola drags him to the basement, knives in hand and dangerous smile on her face? "It's just an Exy game, Abram, it will be fine" knowing full well it isn't? "You're fine, I'm fine" all the time on the run, trying to shelter him from the worst of it she herself cannot escape, trying to be strong for him when everything seems hopeless?

ngl it’s so crazy to me that some people think andrew choking kevin was out of character for him. there’s plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise, but the scene where he goes after allison in particular shows that when andrew’s promises conflict with one another, (ex. aaron vs neil), he prioritizes the one that he deems most pressing in that moment. what’s more, if someone stands in the way of andrew’s efforts to protect someone, he will always, ALWAYS, escalate. it’s a knee-jerk reaction. it’s tunnel-vision. choking kevin was not a premeditated decision to hurt someone he cares about, it was a goal-oriented response to the fact what neil was in danger. i’m not saying that characters cannot be poorly written, but as @andrewminyard-josten has articulated before, it’s really crazy to refer to the CANON CHARACTER as ooc because he doesn’t match your perception of him.

However, in this one Jean takes Nathaniel’s number, ‘3’, a lucky number symbolising stability and abundance. And he lives.

Neil would be marked with ‘4’, marked for death, but Lola burned it off. And he survives.
