I'm like 3 years late to this discourse, but I saw the tour of The Great Gatsby musical, and well... of course it was bad at best and boring at worst. But somehow, even worse than all of that, is the hand of greed reaching out so desperately towards the audience the entire time. Not from any of the flat characters (which I guess would make sense, though I haven't read the book since high school), but from the ghost of the creative team.

Of course, stuff like Mean Girls and Back to the Future are an attempt at this as well, but at least they were always destined to be slop from the jump, and they know on some level they're just there for people not to think and maybe mindlessly laugh at.

A Great Gatsby musical doesn't have to be bad. In fact, if rumors are true, Florence Welch might have even written a good one. The score and script of this one somehow manages to be emptier than a Frank Wildhorn show.

It's worse than bad, it's nothing.

if you think for even just a second how fucking crazy bonkers it is that women are so frequently kept from being protagonists or important or fully realized characters when its like. That is literally 50% of the world population. Half of all people (more or less. hopefully more as time marches on!) are women. And you look at media and think about how many protagonists are men and their best friends are men and the ensemble cast is 80-100% men and the fandoms are about men and the romances are about men. well. YOU GO INSANE
