And now that we have them, who else would just enjoy these things? Who would use them to solve a problem they have with some activities? Or in some outfits?

There’s a name for this, it’s called the Curb-Cut effect! Ever been walking down the street and noticed a sort of divot in the curb? That’s called a curb cut! They were originally implemented to allow wheelchair users to cross roads, but now they also help people with strollers, cyclists, skaters, and more!

The curb-cut effect is basically when we make a move to include or help out a group, and it has knock-on effects that help out a lot more people. Other examples include:

Closed captioning and subtitles are for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but are also useful to people who are in a public space and don’t have headphones, learning a new language, or just find it easier to have subtitles supplement their media.

Text to speech and audiobooks are technology intended for blind people, but it’s also helpful for people who aren’t fully blind but have a hard time reading small text, or for people who enjoy multitasking or can’t sit down and read.

Flexible-height desks are useful for short people and children. Accessibility washrooms also provide unisex washrooms for trans people. Elevators are helpful for those who have a hard time walking up or down stairs. Etc.

Tl;dr, designing for disability typically affects more than just the people it was originally intended for; designing for disability is important.
