Was trying to make a joke about TV writing to my friend the other day and had to pause and go "...does the phrase 'surf dracula' mean anything to you?"
One of the most important critical texts of this century imo
image description: tweet by @/topherflorence, reading: back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the finale /end description
This isn't much of an ask, but I'm the guy who made the disco ball enterprise, and I thought I'd mention a possible solution to your tilted enterprise problem you mentioned in your tags :)
While the weighted method that you mentioned could and would work, I think an easier method would likely be to attach fishing line/clear string to the propulsion units and have it meet the top of the existing hanging string. It would triangulate the center of gravity between multiple sections and shouldn't impact the visual look of the ornament like weights would.
I'm hoping to make a tutorial for making a disco ball Enterprise sometime soon, and I'll try to troubleshoot this exact issue while I'm working on it!
P.S. here's a diagram showing what I attempted to describe. Hope this helps ā¤ļø
Omg hi!!
Thank you for offering a solution to my problem! I really think that youāre on to something here, this could really up my trek-tree game this holiday season
I really like your disco ball enterprise. Thereās something about The combination of 60s trek and 60s disco thatās very appealing to me. It kinda rhymes, yknow?
I forgot to eat dinner so I'm having 11 pm corn on the cob. This counts as a meal
... It's possible that I really need to do some grocery shopping
Okay for those of you living in pitiful ignorance, take a raw ear of corn with the husk on and cut all the way around the base (as pictured: above the point where the husk meets the cob, so that the entire husk is severed but still wrapped around the corn. Do not cut through the cob.) Then, with the husk still on, microwave it for 5-7 minutes. It'll basically steam it inside the husk. Remove from microwave --it will be hot, so use a mitt or a towel--and firmly pull the top of the husk/silk, which should come off easily in one piece, unsheathing a flawless corn on the cob. If it doesn't, you probably need to cut a little higher around the base, so all the leaves are severed. No picking off silk!
For the nonbelievers (and for me, a second corn)

Every clip youāve posted of black butler seems like itās from a parody of black butler Iām kinda losing my mind
its literally so bad its good
Hes 13 actually so he's a teenager, you can make fun of him
Havenāt posted about plastic in a minute. Rest assured, I am still hard at work eating all plastic on earth

"Mario Mario" is an anachronism. He and his brother were only ever referred to by mononyms in their lifetime, like most residents of the Mushroom Kingdom at the time - multi-part names were typically reserved for members of the Toadstool dynasty, and even these were more like titles or Roman cognomina than what we would call a surname today. His putative ennoblement as founder of the "House of Mario" came centuries later as the collapsing feudal order sought additional sources of legitimacy
#mushroom kingdom folklore says that he sleeps beneath a warp pipe to arise in the time of the kingdom's greatest need #he's definitely shown up a few times but it's hard to tell if he has risen from the dead or is just in the middle of some time travel shit #historians hate him.

Rewatching ATLA and I just can't stop wondering, how come this mf still has a fully functioning brain after this much head trauma?

Murderbot in Network Effect is so funny. Itās like āmy friend is dead this is the WORST and LIFE IS PAINā and then rescues ART and immediately pivots to āI canāt BELIEVE you kidnapped me and dragged me out here just to save your useless fucking life, I hate you.ā
Network Effect packed a lot of punches into one book, honestly.
First, my friend is dead, then my friend is alive, then it turns out it kidnapped me, and then finally, it was ready to bomb a planet to get me back. And now I want to keep working with it.
Itās a lot.
Donāt forget the part where they temporarily have a baby together.
Amena telling MB its plan is to make a baby with ART cracked me up so hard.
Murderbot: so hereās my plan ART & I make a copy of me & edit its code a bitā¦
Amena: like having a baby
Murderbot: wtf? no??? itās just a copy of me!
I love later when both ART and MB have separate conversations with MB2.0 and both come out like āIām feeling pretty bad about this plan now actuallyā and 2.0 is just like āshouldāve thought of that before you created me, letās go kill.ā
"Why do you need age verification on a site where everyone is 38?"
idk who on earth could possibly need to hear this, but do NOT, under ANY circumstances, give out your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER to ANY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
āļøāļøāļø
Bluesky's age assurance sucks, here's how to work around it. - bluesky-osa.md
Ublock Origin filter gets around it. VPNS at the moment get around it too.
Oh hey, and if you don't already know, the reason you're not supposed to give anyone your Social Security Number (SSN) is because anyone who your SSN can impersonate you on a Lot of government and financial documents
Your Social Security number is the key. Originally, your Social Security number (SSN) was a way for the government to track your earnings an
Originally, your Social Security number (SSN) was a way for the government to track your earnings and pay you retirement benefits. But over the years, it has become much more than that. It is the key to a lot of your personal information. With your name and SSN, an identity thief could open new credit and bank accounts, rent an apartment, or even get a job.
-via the California Department of Justice (but this applies to everywhere in the United States, not just California), accessed July 2026
Anyway the answer to "who could possibly need to hear this" is "anyone who doesn't know / remember what a social security number is," which is one reason a lot of scams and identity theft specifically target immigrants and old people
Been having a lot of thoughts about the purpose of mandatory math education, about what kids and teens should be learning from math class. Mulling it over for the past few weeks
I think it's helpful to think of math as a form of literacy: kids need to learn math because when they become adults people will be making arguments to them either using logical reasoning or numerical evidence and sometimes those arguments are in good faith and sometimes the arguments are complete bull. Students should learn enough math so that they can tell when sometimes trying to lie to them with numbers. Relatedly, kids would learn enough math so that when they're adults they can advocate for themselves and back it up with numbers.
Same thing as regular literacy: if someone's not literate, they're dependant on what people tell them that a contract says, they can't read it and know for themself which puts them at risk. They can't see a claim and go do research to find out for themself, they can't advocate for themself and back it up with evidence. This is why literacy is so damned important.
I think math is the same way. If you can't understand the numbers on a car loan, you're at the mercy of whoever explains it to you. If you can't understand the basics of polling or of statistics, then you can't figure out when people (scammers, scummu politicians, anyone) are using that to feed you bullshit. If you can't take a bunch of numbers and put them into a table and look at trends and explain why those trends mean something, then you can't argue to your boss with evidence why you need a pay raise, or to your landlord that they are overcharging you, etc.
I think that's why learning math is important. That's why it's bad when kids don't learn math.
There's a bunch of other things that i think would be good if they got it from math class, like an appreciation for numbers and learning proofs and enough math to go into sciences.
But if the point of math class was learning algorithms and computations - or even if the point of was proofs and the stuff mathematicians do and learning to find the beauty in patterns! - then math should be an elective.
Because when prime company that they're never going to need to solve a quadratic equation or find the derivative of a function in real life, then (with the small exception of kids who go on to be scientists or mathematicias or theoretical computer scientists) they're right. That's not the point.
But everyone needs to be able to tell when a politician is lying to them.
