Balloons shaped like sealskin floats greet visitors to Vancouverâs Fazakas Gallery this month. Avataq is one of seven pieces from Inuit sculptor Couzyn van Heuvelen. âI make objects,â he says, referring to the utilitarian tools he has refashioned into intricate art pieces. âFigurative work â I donât have much of an interest in it. Itâs so direct. I like to have something where the meaning is a little less obvious.â

American illustrator Maxfield Parrish originally created this painting to be reproduced in Collierâs magazine. The Lantern Bearers captures the sense of imagination, theatrical appeal, and luminous paint that made Parrishâs work so popular. He applied layers of pure pigment and varnish to create a brilliant depth of color. Figures dressed as clowns hang gold-hued lanterns, which glow against the blue night sky. While the six lanterns being handled by the clowns appear clearly, the nature of the four spheres in the distance is more ambiguous. Perhaps one of them is the moon...
