I'll talk about history if someone asks, but for now I'm too scared of not knowing what level of knowledge I can assume, so I don't really start on my own. But let me ramble, if you're ready.
Sometimes I wish I was the type of gal who could make a ship playlist. But well, I have exactly one song I see as just them, and even that is more of a "this is a perfect relationship dynamic regardless" than their particular deal.
I guess all I have is hoping that some other creative will see what I'm putting down and pick it up
Spearmint may be straight passing, but neither of these dumbasses has straight cell in their body hah. I'm still not sure what flavor of not straight/not cis are they. Your thoughts guys?
Other than M'gann being trans, I may not be doing too good writing it, because it's not my story to tell, but it has special place in my heart
Danny is bi disaster I think. Maybe demiromantic? Like, he'll find people instantly hot in sexual way, but for romantic attraction to be there, he needs time. Does it make sense.
M'gann on the other hand, whenever faced with human that makes her brain do things, is faced with question "What exactly am I feeling?" and answer usually feels like:
They both point out people that they think other may like to see when together in public, like "hey, pretty person on tenth". Also, mutual psychological wars of "HEY! MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND THINKS YOU'RE HOT!!!"
What people think why i became a bookbinder: Oh she wants to explore her artistic horizon with those pretty leather bound books of hers. She even gives them out as gifts to her friends. It most likely helps her with anxiety or maybe she just wanted a more special costume made notebook.
Why I actually became a bookbinder: I just illegally downloaded and printed out several of my favourite fanfics and books and started binding them into books cuz I love reading them but looking at screens for too long gives me headaches.
Okay, so, it's pride month! Yay! It would be neat to make something for that and if I've been capable of forward thinking, I'd probably hold of on sharing turtles and have them ready to go. But I didn't, so now it's up to you. Give me an animal and a flag and I'll do doodle in similar style. There is no wrong flag!
hi :-) ive been lurking a little bit on your blog, and am someone deeply interested in the history (both modern and not so modern) of poland. i was wondering if you have a favorite and/or least favorite part, event, fact, etc? only if you'd like to answer ofc ^_^
Anon, I usually ask people if they're sure they're sure they're ready for the yap session, of course I'd love to answer!
Now, this is really hard question. I can't say I have a part I don't like, but I will say I have certainly love-hate relationship with Romanticism. I think it's mostly a matter of oversaturation and the way everyone higher-up keeps acting as if the way person should be then and now is exactly the same.
Poland now is notably an independent, almost mono-ethnic country. Poland then was taken apart, rather diverse and what consists of our modern understanding of nationality was just forming and wouldn't spread across all classes of society for a long time (in census from either 1921 or 1926 in some places they had to add "local/from here" as a stated nationality, because people just didn't identify with anything beyond their local area). Like, you'd think that Mickiewicz was Polish, right? He wrote in Polish, is considered one of the greatest Polish poets after all. But no, his "Pan Tadeusz", probably his opus magnum, famously starts with the words "Lithuania, my fatherland". Patriotism then, which is a main thing we're supposed to be taking away form all the books, poems and stories we hear from that time, was a game for higher class and educated people, who could afford to think of things like that. Patriotism then is someone fighting hopeless battle for freedom. It's patriotism of war.
However nowadays, we don't need to die for this country. Someone who will live bright and quick and then die beautiful death like a torch or an explosive is not a model of a person that will help us. Patriot of today dutifully pays taxes and stuff like that, participates in local community to help others, is aware enough to make informed choices in elections, doesn't burn plastic in their furnace. It's calmer and more boring, but we live in calmer and more boring times. We can afford and we need a sustained flame to keep going.
And also the idea of one great person who'd fix everything, it's grating on my nerves.
So, mostly it's not even problem with an époque as it is, but mostly framing of it in conversations. At least not fully. As an aroace woman I can and will continue to have a beef with the way love and women were portrayed in things I read form that time (especially Wioletta from "Kordian" by Juliusz Słowacki).
But on the other hand, I love history how the world was changing and honestly, I love heroism. I love people who were in situation that was hopeless and still tried, because alternative was a life where they weren't allowed to be Polish and it was not something worth living. And story of "Boże, coś Polskę" song is fucking hilarious and exactly the reason why I love learning about the past (but it came out slightly before Romanticism here officially started, but it doesn't fit with Enlightenment, so I'm rounding it up there)
Now, to get to the stuff I unambiguously like.
I remember seeing a meme somewhere, that middle aged man will have one of three periods they like the most from history and it's ancient Greece/Rome, (I can't remember that one lol, maybe Napoleon?) and World War II. At the ripe age of twelve, I absolutely identified with it, and it more or less stayed. Of course, no matter what medieval chronicles and some conspiracy theorists say, Greece/Rome is not relevant to the question (but tbh, I need to read more in-depth what Kadłubek and Długosz were on about there, last time I skipped because I wanted to get to Wanda).
One could point out, that WWII is treated similarly to Romanticism in public debate and logically, I should be over it too. Yes, it's true. However, as someone smarter than me said, humans aren't rational creatures, they are rationalizing ones. It's closer to nowadays, so it feels more relevant. When I was growing up, there were buildings in my city that still had bullet holes from the war. My grandparents could tell me stories. It's easier to humanize these people and that time.
And I also grew up reading children's books about it and am a scout, I've been one for over a decade now, and every year for first of August we spent whole day commemorating Warsaw Uprising. So, it's history that's still very close to me. I also recently found my way back to podcast that focuses on it, so there is that.
I also love almost somewhat opposite time, in a sense of lives of pre-Christian Slavic tribes from around here. We don't have much written sources left (they didn't write so everything we have is either from Christian chroniclers, who were not respectful in the slightest or Muslim ones, who did not spit so much vitriol and are considered pretty great sources, but they were still outsiders with limited understanding of the culture so... Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, I still love you) and archeology can only take us so far, but I still love everything I van find about the faith, culture and lives of these people. One of these days I need to get around to another attempt at reading some books I have on it, they turned out a bit too scientific for me on my first go.
(I remember having strong will to write Percy-Jackson-but-Slavic, reading bunch of popularizing books and then realizing that they were just making shit up or mixing in christian elements and I'm not into that lol. Maybe someday)
However, if someone asked me this to my face, I would say that my favorite period is Enlightement/late 18th century.
It's just such a train wreck I can't turn my eyes away form. And I have a sentiment towards Stanisław August Poniatowski, I was his defense lawyer during mock trial in high school. I lost, but on the other hand, out of four times we did it, two times when I was in defense, he survived, so I will say I did pretty well. People were craving blood.
But, to be serious and somewhat less sentimental. Enlightenment in Poland was a time of great changes. Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was in free fall and then king and a group of patriots tried to catch it before it crashed. They introduced enlightened concepts to the people, and as much as we can criticize Enlightenment's concepts ideas and philosophy, it was better than stuff before. They introduced concept of personal responsibility for the country in the noble masses, who had rights to vote and make decisions after all. They revolutionized education, establishing first governmental body to control it - KEN (Komisja Edukacji Narodowej) - so it wasn't just controlled by the Church. They made the situation of townspeople better. In 1791, despite many problems along the way, they managed to pass our first modern Constitution, which maybe wasn't as revolutionary as we would like to pretend it was, but it changed things for the better.
And also, process of getting it in was hilarious. A bit undemocratic, but hilarious none the less.
And don't get me wrong, they were far from perfect. King Poniatowski. had a lot of trouble managing a budget and was so tangled with Katherine the Great, Empress of Russia, that it overrode his decision making abilities. He trusted her when he shouldn't, pinned long after she moved on and all that. He didn't have enough respect from his opponents to make them listen to him even if they didn't want to. This was partially because of his origin and the way he became a king, but also because he wasn't able to command respect.
As mentioned, Constitution of 3rd of May leaves some to be desired. Education was not for everyone. Serfdom stayed being a thing until Prussia, Austro-Hungary and Russia didn't dissolve it later on in 19th century (now, don't take it as glazing, Russians did it only because people from January Uprising made it their talking point and they decide to steal it). They notably didn't manage to save Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from being erased from the maps.
There is this anecdote that when king Poniatowski erected a monument for king Jan III Sobieski, someone left a poem like:
"He cost hundred thousands, I would spent twice this much,
So that Stanisław would turn to stone and Jan the Third came alive"
Which is a sign of general sentiment and I can't say I disagree full stop, but also, idk. I think he was a good king, or at least a decent one. It's just that at the time Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a mess and doomed to fail, and needed someone exceptional.
But still, someone tried and I love them for that.
It's also the time Izabela Czartoryska nee Fleming is from (listen, I know writing her first surname is odd, but we need it, there were four Izabela's in Czartoryski family around that time) and she is one of my favorite people in history. I need to find some biography of hers to get really in depth, but she's such a cool lady. She created first publicly available museum collecting important items from our history (some were copies, but she ran on the assumption, that it's better to have a copy than nothing at all. Big chunk of the collection was destroyed during WWII). There is an anecdote that, since it was time of excessive sexual liberty, that her husband would drop her off at her lovers house (king's palace, because yes, her lover was the king) on his way to his lover. Then later on her husband and the king (yes, her lover) would both try to convince her to seduce someone else, for betterment of the country, which is just so delightfully ridiculous as a concept. And she did it! She wrapped Russian Ambasador Repnin, who had unreasonable amount of power, around her finger so well hearing stories of his devotion is kind of impressive. They had a child, who grew up to be important cog in November Uprising of 1831.
I love history as a collection of stories about people, so stuff like that is right up my alley.
I've been meaning to get around to learn more about most modern history, especially about 80's and 90's, since it wasn't really cared for at school, but that's something for a later date.
I also love history of my city, but whether or not it's relevant to question about Polish history is complicated and either way I don't want to doxx myself, so I won't yap about that.
For all its faults Tumblr has truly ruined all other social media for me because my friends all have Instagram and are all trying to get me on Instagram more but every time I open Instagram there are like fifteen things screaming for my attention and when I get over myself long enough to start scrolling it's like. Where is my chronological dash. Where is the following-only option. Who are these people. Why are there so many videos. Everyone is screaming at me. And then before I know it I'm thirty minutes into scrolling and I haven't seen a single thing that I actually care about. At least on Tumblr when I see stuff I don't care about I know someone I follow has found a new interest.
Regarding Arthurian mythos, why do you think Guinevere as we know her became part of the narrative? Since a version existed but not the one who had the tragic affair with Lancelot
Because she rules (pun intended) and she’s awesome and funny and cool. She is (or perhaps was) a woman as willful and strong as Arthur, demanding and tempestuous but beautiful and intelligent. She was a traitoress before Lancelot entered the picture as her lover. She was slowly rounded out into the platonic ideal of a demure medieval maiden who happened to fall in love with one of her husband’s knights because that is much more comforting to a misogynistic society. 🤷♂️
Every time I pick up a modern Arthurian adaption I’m like “Why is my femdom giantess queen behaving like a good Christian girl from the 1800s and why is Morgan evil? Oh, right. Misogyny.”
They did the same thing to my queen Wanda "who didn't want German man" (character from medieval Polish chronicles and legends, daughter of Krak, guy after whom Cracow is supposed to be named, the one with dragon shebang). I hope you don't mind tangentially related rant, because I went on a dive (wouldn't call it deep dive, but head went underwater I think) so she's always in the back of my mind.
This story includes suicide by jumping on the sword and drowning
In original story from medieval chronicle ("Historia Polonica" by Wincenty Kadłubek), she was ruling queen of Poland chosen for the role by the senat after her father's death. She was described like this:
"She captivated everyone as much with her beauty as with her charm, so much so that one could think that nature, in endowing her, proved not generous but rather extravagant (or wasteful- I have a bit of a hard time choosing which works best); even the wisest were amazed by her ideas, and her fiercest enemies softened at the sight of her."
Based on Polish translation by Alexander Przezdziecki, translation to English by me
Then unnamed German duke attacked, assuming country was "orphaned" after death of Krak (in chronicle he is called Grakchus, because old chronicles were obsessed with Latinizing everything). His aim was to steal stuff. Then Wanda lead the troops to battle and through her incredible beauty and probably some divine intervention, all of the enemies decided that fighting her would be a sacrilege and went back to their boss to say as such. Then the duke/king got pissed, cursed his military leaders into growing old under woman's rule and then jumped on his sword and died. Wanda died of old age.
However, version that everyone and their cat are referencing, even if they don't know it, comes from "Annales seu cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae" by Jan Długosz.
Once again, Wanda is ruling queen, so beautiful and charming and wise and great that none of her subject really dared to force her to get married. Then the German duke, finally with a name Rytogar comes, partially because he wants Poland's riches, partially because he heard that Wanda was so beautiful. So, he asked for her hand in marriage. She said no. He went with an army, but stopped a bit away and sent the question once again. Wanda replied along these lines"
"Does your duke really consider me a woman so vile and unworthy of marriage, that he dares to demand that I looking down upon my kingdoms fame and power, ignoring suffering that he caused and is now still causing to my nation, I allowed the surrender with my kingdom and disrespected the honor of my rule? Tell your duke that I'm disgusted by his offering like every other relationship. It's more appropriate for me to be called the mistress rather than a wife of a ruler. He declared the war - then he shall prepare to war, and realize what a disgrace it is for a duke and a husband to stand aside from the battle lines, to turn away from the fight, to speak of love, and, laying down their arms, to make marriage vows.”
Based on Polish translation by Alexander Przezdziecki, translation to English by me
Then, once again, Wanda lead army, her beauty and divine intervention turned army against Rytogar. However, here comes most famous change, because there at the end Wanda sacrifices herself to the gods, in exchange for successful war, which Christian author saw as noble but misguided.
Then in Renaissance, she often appeared in poems, taking more active role in fighting, actually leading her army to victories, and then sacrificing herself in some calque from Roman traditions I don't quite know. In these poems she was often compared to Camilla from "Eneid".
They put a lot of emphasis on the fact that while she was beautiful woman on the outside, she had "a man's spirit" (enjoys hunting/fighting and is a good ruler). Usually her death is treated as this momentous thing, great sacrifice for her country etc. In all versions (including both chronicles) she was beloved by her people to the point where they build her burial mound in Cracow after her death, similar to her father. There was one guy who was critical of her for the way she died because "she didn't leave a heir!!1!!1!" and he was trying to convince the king at the time to stop mourning his wife and get with another woman and produce the offspring finally, but he is an outlier then and now.
However, if you looked up her story now, there would be no battle. Wanda, when informed about the fact that Rytogar->Rydgier is coming with an army to get her hand, she's distraught and jumps off to drown in Vistula, as a tactic to avoid the bloodshed. In most, they still keep the independence and sovereignty angle, which is nice I guess, even if it's often sort of soft launching xenophobia at unsuspecting kids. But it's not always true. I found a version where she had a child with a guy who died and she refused to marry Rydgier, because she still loved her husband. The woman who found relationships disgusting. There is also a version where she was a teenager and did it to escape arranged marriage, which was arranged by both of her parents (her mother doesn't exist in my chronicles).
Of course, she was not that similar to Guinevere, especially not if we tried to compare how many media they appear in.
It's getting really late around here, so I can't come up with a sensible way to wrap it up. I hope you see what I mean here and I didn't overstep. It was honestly surprising to compare the version I grew up with, to the version she originally was.
I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.
We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.
There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:
A single income isn't enough to get by anymore
Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system
Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly
Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.
So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.

Barry: Okay. Stay here. I'll go check it out. *Picks up bat* If you hear me shout Code 16 use our home invasion plan delta.
Iris: Okay.
Barry walking through the dark house until he sees a light in the kitchen: AH-HA!
Danny eating out of the open fridge: Hmm-whaa!?
Barry: Wait a minute, you're just a kid. What are you doing?
Danny: I'm sorry! I was hungry! I didn't know anyone was home, but I swear I didn't mean any harm!
Barry: I see. How long has it been since you last had food?
Danny: I don't know.
Barry: Really?
Danny sniffing: I'll leave, I'm sorry. Please don't call the cops.
Barry putting the bat down: Leaving before my one am meal? You can't! Stay, I could use the company.
Danny: ....one am meal?
Barry: Yeah, I can whip us up some pizzas. *turning to yell* IRIS, IT'S ALL GOOD. GO BACK TO BED. I'M GOING TO EAT
Iris: OKAY! ENJOY!
Danny: Um?
Barry: I have pepperoni, sausage or plain cheese. Which do you prefer?
Danny: Wait. Are you really going to make me pizza?
Barry: Well, it's frozen pizza. It takes about 15 minutes in my toaster oven, but trust me, it's the best brand. My nephew swears by it. My name is Barry, by the way, what's yours?
Danny: I...Ugh I'm Danny.
Barry: Nice to meet you Danny. You want to crash here after we eat?
Danny: What?
Barry: Spend the night here. A nap after eating always feels best.
Danny: ....what?
A few hours later Barry slipping back into bed: Iris.
Iris: Hmm?
Barry: I've adopted a son. His name is Danny. He's fifteen, meta, and running from his parents. Sweet thing. He took over the guest room, so now when we have guests stay over, they have to sleep on the pull-out couch.
Iris half alseep: Sounds good. Does he have your eyes?
Barry: Yeah surprisingly he does. I tucked him into bed.
Iris: That's nice.
Danny two walls away dressed in Wally' pjs, with a full stomch and freshly showered: How...how did he convince me to be adopted in only one hour???? Is he a witch?????
