though she was meant to destroy the world, her name was esperanza. for sometimes you have to burn everything to ashes, to be able to built something better.

i am officially moving laurel to her own blog, so all current threads will be moved >> @sonicjustice ( still under construction but should be ready very soon for your pleasure! ) so don't be surprised if a weirdo reblogs your reply, it's just me. but i'll be send y'all messages just to be sure!
iâm genuinely considering making laurel her own blog because sheâs wildly taking over this one anyway. and laurel deserves all the nice things, right?
â i see. â alex chuckled, motioning towards the pool table before she wandered over and picked up the triangle, beginning to sort the balls. âalright. the one to the top, eight to the middle, one striped and one solid in the bottom corners. the rest doesnât really matter. thisâŚâ she snagged the white ball from the table, âis the cue ball. i assume you know what itâs used for. now, before we get any further into the rules, show me how youâd hold the cue to hit it.â
it was weirdly comfortable, despite how awkward not knowing how to play made laurel feel. alex seemed so non-judgmental and willing to teach that laurel just kept smiling. â alright. time to show you what iâve got, i guess.â her grip on the cue was almost painfully tight as she lowered her upper body, fingers trembling as she rested the other end of the cue between them. â i can't remember a game ever making me feel like this. â

â i wonât judge you. not for the root beer or not particularly liking bars. maybe a little on your pool playing skills. but iâm willing to help you out if you want. â
â i am much better hitting people with cues than at hitting the balls on the table. â laurel smiled brightly at the other woman. â teach me how to play for real? â
like yeah the wonder woman script is gross but there will never be something more misogynistic then what joss whedon did to cordelia chase because charisma carpenter got pregnant so like call me when he tops that.Â
â well, i was gonna promise to go easy on you. but in that case⌠letâs see what youâve got. â
â you are going to be disappointed in what i have, because pools and bars arenât my thing. i mean, iâm drinking root beer, of all things. â
âSara?â Her brows furrowed. âWhoâs Sara?â Kara asked, confused because she had thought the plushie belonged to Laurel. Granted, she hadnât believed Laurel owned any stuffed toys until she chanced upon it in her room while she was collecting the dirty laundry.
âIt looked like it could use a wash. Isnât it much better now? It looks like itâs almost new and it smells nice and fresh!â The wide smile on her face faltered and slowly dissipated as she took in the expression on Laurelâs face.
âUm⌠Should I not have done that? Iâm sorry⌠I should have realised there was a reason why you never washed it all this whileâŚâ Kara swallowed nervously as she bit on her lower lip.
âI donât remember it ever smelling nice,â she whispered as she held the soft little blue shark to her chest. It was weird, there was so little comfort to get from it now. Almost felt like Sara was gone all over again, in a way.
She couldnât blame Kara for that. Kara didnât know, it was an honest mistake, Laurel knew that. âSara is my little sister. She believes Iâm dead, just like I did,â she explained, a sad little smile on her lips. Thinking about Sara still made her smile, even with so much between them. âThe shark didnât smell like her anymore, but it smelled like home.â
Stuffed animal against her heart, Laurel reached out and placed a hand on her roommateâs arm. âYou didnât know, Kara. Itâs... itâs okay. Itâs just an old shark.â
âSara used to have a stuffed animal. It was this old, worn out shark that she got from the starling aquarium. Every time something awful would happen to her, I would always find her holding that stupid little shark close to her chest. And now that my sister´s dead, again the only thing that I can think about is finding that dumb stuffed animal and putting it in her armsâ
âThank you. Seriously. I donât⌠I donât know what to say. Iâm not sure I deserve this chance, but Iâm going to do everything I can to make you proud.â Alex told the Canary earnestly. Her desire to make an impression on her heroine was strong, and she would do her best to stay on the straight & narrow if it meant earning her respect and trust. All sheâd ever wanted was to work alongside the woman, whom she imagined was just as beautiful under that mask. It wasnât like it covered much of her face. Just enough to confuse her identity.Â
âThat makes perfect sense. The people you love. Can I ask? Do you have a boyfriendâŚ? A girlfriend? A⌠spouse? Or is that crossing a line? I imagine romance doesnât come easy in this line of work.â Alex hadnât dated in a long time but that was because of her own misgivings about trusting others. It didnât have anything to do with being a vigilante and everything to do with her uncertainty. As the Black Canary told her when and where to meet, she nodded with obvious enthusiasm. âScoutâs honor. No trouble. Iâll..see you then, Black Canary.â She repeated the name with a little grin. There were stores that sold action figures of this woman, and she was going to train her. Ravage couldnât have chosen a better person to catch her in the act.
âYouâd be surprised how easy romance can be when you spend your nights running around in tight leather.â Or when you were the Arrow, really. Laurel wasnât sure how he had managed to get around the way he had, but it was impressive â but given that it had started with Helena Bertinelli, scary might be a better word to describe how relationships could end up being for vigilantes. âBut I can neither confirm nor deny anything about my private life for now.â She smiled, happy with her response to the particularly personal question, something that she hadnât expected before the opportunity to reveal who she really was to Alex. âBe safe.â
Laurel was never impatient but sitting at her desk to wait for Friday to come revealed itself to be much more complicated than anticipated. The thought that something could happen to Alex was eating at her, the worry making hours pass by too slowly.
But now that she sat in the clocktower, Laurel couldnât help but think that this would be too much and that she didnât have enough to offer and make Ravage better. Provided that Alex came tonight, they would do anything too dangerous to ensure that they would both stay alive, able to get home without too many scratches on their bodies. She adjusted the mask, the whole Black Canary costume on for the exception of the collar, safely tucked away in her bag â bag that contained her day clothes. Laurel hadnât given a precise time, and the sun was barely down, if she made her appearance soon, it would without a doubt show eagerness, and if she didnât, well, Laurel would have no choice but to wait.
@warlockcd gets a starter for earth38 laurel based on this plot::
Kara had been beyond excited when Barry asked her for a favour. Her first thought was that she was getting a chance to travel to his Earth with him for another superhero team-up, but it wasnât; it was something better. She barely hesitated when she agreed to his request. After all, she had never had a roommate before, much less one who had been a vigilante. It would be fun.
And when she met Laurel, Kara knew she had made the right decision. The woman was nice, smart and charismatic, not to mention that she was pretty too. In an attempt to make Laurel feel more welcomed, Kara decided that she would take the initiative to do their laundry for the week.Â
After collecting the load from the washer after it was done, she passed Laurelâs room and poked her head around the door to check in on her new roommate. âLaundryâs done. Do you wanna head out for dinner or should we call for takeout?â Kara asked as she held up her laundry basket with their fresh clothes, a stuffed shark head peeking through the layers of fabric.
It had seemed insane at first, it seemed just that way, letting everyone she loved and cared about believe that she was very much dead to make sure that her life was safe. Some mornings, Laurel still woke up thinking that she was in her own bed in Star City and that she would be getting breakfast with Thea.
National City was good. Kara was good; she really was good to her and surprisingly understanding of her situation. Always nice and bright. Laurel genuinely liked the girl, sunshine smile, super strength and all â made for the most interesting roommate after someone who had been trained by the worst of assassins anyone could imagine.
âThanks for that, Kara. Weâve been ordering a lot, maybe we should try to go out this time?â She marked the page of the book she had picked up from her roommateâs little collection, since CatCo magazines couldnât keep her busy long enough. Her eyes widened just as they found the laundry. Sara. Laurel hurried to her feet and grabbed the little blue and grey shark that now looked cleaner than she remembered ever seeing it. She could feel her heart sink in her chest. âYou put Saraâs shark in the wash?â She couldnât look away from it. âWhy did you do that?â
âFlattery wonât get you out of anything, Laura,â Cat admonished, though flattered she was to be called complicated. Sure beat simple, easy. Although for that to be followed up by a blatant underestimationâone step forward, three steps back. Between aliens with all sorts of abilities and metahumans popping out of an inter-dimensional tube-y thing, Laurel was the one who would likely not believe what Cat had to say. Not that she would. She would keep her secrets close, until she found a good way to use them.
Raising an eyebrow, Cat looked intently at Laurel. âBlack Canary? What kind of backwater place do you come from where people are named after the color of their costume? Inane.â No, that name simply wouldnât do. âYour shriek is your most-often mentioned quality, so I could possibly be persuaded to The Canary. But I have a shortlist of names that are just so much better. Too bad we already had a Banshee, now thereâs a name. Maybe The Punisher. You do have a BDSM-vibe going with that costume.â
It had taken a few days to get used to being called Laura, and she sometimes still didnât react to the name â Eve was good at reminding her that it was her new work identity, even though it was highly unlikely that Cat didnât know her real name. Laurel had a feeling that there was still some sort of awkwardness, as neither of them seemed to be willing to completely open up. She really needed to work on trusting more people in this world.
She sat at the kitchen counter and reached in her back for the clasp of the Canary Cry, the collar usually growing uncomfortable when she didnât have the rest of the costume one. âItâs not a shriek, itâs a cry. A canary cry,â Laurel corrected, a little smile curling up her lips â though it disappeared at Catâs last comment. âDo you really think that it looks like a bondage suit?â she questioned, a quick glance thrown towards the leather jacket. If only it had been the first comment of this kind. At least it was easier to swallow coming from Cat than from Malcolm. âI would rather we avoid... tainting my work with a sex-themed name. Donât you have something a bit more bird of prey than BDSM?â
