Switzerland and Mexico are both great arguments against the "it's da guns!" argument. One is a country with lots of guns but little gun crime The other is a country with a lot of gun control and tons of violence.

I live in Switzerland and heard a radio show explain this once. First of all, Switzerland is TINY compared to America, which people often forget to take into account.

The next reason is a difference in mentality. The Swiss trust their police force to uphold justice, they don't do it themselves. Police themselves are trained in de-escalation as a primary tactic, and being too quick to use violence gets you fired.
