there’s a reason I always trust fanfic writers to understand and do the characters justice more than I trust canon writers
Writing is basically falling in love with an idea,
then immediately doubting if you're good enough for it.
Love at first sight quickly turns into anxiety at first paragraph.
yuuuup
Heads up for artists - Twitter has updated their privacy policy to enable any and all tweets to be used to train AI models.
If you have your art on there you may want to take it down before it comes into effect on September 29th
Super important. I don’t share my art via twitter. But I have colleagues who do.
AO3 Etiquette
It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:
Kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished - you kudos.
If you liked it, you should comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.
No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it. Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity. Don't ruin that for them.
Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.
There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.
For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.
Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLANTONIC, like friendship or family.
Nothing is banned. This is an implicit rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.
People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.
Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.
Avoid deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - orphan it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to you anymore.
This is a creative fanfiction archive. No essays on your insights or theories please. There are other places for that.
I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.
I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.
People are so entitled in the comments damn like no you writer don’t have to put up with you being rude they wrote you entertainment for free
To the people in the notes who are insisting that they have the right to leave negative feedback on AO3:
What you’re not understanding is that fandom is not a service, it’s a community. I saw someone compare leaving a comment on AO3 to reviewing a product on Amazon - if you didn’t like the product, you’re going to say so. But fanworks are not products and you didn’t pay money for them. They were shared with you.
Leaving un-asked-for criticism in AO3 comments isn’t like reviewing a product you were disappointed with. It’s like going to a friend’s house when they’ve cooked a meal and telling them all the things that are wrong with the food. Sure, you can do it, but it’s rude as hell and they are probably not going to invite you to dinner again.
("Can you leave crit in comments” has been a debate as long as I’ve been in fandom, but 20 years ago the argument was “I’m helping the writer improve!” and not “I am a consumer with a right to complain.” Fandom has gotten more creepily capitalistic over the decades but jerks are evergreen, I guess.)
And don’t get butthurt if the author deletes your horrible comment. Don’t go back and spam, don’t mass report.
Ya know, don’t be a jackass.
and you know what YOU KNOW WHAT. they never, not ONCE, gave Sam one of these angsty plots with Cas.
Why wasn't Sam sent to Purgatory with Cas?
Why wasn't Sam seeing him (wasn't he supposed to be the psychic one anyway) after failing to save him?
Why wasn't Sam mocked by demons for having an angel friend?
Why didn't Sam lose hope whenever Cas died?
Why didn't Sam begging for his life break the brainwashing?
Why didn't Sam have to take care of Cas' dead body?
Why, mr. Kripke?
WHY???
I know we joke about it a lot but truly. We know Dean is in love with Cas because Sam isn't. Sam never has been. It wouldn't make sense for any of those archs to happen with Sam because Sam isn't in love with Cas. Dean is.

“Charlie,” Cas says over the radio, “What road are we on? Where is this going to take us?” He waits for a beat, then keys the mic again. “Kevin? We’ve got to get ahead of this storm. What’s on the satellite?” “Cas, this is a slippery one. F2, possible F3,” Kevin says. Claire breaks in, “It’s turning again!” Charlie comes in next, “This is Charlie, this is Charlie. She’s at two o'clock, and she’s heading our way!” Cas can just hear Balthazar yelling about driving and the tornado. He shakes his head. “Cas,” Gabe breaks in. “Cas, we got ourselves a Barn Burner. She ain’t gonna last long; she’s got other places to be!” Cas keys up, “I know Gabe, we got it.” Everything starts to go dark as the clouds above them crowd up on each other. The wind is picking up, and debris is being blown onto the windshield as they drive. Dean’s gut starts talking to him, telling him something isn’t right when they go over a hill and see the twister again. Cas grabs the camera off the seat and starts taking shots as the rain comes down. He lowers the camera and chews his lip. “Dean. Rain bands.” Lisa looks at Cas, confused. “Rain bands?” Cas points to the fields. “Look at how the rain is coming off the fields.” Dean swears and floors the gas. As they reach a bridge going across a small lake, the twister dances across the water. He’s pretty sure this is about to get really bad. “Jesus, Dean.” Cas breathes. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” “I don’t think anyone has.” He leaves anything else unsaid, trying to keep them on the road and keep an eye on the twister simultaneously. “Dean-” The two men swear as the twister splits. The sisters twirl and twine around each other, and it’s a terribly beautiful sight. “We can’t attack it from this angle.” “Watch me,” Dean grits out. A beat passes as they drive, trying to outrun the twins dancing on the lake. And then, the strangest thing happens. A cow flies past them. “Is that?” Lisa asks. “Cow,” Cas answers, mouth open as it passes by. Then another cow flies past, going the opposite direction. “And another cow.” “I uh. I think that was the same cow, actually,” Dean replies. Then he realizes he’s not really paying attention to the road and focuses. “They are drunker than skunks. We’ve got no path,” and he’s starting to panic now. “Shit,” Cas growls. “Get us out of here, Dean.” “I’m trying!” He floors the gas at first, but the sisters are moving faster than the truck can, so he slams on the breaks, hoping against hope that they’ll pass in front of them. Until a third tornado joins in. “HANG ON!” he yells as the three tornadoes converge on the truck, spinning them around and around, the sound of shrieking filling the air. Dean braces his hands against the roof of the cab and closes his eyes. He grits his teeth when he hears Lisa scream in fear, and all he can do now is hope the truck is stout enough these little twisters can’t pick it up and toss it like a toy. They spin and spin until finally, the trio of funnel clouds have decided they’ve had enough and dissipate. Dean cracks his eyes open and looks out over the lake. He breaths out, shakily, before the adrenaline floods his body, and he clambers out of the truck. Cas collides into him, and they cheer, babbling at each other and looking up at the sky where the tornadoes had retreated. This is my second piece for this years SPNMBB! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cas sighs and climbs onto the blue Doppler van’s roof, affectionately known as the mobile lab, and sets to fiddling with the radar dish. He can hear music wafting from Gabe’s bus, and he smiles as he waits for Sam to give him the signal to turn the dish back on. A thump on the roof sounds and Sam Winchester yells out to him. “OK, doc, hang in there. Fairly sure it’s fixed now.” There’s silence for a few more beats, then, “Go for it.” Cas flips on the Doppler, and for a second, it looks like it’s going to work, then sparks start flying. “God damn it, Sam!” he swears as he yanks his hand back, shaking it. “Shit, sorry! Hang on.” Cas aims a kick at the base of the dish. “Fuck, this thing is useless,” he growls. “Sorry!” A few seconds later, the damn thing beeps and starts sweeping from side to side, and Cas stomps on the roof. “Hey! It’s working now, thank God. Give me a reading!” “Hold your damn horses, Cas,” Sam grumbles as he unfolds his six-foot-plus frame out of the van. He lumbers over to the laptop that’s connected to the Doppler. “Alright, hit me. Where do you want it?” Cas shields his eyes and looks at the horizon, studying the clouds. He can see the lightning playing in the clouds and the distant rain as it sweeps across the prairie. He rattles off the directions he wants Sam to focus on and continues to scan the staging area, taking in his team and the preparations they are doing for the day. Gabriel Milton is sitting in his bus, The Archangel, likely watching porn alongside the weather forecasts. Cas has no idea how his cousin manages to do three things at once because now, he’s also treating them to a rousing rendition of Eric Clapton’s Motherless Child over the loudspeaker. Cas looks over to his navigator and best friend, Charlie Bradbury. He and Charlie had met in school, and the short, plucky redhead is the best navigator in the country. She can find a way to the needle in the middle of a haystack with her eyes closed. Right now, she’s smoothing out her maps on a haystack next to the truck she rides in with Balthazar Roche, an English transplant with a love of V-neck t-shirts. Kevin Tran, a young college student, is standing next to her. Charlie looks annoyed, and the wind shifts so he can hear part of their conversation. “All I’m saying is don’t fold the maps!” Charlie says as she works to flatten out her jumbled maps. “I didn’t fold the map!” Kevin says defensively. Charlie rolls her eyes. “Uh-huh. Then why is Kansas just one big mess, huh? There’s a big ole crease through Wichita,” she says, pointing to what Cas assumes is Wichita on the map. “Roll the maps. Got it?” Cas turns away from Charlie, chuckling, and sees a red Dodge speeding up to the staging area. Ah, that must be Dean. He turns away and starts fiddling with the cords attached to the Doppler, making sure they are correctly anchored. Stay tuned to @spn-mediabigbang to see more art (mid-April) and the full fic posting in late April to early May. A Veteran’s Christmas by Wargurl83
Honorably discharged from the Marines, Captain Dean Winchester is on his way to Cincinnati when he falls asleep and crashes the Impala right outside River’s Crossing. Castiel Novak offers Dean the use of his guesthouse for as long as it takes to get the Impala fixed. As Dean spends time with Cas and the town, he finds himself falling in love. But will Cas’ ex keep Dean from what he really wants?
Written on the Page by Andromache_42
Several years ago, a freak Kansas Christmas Eve snowstorm trapped Castiel in the idyllic prairie town of Holly Bough where he met charming bookstore owner Dean. Every year since, Castiel has made an excuse to spend the holidays in Holly Bough. This year, though, a once-in-a-century flood dampened the town’s Christmas spirit. Together with the town, Castiel has helped rebuild the town’s traditions and now, finally, he’ll get to show Dean the (candied) fruits of his labors.
