MUTATE || OPEN
The screeching sound of the casterâs voice caused the mutant to cringe. His entire body flexed with the unpleasant pull of the intercom. He dared to even say it annoyed him to a point of wanting to smash the nearest one but the scene would likely solicit a crowds of startled overseers and reacting teens that could possibly turn out to be detrimental to the boy and his guests. The shifting had increased over the last week and this time, it was more consistent. He could feel the difference in his physiological requirement and need. And currently, he was watching the world through an inverted perspective- the ceiling. The last wave of patrolling staff and their flock passed him. Once the coast was clear, his camouflage disengaged. Letting his feet release first, he braced for landing. Vic dropped, crouching down as he silenced the weight of the fall. By doing so, he reduced the likelihood of being heard and subsequently being seen. He arched his back as he stood on his toes and began to sprint for an exit. He let claws protract incase he needed to slice through. With a slight psychological adaption with all the shifts, he wasnât his complete self. Vic fought between what he believed was right and the rise in hormones. As it were, reptiles had a higher level of testosterone and he was currently struggling with those fluctuations.Â
"I can smell fresh air.â He snatched the IV catheter out of his right arm. He didnât need any chances to get snagged.

Tommy waited silently while Victor got his confession out. Respecting the other as he worked through his confession. When the other finally got it out Tommy couldnât help but let out a small laugh. It wasnât cruel though, it was quiet and soft and relieved, accompanied by a warm smile that spread across his face. âVictor, my own twin brother is gay.â With the ease that Billy had handed out that information to Tommy when they had first met, the speedster would have thought things had changed more in the decade heâd been locked away. Tommy was just starting to think Billy had hit some sort of life lottery. âEven Iâm.. ya know,â he trailed of because didnât actually know the word to describe what he was, but he rocked his hand back and forth slowly to indicate he was so-so, something in-between gay and straight. âAnd in case that doesnât make it clear enough. I would never hate you for being gay.â Tommy had been through so much pain in his life because of being hated for what he was. For a factor of himself that he could not change if he wanted to, how could Tommy hate someone else for something they couldnât change either.
Vic didnât know what to make of the laughter. In fact, he solidified his cloak. He remained hidden for the duration of their encounter only to see himself sink further into a hunch. He couldâve bursted into tears by which even Tommy indicated otherwise. It was an adverse reaction that made him stumble. It was like he was stunned. His eyes roamed his lap before adverting to Tommy. Slowly, he came into view but it all started at his feet and worked upwards. âI, uh...â He chimed, trying together the right words and the proper response for Tommy. âI know, but...sometimes...you never really know how people would react.â Tommy, to Billy, was one of the cooler kids. He respected him and he slowly built a crush on the guy. But, that wasn't something he was willing to admit, even if he was gushing normally in his presence. He smiled at Tommy and that was the most reassuring thing he couldâve given him. A tear or two dropped but he quickly shielded his eyes to wipe at them with his sleeve. He atleast had one friend who really liked him still. So, Tommy would be there through it all...and Vic was grateful. He needed friends like this. âBut no matter what, Tommy, youâre awesome. Someone will accept you for that. And if theyâve got a problem, Iâll support you always.âÂ
fastrthanyou:
âI do like you, Vic,â he corrected the other with noticeable confusion in his voice. He couldnât wrap his head around why the other was acting so strange. At first Tommy wondered if he had gone to far when heâd touched the other. Tommy would have been more than able to understand that, most of the time he was fairly touch averse himself, but then Victor leaned into him and that but him back at square one. âItâs alright,â he said gently when the other sat back up. Tommyâs brow furrowed as Victor continued to speak, trying to figure out exactly what the other could mean. Tommy knew could be a pretty rude guy sometimes without even realizing it. He tried to rack his for a time he may have brushed off an interest or aspect of Victor carelessly but he couldnât think of anything. Let alone anything that would have left Victor with the impression Tommy would hate him for it. âVic I know I can be an ass but there really arenât a lot of things I truly hate in this world. So what ever it is you can tell me.â He reached out, taking hold of the otherâs hand. âYou can trust me Victor, I swear.â
âLike me...like...what?â Vic was curious a moment, looking up and over at the speedster, worried someone might see Tommy and he worried more about how the other would come off than himself. It was a moment that he was more curious as to what Tommy had to say than his own confession and that made his heart sink even more. You know, the feeling when it feels like a heavy guttural emotion when your mind is going slower than your heart? Yeah, Vic was in that moment presently. âI...â He made eye contact. âThereâs another secret. Iâve been dealing with it in private. Mister Beaubier is helping me out.â If that wasnât context enough. âSome of the other staff has been trying to help me transition into these phases and...â He felt as if he could cry, he was so emotional. He just knew Tommy was going to hate him. But then, there was the hand-holding. His eyes welled, drifting down to his warm palm and his thumb felt out knuckles. It mate him feel...nervous. âIâm...â He huffed heavily as he let his eyes fall to his lap and his lips pushed forward. Slowly his body began to camouflage with their entire surrounding, including his face. Only thing remaining were his clothing. âgay.â He swallowed heavily and he knew instantly Tommy would forever dislike him and wish heâd never met him. At least, that was his past experience. His friends all become tighter while he was on the outs for rumor. He swallowed hard as he took his sleeves and brushed his eyes. No crying, Vic.Â
fastrthanyou:
That word choice seemed odd to Tommy, even if he couldnât quite place why. âI.. appreciate you too,â he responded, followed by a soft laugh. âAlright.â Tommy wasnât going to fight him anymore than that. At The end of the day it was Victorâs choice, and at least the other boy had heard him out. âWell if you ever want someone to keep you company while youâre still hiding from the general public, you know where to find me.â He gave the other a big grin and, in an uncharacteristic display of physical affection, wrapped an arm around Vicâs shoulder. âIâve seen some pretty convincing Godzilla look a likes in my day. So Iâd really like to see you try and scare me off.â
Insert plenty of expletives, here. Vic looked over at him as he nipped on his bottom lip out of nervousness. His hand gripped the box and before he knew it, the candy had been compressed against the sides. âIâll...um...oo. Is it getting hot out?â His eyes surfed every where, drawing into long gazes in every other direction besides. He found himself falling into Tommyâs side and confusion struck him. He quickly looked for the cause before noticing he was right upon him. Vic was quiet. Strangely. Vic was never quiet. His hands plucked at the paper until he freed the candy. âWell...â He stuffed his mouth with the wad of fruit chews. âI am glad you like...I mean...you want m-to be around me.â He cleared his throat before his eyes began to shift. They were now a brilliant grey with hues of green. Slits were now his pupils and he shook his head, hiding his face. âOne sec.â He had to lean into Tommy more. âI...sorry.â He sat up. âYouâve know me for a little bit and Iâve been struggling with something. You probably will hate me for it. I just donât really know how to say it or how to tell you...âÂ

fastrthanyou:
âI donât think being a freak is necessarily a bad thing,â that was a good place to start. Tommy was well acquainted though with the way other people used the word, heâd had it turned against him so many times that there was no escaping the fact that it was associated in his mind with him, with what he was. He might as well take it on with pride at this point, there was nothing else he could do. âI could hurt people too. If I accidentally move to fast when Iâm inside I could end up destroying a whole wing of the school. That doesnât mean I belong immobilized at all times.â Tommy noticed the otherâs slip of the tongue, but he decided to ignore it. âYouâre a good guy Vic. I donât think that would change no matter how big or scaley you got.â
Vic avoided eye contact. The last thing he needed was for Tommy to see him a bit off his block and to see him off guard. At any point in time, he could blush. But that was if he wasnât trying to portray being a bad ass and if he wasnât the most talented actor in the Theatre Department. He inhaled slowly as he finally looked over at him and he couldnât quite give him a response. He simply nodded. He was confident, to boot. And now the speedster was paying him compliment and reassuring him? Well, damn. What wasnât to crush on. He cleared his throat before sticking a few more pieces of candy into his mouth and broke silence. âI appreciate you, dude.â He finally smiled before his shook his head. âBut, I have to be safe and I have to be sure. I need to come to grips with this without the pressures of fitting in or scaring someone.â Vic nudged him with his shoulder and looked off in the distance.Â
fastrthanyou:
âSorry! Sorry!â He handed the box back over willingly. âI didnât see! I was too focused on talking to you, dweeb lord.â He also handed his own box over without complaint. Victor was the one paying for all this stuff anyway, Tommy didnât have room to be bossy. âYou do know we are at freak school, for freaks, right?â Spikes and claws all sounded like pretty standard mutant fare to Tommy, and McCoy was nothing to some of the guys heâd seen back in the facilities. âThey really do that here?â He didnât like the idea of anyone being forcefully isolated, it made him feel a little queasy. âAre you at least out for the foreseeable future?â
Vic was caught mid chew without a response. Could someone be too focused? Even he couldnât be caught too focused. If there was a theme for internal screaming, it would be him but he played it cool. âWeâre arenât freaks, Tommy. Itâs offensive. Weâre different. Unique even. People fight for our rights every day and they fight for us to be one aspect of being different.â Vic had so much passion that he was talking from a reference of more than just mutants. âThey did it because I was scared. I am scared. My life is changing faster than before. Itâs hard to adjust. One minute Iâm like this and the next I feel like I am Swamp Thing crossed with a big snake.â He huffed. âIâm out now but who knows. I might need to seek isolation. I am scared  I might hurt someone, Tommy. Iâd hate to hurt y--I mean, people.â He scratched his neck, awkwardly looking down the field. âDonât worry. All these things are voluntary.âÂ
fastrthanyou:
âSame old, same old,â that was his way of saying not great, but at least things hadnât gotten worse. âThey made me spend a week in the infirmary, and I broke my damn arm too.â He held up his cast for Victor to see. Once Victor got a few of the candies Tommy snagged the box for himself, dumping half of it right into his mouth. âWhatta âbout you, mistah disappearinâ act?â He asked while he chewed, mouth mostly full of candy.
Mentioning the infirmary had him initially quiet until he let out an awkward laugh. His eyes widened until his face was tucking into his own bag of goodies. âEh!â He chimed, snatching the box back. He made a pouty face and pointed at the big ass yellow box sticking out of Tommyâs brown sack. âNow you owe me half of yours.â He sighed as he sat back. âWell, Iâve been dealing with my mutation. Trying not to be the resident freak. They had me isolated. It got intense for a moment. The kind of crap we see in horror flicks. I mean...spikes and claws. We thought Mr. McCoy was beastly. Heh.â He looked the box and shook the candy loose from one corner. He began to nibble on a few pieces. âI didnât want to but...They kept me away from everyone. They ran blood tests and everything.âÂ
fastrthanyou:
âHey,â he repeated back to the other, a smile on his face. A lot of people at the school had decided to avoid his as of late. He couldnât blame the ones who did, but it made the ones who still hung out with him all the more special. âCandy?â His eyes lit up like a small childâs would when Victor started listing the sweets he had. He couldnât help himself, beneath all the trauma and the tough guy attitude was still a little boy whoâd never really gotten to grow up. âLetâs start with the Jujyfruits.â
It was nice to have a friend. Atleast one really good one that didnât really make things difficult. Everyday was a challenge and it wasnât the first time that he resorted to bribing himself, and others, with sweet confections. Each of their bags had an equal distribution and since the guy in-town liked the kid a bit, he made it easy on the mutant. While he wasnât technically allowed to leave without a chaperone or a mentor, he snuck away when it was calm. Easiest perk of having camo. Within his own bag, Vic pulled out the bright yellow box and flashed it over to Tommy before opening what was like a momentary whiff of heaven of goodness. The fruity scents made him smile as he shoved a few pieces. âSo whatâs been up? It feels like Iâve been in isolation for a bit. Howâs the mental?âÂ
Pain. Thatâs the current set of stimulants that coursed his body like he was probed by one of hordes from The Twilight Zone. He took a long, deep, and steady inhale as he tried to anchor himself in something other than his present irritations. Thankful, bruised and beastly knuckles had been healed over by normal looking skin. Again, thankfully. He had some sense of normalcy and he could blend in. It was hard. Heavy, even. Dealing with becoming what most of the kids called The Lochness. It was stupid but it got to him. Thatâs why he was in the predicament in the first place. It was tiring fighting but he had part of the aggressive nature to blame on the mutation.
Vic passed several of his friends in the hall. They were from dance. It was an activity he learned to love aside from wrestling. It helped keep him poise and graceful. Flexible even. But, he hid it. It wasnât considered masculine. And that was another thing he wasnât trying to defend all the time. Dare he repeat how tired heâd become. His eyes drifted over several of the kids out on the lawn and there he saw that platinum headed guy. A friendly acquaintance. A crush. No. Scratch that. He wasnât about to admit it. He tucked his book under his arm and carried the two bags. Okay. Maybe he had a little crush but there was no way this one was his type of tree to bark at. He seemed too. Nevermind.
âHey,â Vic blurted as he found the seat on the grass next to him. He offered the paper bag of goodies. He heard rumor of what happened but he was busy dealing with his own battles with his body. âBrought some snack from town. Said the Big League Chew and Bazooka Gum was fresh stock. Gave me five packs of Pixy Sticks and two boxes of Jujyfruits.â He plopped the bag between his legs. His shorts riding up and his long socks made up the difference. âWho better to share it with than my bud.â
