like they're both definitely not overbearing or Strict parents and wei wuxian is still very much a Cool Fun Dad but lan wangjis parenting philosophy is "I grew up repressed and restricted and sheltered so I will make sure I do not give my child the same fate" while wei wuxians parenting philosophy is "I did whatever I wanted when I was younger and I DIED (died a yuan, Died)" which to me is Infinitely more entertaining than wei wuxian convincing his son to get drunk with him and lan wangji scolding them about it

we get little sneak peaks of this before he's even an adult.. HOW can you see wei wuxian be all "I'm not telling you how we're going to get your core back until you've finished your meal >:|" to jiang cheng and then think this man would be the one letting sizhui do whatever he wants

and this is not only funny because wei wuxians parenting style is so different from lan wangjis and the way he Himself acted as a teenager, we also must think about the fact that him and jiang cheng have almost the Exact same Parent Instincts and this terrifies them deeply. wei wuxian is a much more.... tender and traditionally affectionate and less,, shouty parent of course but oh the sheer comedic power of the fact that wei wuxians, "do you see that pit? no matter how old you become I will still plant you into that pit! understand?" and jiang chengs, "you think I can't grab you now? even when you're 30 years old, I will still grab you!" are, essentially, the same sentiment and I can Promise you that at least one (1) time both of them have shouted the exact same thing at their respective children at the exact same time and then turned to look at each other in utter horror

like the first time as a child he sees his uncle play his xiao, and he could have sworn he was playing it wrong, that it was supposed to be held horizontally, not vertically. 

or the way he knows lotuses are his favourite flowers even though they don’t grow in cloud recesses, and that if he keeps a lotus seed in his pocket it will bring him luck and protection. when jingyi asks how he knows this, sizhui shakes his head and murmurs it must be a folktale he heard somewhere. 

the way his father will play that song on his guqin and sizhui knows it deep in his bones as a lullaby, one that shrouds him in love and warmth but brings an inexplicable sadness that matches the grief in his father’s eyes as he plays. 

or when he sees acupuncture needles and thinks of a fierce woman in red who scolded others but was soft with him. 

or the way when he sees a grass butterfly toy at a market and he thinks of laughter and a smile brighter than the sun. of a vague recollection of a stolen afternoon with food, and a kind man in blue, and the feeling of happiness and light. 

and then he’s older and he meets the ghost general, wen ning, and he remembers an uncle in tatty grey robes with a pale face, who spoke to him in a hushed voice and played with him with gentle hands. whose heart no longer beat but still held more compassion than anyone else he knows. and sizhui’s memories come back fully, one by one, and he remembers.

Introduction

What is the “puppet theory” exactly? It was first raised during the second era “Zero to One”. ATEEZ is struggling with an internal conflict splitting themselves into two parts, the good and bad sides. Simple enough, but it is figuring out which side is controlling which. There is also the question of which side is in control during each era. It is obvious enough that the bad side is in control during HALA HALA, but after that, it is difficult to decipher which side is in control during all other songs/eras. 

ATEEZ vs ATEEZ

The subtle anarchy symbolism is scattered throughout their music videos first appearing in the background of the first era. Then the symbolism became more obvious in the second era. At first, it was speculated that the anarchy symbolism complimented the pirate/bandit theme in both eras. Soon, the comparisons of the anarchy symbolism were attached to an inner struggle ATEEZ is going through. That theory further expanded into the puppet theory where one side is controlling the other. It is figuring out which side is controlling the other. 

The obvious answer is the bad side is controlling the good side right? Well, this is partially correct. There is the overlying theme of an inner struggle occurring inside of ATEEZ throughout their discography. HALA HALA and Say My Name are the two music videos where it is the most apparent that there is a power struggle between the two sides. Hidden in plain sight within the choreography of HALA HALA, the bad side is quarreling for control against the good side. The good side is not entirely forced out of the body, but obviously struggles against the bad side. 

After examining the choreography of HALA HALA, these are the members who are on the good side and bad side (some members have further evidence to back up their side but I will touch on that later).

Bad side: Hongjoong, Jongho, San, Mingi, Yunho

Good side: Wooyoung, Yeosang, Seonghwa

Wait, all the members have a good and bad side right? What I gathered from watching the HALA HALA and Say My Name’s choreographies, there are members who have given up to either side. If all members were on the bad side during this era, then One to All era would have never happened. The three members on the good side “fit in” as double agents under the guidance that they will not be caught for snapping out of it. These three are crucial for “resetting” the balance in order to transition from Zero to One era to One to All. 

Side note, here is the story order that I believe the songs take place for transitions:

Say my Name, Treasure, Desire, Pirate King/HALA HALA (these two songs happen at the same time), Aurora, Illusion, Wave

Outwards Corruption

Hongjoong is the main mastermind behind the story. He is the one who ends up corrupting the rest of ATEEZ during the end choreography of Desire. Desire is the “bridge song” connecting the good and bad side together. Notice how the song does not have a real “drop” and starts building up towards the end and ends on a somewhat calm note. This ending chaos is the representation of Hongjoong becoming overwhelmed with the real “desire” to find treasure. I believe that ATEEZ did find the treasure, but it was not enough OR the treasure is what caused further corruption. This could explain the appearance of anarchy symbols in some promotional pictures for Pirate King. Another note is that the recent teaser image for the new era is from inside what appears to be a treasure box. Brightening the image reveals a red/orange tint and in HALA HALA, red is sprayed over the camera, but this could be corrupted ATEEZ spraying over a treasure box to mark it off so when the good side takes over again they will skip the marked treasure box. 

Moving onto One to All era, it is difficult to know which side is in control. The era is presented is a new chapter for ATEEZ to move on after the end of HALA HALA where Wooyoung “resets” the members as a last resort. Aurora symbolizes the group finding peace within themselves after the reset. This is more of my personal observation, but the mood of Aurora’s music video has a hint of melancholy to it. This could be ATEEZ reflecting on their actions and looking to the future which leads into Illusion. However, Illusion is not what it seems. While it may appear that ATEEZ snapped out of their corrupted states, it really is all an “illusion” as the title suggests. Either one member or more is still corrupted but is hiding it from the others. My guess is Yunho and Jongho are still corrupted by their bad sides as during the line choreography in Illusion they are the two members controlling how the line moves. Wave is their final destination and I believe Yunho and Jongho have “blended in” with the others to where no one can tell if they are corrupted or not. 

Side note: the choreography for Utopia plays into the corruption theme but it acts similarly to the line control move in Illusion and HALA HALA. 

Double Agents

The double agents are the members who could still be fully aware no matter which side is in control. These members’ good sides are able to stay away but still struggle against submitting to the bad side when Hongjoong corrupts them further in Desire. Wooyoung, Yeosang, and Seonghwa are the double agents. This could explain why Yeosang chooses to isolate himself in the glass box in Say my Name as to avoid future corruption. Hongjoong could also be a double agent, but I ruled this out as unlikely as he struggles to reject the notion of corrupting the others (notice how he drops the bugle in Say my Name but returns in HALA HALA with a megaphone). How Wooyoung and Seonghwa managed to become double agents is unknown, but Wooyoung does have the capability to “reset” all the members as a last resort. These three members are proven to be double agents as they “awaken” in the beginning of the HALA HALA choreography as they are the only members to do the connecting hand motions. All the other members move away from them and connect their hands with nothing. 

Miscellaneous Thoughts

For one, this is all based on creative interpretation and anyone can interpret the puppet theory however they wish. I would wait for the new comeback to drop, but it is better to set up the current storyline as is and wait for the new era to either drastically change this theory or add to the story.

If I were instead of WWX and LWJ in that temple after confessing my feelings, the only thing that would have been on my mind is LOVE. Like who the hell would care about evil schemes and danger? I bet when they sat closely together they were whispering all kinds of ….*stuff* to each other >:)

I finally watched Fatal Journey and I can’t stop thinking about Nie Huaisang, a person that’s known as a coward amongs the other cultivators, standing up to his brother in the temple as soon as he learns the truth about balancing the blade’s spirit.

As soon as he learns the truth about all the blood sacrifices he goes up to Nie Mingjue, in front of the other people (whose loyalty lies with both of them, but the orders come from the clan leader in the end), and yells at him about that. At this point he knows very well that his brother is dangerously prone to violence and irritable, that he isn’t really safe from it (no more than a few hours ago he almost got punched in the face by him!), that if his brother attacked him his defensive skills would be worthless. Huaisang is smart, he must be perfectly aware of all this, and he still stands straight, with tears in his eyes, and yells. That he refuses to budge on the issue, that what Nie Clan has been doing has been wrong and horrible and that its disciples deserve better, and that they should do better regardless of how their forefathers acted. Even if it will get him injured or ridiculed for acting like a child, he’s determined to make his brother see. To bring his kind, good-hearted older brother to his senses before he completely unravels before him.

I think it’s easy to miss between his initial role as a comic relief and all the manipulative genius of his later revenge plan, but Nie Huaisang is also one of the few characters whose moral compass and beliefs are extremely strong (even if they end up skewed by JGY’s betrayal). It’s very rare in this show. And even if he’s usually soft and a coward, he’s ridiculously brave and unrelenting when it really matters. And I love him a lot.

The saddest part of the untamed is still the dissolution of wwx and nhs’s friendship when all is revealed.

Because at the end, lan wangji got his love back, lan sizhui got his dad back, wen ning found another member of his clan, jiang cheng got his brother back (a slow recovery), jin ling found out the truth about his family and gained himself friends and another uncle who loves him, and lan xichen - although tragic - finally emerged from the lies that confounded him and still has the love of his brother, uncle and his clansmen. 

What exactly is hie huaisang left with? In the end, he is a like a wound, debrided and exposed.

I did not appreciate how much nie huaisang wanted jin guangyao dead until i realized his last sacrifice was not lan xichen, but nie huaisang himself.

He’s just trying to keep it a secret from Mingjue so he doesn’t have to but one day they’re invaded and he has no choice but to fight, and he fights well, dropping enemies left and right while Mingjue looks side eyes him with disbelief.

After they’ve saved their sect Mingjue lifts him bodily by the front of his robes with a growl. “How long have you known how to fight?!”

Huaisang chuckles nervously before prying Mingjue’s hands off him. “Well...I didn’t skip all my lessons, 大哥.”

Do you ever... just remember that all Nie Huaisang probably wanted to do was paint fans... raise birds... be spoilt by Da Ge... but then he watched Nie Mingjue die at the hands of another man he considered a brother and could never be the same again? That this carefree boy turned into arguably the most terrifying mastermind of his generation and orchestrated an elaboate revenge plot years in the making?? That he actually chose to be mocked and looked down on for years to tear down one brother figure and hurt another in the process all so that he could avenge his own???

You ever just stop and think about how much the cloud recesses trio changed from their youthful days. They went from the three boys who constantly broke rules for fun to eventually grow up and become the yiling patriarch, the sandu shengshou, the head-shaker. Each more terrifying then the other.

The accomplishments the three of them made are extraordinary and the villainous acts they have done are horrifying. Wei Wuxian who created a whole new brand of cultivation by himself but also murdered thousands of people. Jiang Cheng who built his sect from the ashes it became after the loss of his entire family but also tortured and killed demonic cultivators. Nie Huaisang who avenged his brother, defeating a person who destroyed the lives of many people but also manipulated & deceived the whole world implying that he took advantage of a lot of people to fulfil his goal.

The saddest thing is they all become who they are now from the loss of loved ones. Especially the loss of a sibling which had a HUGE lasting impact on each of them. Jiang Yanli’s death made Wei Wuxian lose his very sanity. Wei Wuxian’s death along with Jiang Yanli’s left Jiang Cheng alone in grief with nothing but anger to cover it up. Nie Mingjue’s death left Huaisang with using his Intelligence in very callous ways for the sake of avenging him.

The unjustified deaths of their siblings changed the very core who they used to be. Wei Wuxian who was bright and hopeful lost his very will to live. Jiang Cheng who once sought for a life next to his siblings now rules an entire sect alone in loneliness. Nie Huaisang who preferred to live in peacefullness gave up that very peace he cherished for revenge.

And to think that they once used to be just some carefree teenage boys who sneaked in alcohol into cloud recesses to get drunk, sneaked in porn to read and tease their classmates on, cheated on tests and ending up getting caught, gossiped and talked about the type of romantic partners they wanted, went hunting for a chicken just because why not. They were just happy and carefree boys who ended up losing too much, too young.

FUCK think about that scene where Nie Mingjue finally fucking loses it from his perspective:

Your tendons burst. You fall to the ground from the pain. But you can’t stay down. The man before you is your killer. And if your going to die than you will take him with you. You cannot stay down! You prop yourself up with your blade, ready to make the final kill of your life. You lift your head up to look your killer in the eyes-!

Your little brother is there.

In the grasp of your killer.

Your little brother, who has no skill at fighting; who can’t defend himself. Your only remaining family. He’s scared and doesn’t know what’s going on. You’ve been hard on the boy his whole life, but only because you know that this life is cruel to those who are weak. Because his lack of skill makes people look down on him. Despite your anger at him for his lack of dedication, his lack of progress he is still your little brother. You practically raised him yourself after your parents died. You love him.

And there he is, desperately screaming your name, hoping you’ll calm down; hoping you’ll live. But that murderer is holding onto him. In an instant Jin Guangyao could could end his life, blame it on you, say you killed him as you lost control. The Nie Brothers would be mourned and buried, their tale passed around as a senseless tragedy: the Nie Clan’s technique, which gave them their name in the cultivation world, being the very thing that ended them for good.

You lift your blade one last time and point it directly at Jin Guangyao as if to say, I know what you did. I know what you are. I know what you could do! But don’t you dare. Don’t you dare!

But what you don’t know is that your little brother isn’t the delicate, defenseless fool you and everyone else thinks he is. That as you stare down your killer, Jin Guangyao holds oh so tightly onto his own.
