Early in the morning, I rise into the streets, fly the bird up, look around, and head back down to town. Took a last minute trip to visit my grandmother in #elpaso and damn it feels good to be in the #desert cool, dry, thin air in the morning and clear skies all day. It would have been easy to skip visiting grandma but when opportunity presents itself, seize it! Don’t forget the people that turned us into the person we are today. El Paso knows all about this. Burdened immigration controversy and shootings the city has come together and is stronger than ever. “First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the woman” -Scarface I’m feeling nostalgic and grateful. For the first time in two years after starting the pursuit of film making as a career/life; it seems possible to make a living doing it. 6 months ago Liz Landers (and her big heart) invited me to work in the Hollywood South (New Orleans), doing craft service; basically making sure the film crew is hydrated, fed, and happy (check out the giant snowball). Then, to my surprise, it paid union wages... I grew up in Texas where 100 degree days in the oil field are the only real way to make a living. However, It just so turns out that Film Makers work the same hours and get paid the same as rough necks, we just finish the day a little cleaner... After 6 months in Louisiana I returned to Texas flew a drone, made some more great friends, then stopped at my dads to take a week off. For the first time in two years I had enough time and money to stop, not think about work and enjoy the good things in life. What I’m trying to say is that If you have dream which seems possible, then pursue it, work for nothing, make friends, refine your craft, and at some point it will pay you back. Several months ago I volunteered to run sound on a friends short film for free. In fact it was 4/20, Kylie and I (pictured) had already put in a 70 hour week, but did it in spite of the need to rest. After 14 hours of shooting I left thinking “ok, it’s over with, good deed done”. Then 2 months later on the show I consider work (because it pays); the lead actress from that weekend shows up playing a role in the big leagues. The lesson here is always make friends along the way, never let an opportunity pass, and never underestimate the power of good karma to come around and pat you on the back months or even years later. Real Talk, I love #summer but the afternoon stretch from noon to five is hard to deal with... Animals go sleep in the shade, many countries in the world shutdown for a #siesta and the argument has been made that our ability to make #ice civilized the world. It has not been easy to admit a dislike for any part of my favorite season but I’m proposing a new schedule. We work in the evenings, nights and mornings leaving the hottest part of the day to bake our solar panels as we #nap and prepare for the beautiful light of sunset, sunrise and clear night skies. The people I’ve met in the film world are a good bunch, we work 15 hour days and smile about it. Sometimes we make union wages (which are good) and sometimes nothing; yet do the same job either way. It seems like an easy job, pic a great story, and film it? Challenging and inspiring yes, easy no. Watching and creating are two very different paths. Watching should feel like living through a great moment but creating is a job that takes days or weeks or months or years and a script and people and equipment to turn that idea into a reality. When you say “I have a great idea for a movie” it should be worthy of putting your life savings into; if not, its back to the drawing board. After two years of searching, I’ve found out that making movies is actually a real job, because it takes 100’s of people to turn one man or woman’s dream into a reality. And, Thanks to the internet those of us making films or wanting to (embracing the next generation) it’s not going anywhere. If you don’t believe me watch @steven.speilberg #readyplayerone we’re all going to live in multistory mobile homes and get satisfaction from virtual reality. When I started flying a #drone at some point, everyday I would get it up in the air. Practice makes perfect, it’s true but ego took over and this morning was only the second time I’ve flown the #mavic2pro In two months. It felt like dancing with two left feet. Starting a new journey working #craftservices in New Orleans. Of all the jobs on a film set this might be the most challenging. I’ve always been on the production side where the goal is to get setup and get the shot! Now, instead of completing a job it’s about keeping the crew happy. Its a Service for the Craftsman or Craftswoman. Once again I’m stepping into the unknown; but know that hard work and a positive attitude will get the job done!
