Games That Don’t Exist But Need To: #2
Wacky Races - A Download Only Kart Racer, featuring Online Multiplayer
I guess this segment should be called "Games That Don't Exist on Current Gen Consoles But Need To" but that would be too much of a mouthful :P
Essentially Wacky Races has existed in game form before, most notably on PS2 in a few different forms. These games were of variably quality and success. I still think that a Wacky Races game needs to be made that truly reflects the mania of the TV Series.
Wacky Races as a game would be an interesting Kart Racer, and perhaps only truly suitable as a downloadable title. I say this due to the limitations of the game, I feel character and vehicle customisation for example would be a big no no. A lack of customisation would push it out of the same league as Mario Kart, Modnation Racers and the upcoming Little Big Planet Karting, therefore making it a risky choice for a full blown retail release. Why no character/vehicle customisation you ask? Well because Wacky Races is all about the characters and their vehicles. Take that away with customisation options and you would water down the essence of the original series. The characters need to remain unscathed in order to truly reflect the source material.
So what would the game contain?
Eleven Vehicles each with their own special abilities and their signature drivers at the helm.
I feel that rather than each vehicle being able to pick up the exact same powerups throughout a race that these powerups should instead be tailored to each individual vehicle.
This could be done by randomly selecting powerups after each pick up and designating Weak, Medium and Strong powerups in relation to the racers position in the race in a similar vein to Mario Kart. I'm not suggestion that each character would have only three possible powerups. That was just a small scale to represent the idea of individual similarly powered abilities for each racer. Perhaps a scale of 1 - 10 abilities for each racer. This would allow for different characters to have slightly different advantages and disadvantages throughout play, of course care would have to be taken that one vehicle wasn't over powered.
Some examples of ideas for Powerups:
The Slag Brothers in the Bouldermobile 1 -
Weak Powerup: Hitting nearby cars with clubs, or throwing clubs at further away opponents.
Strong Powerup: Summoning a Pterosaur to aid themselves or hinder opponents.
The Gruesome Twosome in the Creepy Coupe 2 -
Weak Powerup: Sending out Ghosts to block other drivers vision
Strong Powerup: Summoning their Dragon to set fire to all cars behind and in front of them causing them to spin out.
Professor Pat Pending in the Convert-a-Car 3 -
Weak Powerup: Utilising some form of nitrous boost (but with a wackier name)
Strong Powerup: Transforming into a giant bowling ball a la Bullet Bill ;)
I chose my favourite racers :) for the examples, it's just a taster of what could be possible.
Moving onto the race tracks:
I feel some creative licence would have to be taken in order to create interesting and fun tracks to race around, and that here customisation and creation tools could thrive. The tracks in the series were relatively samey and bland, and I feel with the correct tool set provided gamers would be able to create and share tracks in a similar way to Little Big Planet and Modnation Racers.
Graphically the game would have to be as close as possible to that of the original TV series, whether that be cell shading or whatever the latest innovation in cartoon like visuals is :P That is all.
Of course one other important mention is that of voice acting, this would have to be handled carefully. It would have to be implemented in such a way that it would not become too annoying. I guess a large sound-bank would be a way to help with this, but also if possible an awesome addition would be that of an intelligent and awesome Narrator. Of course if it isn't awesome don't put any Narrator commentary in. It has to be awesome. Awesome!
So yeah, there is my view on a game that doesn't truly exist yet. But should.
