“There is nothing more interesting than observing a person in the process of choosing themselves: their identity, their bonds and their relationships with those closest to them. Family is a battlefield where one discovers oneself through relationships. It is difficult to imagine a setting more revealing than that.
Within the family, a person becomes exposed and reveals who they truly are: not a guest at a party, nor someone presenting themselves in the most favorable light. At home, we have no choice but to be vulnerable and naked, both literally and metaphorically. That is why I am attracted to exploring what happens to people within the most essential sphere of their lives.”
Andrey Zvyagintsev, 2026 Cannes Film Festival

"Tenderness is the new punk for me. I need to believe that we can see the other. I need to believe that there is a sense of reconciliation, that polarization, anger and machismo isn't the only way forward here". Joachim Trier
The real strength is softness. It’s love, care and the courage to be kind.

When you emerge from the dark night of the soul, you will find that something is always taken away for the better: your beliefs, your former purpose in life or even your ego identity. No being can reach a higher level of nature without ceasing to exist at the previous one.
Have you ever watched a butterfly begin to emerge from its cocoon? It must struggle to strengthen its wings. If someone prematurely frees the butterfly from the cocoon, it will not be able to fly because its crucial hardening stage will be incomplete. The same principle applies to trees: they need wind to strengthen their structure and remain upright.
Your dark night of the soul is your wind and your cocoon.
Thomas Moore | Dark Night Of the Soul

The essence of a true leader
Key characteristics:
a leader innovates/develops
a leader challenges the status quo
a leader is an original/originates
a leader focuses on people
a leader inspires trust
a leader has a long-range perspective
a leader asks “what” and “why”
a leader does the right thing
Daniel Ek, the co-founder and CEO of Spotify, is a classic example of a Nordic leader.
Daniel Ek transformed the music industry by developing Spotify, a platform that offered a legal and user-friendly alternative to piracy. He used technology to innovate the way people access music.
He challenged the music industry's traditional business model, which was failing due to piracy and outdated distribution channels. His vision pushed record labels to adopt streaming, a radical shift at the time.
Ek didn’t follow the conventional path (e.g. he dropped out of university after 8 weeks, rejected traditional employment like Google). He started his first company at 14 and sold it at 23.
His platform was built with both users and artists in mind. He cared about making music accessible for listeners while ensuring fair compensation for creators, showing a strong people-first philosophy.
Daniel Ek gained the trust of major music labels, investors and a global user base, despite the high-risk nature of his idea. He presented a vision that others could believe in and support.
Instead of selling Spotify early, Ek focused on the long-term potential of changing how the world listens to music. He invested in slow, sustainable growth, alike Nordic leadership values.
Ek looked beyond surface problems. For example, he realized the issue with piracy wasn’t that people didn’t want to pay, it was about lack of access. That insight became the foundation of Spotify’s mission.
Rather than exploiting piracy or short-term gains, Ek built a platform that balanced profit with ethics, helping reduce illegal downloading and support the creative economy.
Daniel Ek is a true classic leader because
he innovates with purpose
questions norms
puts people at the center
builds trust through vision and actions
thinks long-term
makes decisions based on values

The essence of a true manager
Key characteristics:
master the science of planning, organizing and controlling resources to achieve defined outcomes
administer and maintain teams, workflows and resources for consistent performance
focus on short-term goals like budgets, timelines and quarterly results
prioritize processes and systems to ensure quality, compliance and efficiency
execute with efficiency, consistency and order
apply proven strategies for stability and predictability
rely on control to minimize risk and ensure accountability
manage complexity with structured thinking
ask “how” and “when” to turn vision into actionable steps
do things right by following best practices and policies
understand the inner workings of an organization: they run it, but do not define the vision
Helena Helmersson, Former Chief Executive, H&M Group is a classic example of a Nordic manager: calm under pressure, quietly competent, ethically grounded and focused on operational reality. She did not set revolutions in motion but made sure the system worked through them. In an era of chaos, she stood not as a bold visionary but as a steady hand.
What makes her so?
She mastered planning and control, especially during crises. Just six weeks into her role as CEO, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. H&M’s stock dropped by 50%, and most physical stores had to close. Yet under her management, H&M quickly prioritized online sales, accelerated digital investments and restored performance.
Helmersson led H&M through not only a global pandemic, but also a major political and reputational crisis in China. When H&M’s statement on forced labor allegations in Xinjiang caused a national boycott and a 23% drop in sales in Q2 2021, she didn’t react impulsively. Instead, she handled it like a manager: by entering private dialogue with officials, improving supply chain transparency and implementing due diligence processes.
Her ability to cope with complexity: she managed one of the world’s largest fashion companies through a series of global shocks.
She consistently asked “how” and “when”, turning challenges into operational actions: how to shift online, when to act publicly, how to respond to regulators and how to implement values like sustainability into real workflows.
Above all, she did things right: her leadership was never about attention or headlines , it was about functioning, adjusting and preserving trust across markets, governments and consumers.
