nothing  super  dramatic  here,    and  honestly  it’s  not  going  to  effect  clint  as  much  as  my  other  blogs,    but  just  wanted  to  give  a  lil  update.    i’m  gonna  be  kind  of  spotty  because  i  started  my  new  job  this  week  !    lotsa  training,    lotsa  knowledge  means  my  brain  is  basically  soup  by  the  end  of  the  day.    should  level  out  after  this  week  or  maybe  the  next,    but  just  know  I  HAVE  NOT  DISAPPEARED.

gq  isn’t  dead.

it  seems  like  a  fairly  mundane  observation,    except  for  the  fact  that,    had  anything  gone  slightly  different,    he  might  not  be  able  to  say  that.    might  not  be  able  to  say  anything,    in  fact,    on  account  of  being  very,    incredibly  dead.    instead,    he  survived  with  only  ringing  ears  and  what  feels  like  an  inch  of  dust  and  debris  caked  on  his  skin.    well,    that,    and  the  general  feeling  of  being  hit  by  a  truck.

that’s  how  thor  finds  him    :    coughing  up  dust  and  climbing  his  way  over  the  remains  of  the  building  he  had  the  misfortune  of  OCCUPYING  when  it  collapsed.    he’s  still  a  bit  dazed,    and  his  ears  are  still  ringing  too  much  to  make  out  words,    but  there  is  no  mistaking  the  feeling  of  those  strong  arms  that  crush  him  against  a  solid  body.    if  before  felt  like  being  hit  by  a  truck,    this  ought  to  feel  like  being  an  unfortunate  occupant  of  a  trash  compactor,    but  it  doesn’t.    it  hurts,    just  a  little,    but  the  prevailing  feeling  that  comes  with  being  completely  surrounded  by  thor’s  impossibly  strong  embrace  is    :    SAFE.    so  safe  that  he  doesn’t  move,    at  least  for  a  little  while.    not  until  his  body  settles,    and  his  heart  falls  back  into  something  of  a  regular  rhythm.    only  then  does  he  pull  away,    a  hand  resting  squarely  on  thor’s  chest  and  giving  the  fabric  there  a  squeeze  that’s  as  much  for  his  own  affirmation  as  his  boyfriend’s.

❝    we  gotta    . . .    gotta  go.    no  way  walkers  didn’t  hear  that.    ❞     he’s  not  dead,    but  that  could  still  change  in  an  instant  out  here.

the  mission  was  a  success.    it  maybe  wasn’t  as  clean  as  the  powers  that  be  might  have  liked,    but  their  target  was  neutralized,    a  plot  to  overthrow  a  developing  government  was  halted,    and  THE  GOOD  GUYS  WON.    it  makes  the  budding  ache  of  sustained  injuries  just  a  little  more  bearable.    that    . . .    and  the  tequila  helps.   

❝    i    . . .    need  a  shower,    ❞    gq  mutters,    taking  a  long  pull  from  the  bottle  before  handing  it  over  to  his  partner.    it’s  a  ways  off,    he  knows.    a  few  more  hours  on  the  plane  and  at  least  one  debriefing  once  they’re  back  on  home  soil.    he  shouldn’t  complain    ;    a  seat  in  a  private  jet  is  a  hell  of  a  lot  cushier  than  the  BACK  OF  A  C  -  17,    and  he  could  do  worse  for  company.    said  company  takes  a  respectable  drink  from  their  shared  bottle  before  passing  it  back  to  him,    but  all  she  has  to  offer  up  in  response  is  a  soft  hum.    she’s  probably  as  tired  as  he  is,    gq  thinks.    a  weight  on  his  shoulder  confirms  that  theory.    he  spares  a  glance  sideways  and  finds  her  head  resting  against  him.    hard  to  tell  from  the  angle,    but  gq  wonders  if  her  eyes  are  closed.    ❝    and  pizza.    like,    a  whole  pizza.    ❞

gq  spends  a  lot  of  nights  sleeping  alone.    it’s  a  FACT  OF  LIFE,    given  his  job,    one  that  hasn’t  changed  all  that  much  now  that  he’s  in  what  might  just  be  one  of  if  not  the  most  committed  relationship  of  his  life.    because  steve’s  job  pulls  him  away  to  distant  locales  frequently,    and  gq’s  job  does  the  same    ―    very  rarely  the  same  locale  at  the  same  time.    it’s  okay.    it  works    ;    they  make  it  work,    and  at  the  end  of  the  day  it  makes  the  time  they  do  have  together  that  much  better.    but  still    . . .    tonight,    gq  is  sleeping  alone.

he’s  asleep  right  up  until  he  hears  the  front  door  unlocking,    and  he’s  even  still  half  -  asleep  when  he  hears  the  boot  falls  that  go  quiet  after  a  few  steps  as,    presumably,    boots  are  abandoned.    he’s  even  partly  convinced  that  he’s  still  asleep  when  the  mattress  shifts  behind  him,    and  the  familiar  scent  of  the  base’s  basic  soap  and  shampoo  fills  his  nose  confirming  what  the  boots  and  unlocking  door  could  only  imply.    STEVE.    steve  in  his  apartment.    steve  in  his  bed  smelling  like  cheap  soap  and  expensive  leather.    steve,    whose  body  seems  to  warm  up  the  whole  room  as  his  hand  rests  on  gq’s  hip,    and  his  lips  press  against  gq’s  shoulder.    ❝    y’better  not  be  a  dream   . . .    ❞    he  grumbles,    even  as  he  can’t  stop  the  sleepy  smile  from  tugging  at  the  corners  of  his  mouth.    the  only  response  is  a  laugh,    warm  breath  puffed  out  against  his  skin  as  steve  continues  leaving  a  trail  of  slow  kisses  down  gq’s  bicep.     ❝    m’  be  so  pissed  if  y’r  a  dream.    ❞

he  doesn’t  like  following  the  orders  of  a  man  who  is,    for  all  intents  and  purposes,    A  CIVILIAN.    he  doesn’t  like  turning  his  back  to  danger.    but  most  of  all  ?    gq  doesn’t  like  the  idea  of  leaving  any  man    ―    even  BATMAN     ―    behind.    except  that’s  the  job.    contain  the  security  breach  and  rescue  the  captive  civilians,    and  there’s  no  denying  that  gq  and  his  team  are  better  suited  for  the  latter  than  the  vigilante  and  vice  versa    (    even  if  he’s  not  too  keen  on  admitting  that  last  part  aloud    ).

it  was  a  long  mission.    ended  well,    and  everyone  is  in  one  piece,    but  the  mood  throughout  the  hold  is  sheer  exhaustion.    gq  feels  it  too,    sinking  deeper  into  his  bones  as  wraps  up  the  initial  debrief  with  hill  over  comms.    the  call  ends  just  in  time  for  him  to  let  out  a  yawn  he’s  been  HOLDING  IN  for  what  feels  like  ages.    at  least  now  he  can  sit.

he  finds  jemma  in  a  seat  looking  every  bit  as  tired  as  he  feels.    it’s  easier  to  tell  with  her    ;    she  doesn’t  carry  her  fatigue  in  the  same  way  most  of  gq’s  team  does.    no,    hers  is  in  the  absence  of  a  data  pad  or  book  or  even  her  phone.    when  jemma  simmons  is  too  tired  to  read  or  work,    it’s  been  a  LONG  DAY,   indeed.    ❝    this  seat  taken  ?    ❞    gq  asks,    but  he’s  already  sitting  down.    he  doesn’t  get  the  impression  that  she’ll  mind.    he’s  proven  right  when,     without  a  word,    her  body  leans  into  his,    her  head  coming  to  rest  on  his  shoulder.    it  shouldn’t  make  him  smile    ―    hell,    he  didn’t  know  he  still  had  the  energy  to  smile    ―    but  it  does,    and  he  does.    that  smile  is  still  on  his  face  as  he  leans  back  into  his  seat,    head  back  and  eyes  closing.

𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒  𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑  𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍  𝐎𝐍𝐄  𝐅𝐎𝐑  𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄-𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒.    sitting  in  the  same  spot  for  long  periods  of  time,    watching  the  same  old  shit…    it’s  never  appealed  to  her.    but  hey,    if  she’s  getting  paid  for  it?    she  won’t  complain.    but  this  is  just  another  one  of  those  nights—    sat  in  the  same  hotel  room  for  what  feels  like  ages,    and  so  far?    nothing  special.    it’s  gotten  to  the  point  where  she’s  sat  back  eating  trail  mix  while  she  lets  gq  do  all  the  watching.

and  though  it’s  not  unlikely  to  come  out  of  a  stake-out  empty-handed,    he’s  right.    something  about  this  situation  is  just…    too    perfect.    brows  knit  at  his  comment,    and  she  leans  forward,    tapping  the  side  of  her  spy  glass  to  zoom  in  to  get  a  better  look  at  the  situation.    the  target…    he’s  almost  behaving  far  too  well,    almost  like  he’s    trying    to  look  normal.    not  to  mention,    the  buyer  should  have  been  there  by  now…    and  then  it  dawns  on  her.    ❝  it’s  almost  midnight,    why  is  he  still  wearin’  sunglasses?  ❞

within  seconds,    analytics  are  run  and  a  red  square  frames  the  man  in  their  sights.    ❝  that’s—    that’s  not  our  fuckin'  duck.  ❞    and  now  her  gut  tells  her  that  maybe  going  in  undercover  was  the  better  option  here.    she  turns  to  gq,    suddenly  at  a  loss,    unsure  of  what  their  next  move  should  be.    ❝  edwards?  ❞

it’s  never  easy,    is  it  ?

he  had  a  bad  feeling  about  this  op    ―    now,    he  can’t  decide  between  being  happy  about  being  right  and  being  frustrated  as  hell  that  their  target  is  making  things  difficult.    right  this  moment,    he’s  feeling  something  somewhere  in  the  middle,    but  which  way  it  tips  is  almost  definitely  going  to  depend  on  how  the  NEXT  FEW  MINUTES  GO.

while  recovering  from  the  INCIDENT  IN  MIDWAY  CITY,    gq  is  approached  by  lieutenant  general  swanwick  to  lead  an  elite  special  operations  unit  under  swanwick’s  command.    this  unit  is  tasked  with  monitoring  and,    if  need  be,    combatting  extraterrestrial  and  supernatural  incursions  on  planet  earth.    gq  accepts.    he  owes  it  to  the  men  and  civilians  that  lost  their  lives  in  midway.

in  his  new  role  as  LIEUTENANT  COMMANDER,    gq  works  closely  with  some  of  the  united  states’  most  powerful  allies    ―    human  and  otherworldly  alike.    it’s  his  mission  to  make  sure  nothing  like  midway  can  ever  happen  again.
