(1) It doesnât glorify or romanticize colonialism. It is some real-ass shit.
(2) It has amazing art.
(3) The main human character is Native American.
(4) It doesnât stereotype or generalize or dehumanize Native Americans.
(5) Itâs about horses!!!!

WHAT TO DO AT AN ICE CHECKPOINT, ESPECIALLY IF YOUâRE A WHITE CITIZEN
(please, please, please copy, paste, and share widely):
-Border Patrol can verify citizenship within 100 miles of a border or âexternal boundary.â This includes coastlines so NYC is within the 100-mile zone.
-Border patrol can only ask brief questions about citizenship, and they cannot hold you for an extended time without cause.
-You always have the right to remain silent. You do not need to answer their questions.
-***WITH THAT SAID, IF YOU ARE A BORN CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE WHITE, YOU NEED TO SPEAK THE FUCK UP.***
-The most important acts of resistance are the small ones. Make it difficult and uncomfortable for ICE agents to do their jobs. They are counting on citizens to turn a blind eye and allow them to deport undocumented citizens without challenge. Disabuse of that notion.
-If you are on a train, bus, or anything else and ICE or CBP boards, you need to stand up and loudly let everyone know that they have the right to remain silent or only answer questions in the presence of an attorney, no matter their citizenship or immigration status. There have been numerous reports that confronting the agents in this way has caused them to leave without verifying citizenship. THIS CAN SAVE LIVES.
-If you see anyone being held up by immigration, loudly ask if they are being detained and if they are free to go.
-Immigration officers cannot detain anyone without reasonable suspicion, an agent must have specific facts about you that make it reasonable to believe you are committing or committed, a violation of immigration law or federal law.
If an agent detains you, you can ask for their basis for reasonable suspicion, and they should tell you.
-Always say no to a search and let everyone know that they can and should refuse consent to a search.
-They cannot search or arrest anyone without facts about that make it probable that they are committing, or committed, a violation of immigration law or federal law.
-Silence alone meets neither of these standards. Nor does race or ethnicity alone suffice for either probable cause or reasonable suspicion
-As white citizens, we have a level of privilege which protects us from retaliation from ICE for being ârudeâ and making a scene, which makes it our DUTY to speak up and make sure people without the same privilege know their rights. GET LOUD. YELL. YELL IN SPANISH IF YOU KNOW IT. LET PEOPLE KNOW THEY DONâT HAVE TO SAY SHIT. MAKE ICE UNCOMFORTABLE. THROW SAND IN THE GEARS OF WHITE SUPREMACY.
BONUS INFO:
-It is perfectly legal to record immigration agents as long as you are not on government property or at a port of entry. If your train/bus gets board, pull your phone out and start videotaping immediately.
-If you are detained or see someone getting detained, get the agentâs name, number, and any other identifying information. Get it on tape.
-Contact the ACLU if you see someoneâs rights being violated.
This alone is reason enough for me to start studying Spanish again
I literally just went over how to say the basics of this in Spanish to see if I could. Itâs probably not perfect, but it should get the point across.
Given the recent announcement by the current 45 admin, this needs to make the rounds again.

ITS HER ITS THAT GIRL
this is literally what i look like when iâm reading one of those 20k word fics with the really long lowercase titles that are formatted (like this) and i finally reach the part where the characters both realise theyâve been mutually pining for each other the entire time
BIG DISCLAIMER: i was 9 when 9/11 happened, so this might be more about my own crystalizing tastes than anything else. i think itâs a pretty darn good theory tho and other people have validated it.
BIGGER DISCLAIMER: i am not saying that country music prior to 9/11 was free from nationalist, racist, misogynist undertones - i just think that these themes became more the norm!
MY HOT TAKE:
with very few exceptions, including goodbye earl, before he cheats, and daddy Iessons (side note - all women!) 9/11 ruined country music. around 2014 onward weâve got margo price, sturgill simpson, jason isbell etc., who are making country music great again (wink), but those folks are mostly considered âalternativeâ country. the mainstream country music for well over a decade now is a glut of trash performative patriotic / working-class-but-not-really lab-crafted budweiser-sponsored nonsense that has managed to sound rebellious (or has convinced its fans that it sounds rebellious) without ever actually questioning any power structure. so much so that artists who ACTUALLY criticized the government were literally blacklisted for nearly a decade (the dixie chicks)
pre-9/11 country music, though not perfect or ideologically pure by any stretch, did not have the raging american flag painted truck boner that comes to mind for a lot of people who say âi like everything except rap and countryâ
SPECIFICALLY, toby keithâs âcourtesy of the red, white, and blue (the angry american)â (2002) literally destroyed country music. it was a direct answer to the 9/11 attacks and war song in support of the invasion of afghanistan. the lyrics read like a disjointed feverish email chain letter forwarded from your great uncle sprinkled with glittering american flag gifs and heavily saturated pictures of bald eagles. the entire song is lifted from an estimated 248 peeling bumper stickers collected from rusted trucks on cinder blocks in overgrown yards, cut up and arranged to fit a catchy, formulaic tune that is almost certainly the background music playing in george w. bushâs head at all times.
âweâll put a boot in your ass, itâs the american way and uncle sam put your name at the top of his list and the statue of liberty started shakinâ her fist and the eagle will fly, and itâs gonna be hell, when you hear mother freedom start a'ringinâ her bellâ
country music and the new country musicians that toby keith paved the way for became so pro establishment and so unquestioningly nationalistic that, again, the dixie chicks who went against this grain were blacklisted by the industry and received death threats from country music fans. hell, there are folks who STILL froth at the mouth at the mere mention of the dixie chicks.
9/11 killed outlaw country - how can you sing the praises of law breakers when your main circuit consists of singing to troops? there are some great classic country songs critiquing the police state - especially from johnny cash and merle haggard - now country music artists hold fundraisers for FOPs. new country music is basically in-law country music.
you donât have to write a pro-bush patriotic anthem to be part of this post-9/11 ruination. playing meaningless songs about living in the heart of (read: white) america, eschewing the city (read: not white), and cracking open a cold one with the boys for âauthenticâ country music is also important to the war effort.
thereâs a progression of themes here:
post 9/11 top tier: war anthem, vocally patriotic, directly used as pro war propaganda; which paved the way for: âthings used to be so much betterâ thinly veiled racist laments, good for campaign ads; which paved the way for meaningless party anthems - attempts to make things âlike they used to beâ and craft a reality that neither the artist nor listener likely ever experience.
that brings us to what most people think of today when they say they hate country music: the country party anthem - âtiny hot gal in tight jean shorts who can drink beer like the guys, she doesnât like beyoncĂŠ Like Other Girls, oh sheâs so into me and my truck, iâm gonna take her fishing after i finish sowing my corn - sung by a guy whoâs never touched a tractorâ - has overtaken the tragic, done me wrong, despairing country ballads of tammy wynette, george jones, and even up into pre-9/11 contemporaries like reba mcentire and george strait. you didnât necessarily have to be country to relate to their pain. now you have to perform suburban redneckness to enjoy luke bryan.
when was the last time you heard a sad country song?
after 9/11, cowboys (whether or not they had ever been near a cow) werenât allowed to be sad anymore (no more done me wrong country), and they certainly werenât allowed to question authority (no more outlaw country). partying hardy became the most important American Thing and if you donât sing about that, our Enemies Will Win.
so - understanding that country music has always had bad stuff, and that like any genre it suffers from commercialization, 9/11 DESTROYED COUNTRY MUSIC. and toby keith gleefully helped destroy it.
for some further evidence of the decline of country music, please listen to the dixie chicksâ âlong time goneâ which is an indictment of the industry (i believe it was written before 9/11 but my point still stands - the genre was on the decline and 9/11 was the major cultural event that hastened the decline).
maybe i am a curmudgeon - almost every generation of country music has had its own âcountry music is not what it used to beâ anthem, but i really think something distinct happened with 9/11.
Can confirm. Alan Jackson and Toby Keith, the blacklisting of Dixie Chicks, literally the only singer I can think of that ever spoke out against anything from 2001-2010 was Johnny Cash. Iâd also say that the uber-patriotic stance lead to the shiny, vapid County BoyÂŽ nonsense that lead to so many of the solo artists all sounding and looking the same.
Johnny cash wrote an entire album about the destruction of Indigenous lands and of Indigenous people, Kris Kristofferson has been an activist most of his career working closely with the UFM, Woody Guthrie was a social justice advocate and union activist, Dolly Parton has tackled explicitly feminist issues even in the 60s and has been an avid supporter of her lgbt fans, Willie Nelson made Farm Aid to try and help farmers in danger of losing their farms due to mortgages keep them and is also an avid supporter of LGBT rights as well as marijuana legalization, Lorettea Lynn wrote about birth control in the 70s and had her song banned, i could go on!
When in the correct hands, country music is a powerful medium, but post 9/11 itâs been handed off to apathetic white men who have turned it into the most useless genre of music out there.
I think about this post a lot for some reason.
1000% accurate and spot on, op. Music Row has always been The Man, but it definitely got worse post-9/11.
Loretta Lynn was writing about the glories of the birth control pill in the 60s. That shit wouldnât pass muster today. But there are some bright spots, even if they are labeled âalternativeâ country. This has been your Nashvillean PSA for the day.

I am 22 years old, and studying Environmental Health at a university that is prohibitively expensive for many, in a society where this degree means the difference between poverty and middle class.
Today my deeply conservative professor again told me about this area, where I grew up, and how, as a teenager he would go catch catfish from his local stream and cook them for dinner. His nostalgia is hard to swallow, especially when my childhood memories of the same area were of being told not to eat the fish (too many PCBs, too dangerous) in my local stream, and not to touch the water in the creeks up north, where they ran electric orange with acid mine drainage.Â
I am so angry listening to the nostalgia of those complicit. My family members, growing up on the family land, telling me of how when they were young the grouse grew thick on the ground, wondering angrily where theyâd all gone while at the same time telling me of their uncleâs clearcutting, their bagging of grouse for sport, season after season.
I am so angry listening to the nostalgia of those complicit. Of those who wax remorseful about the yearly trout run in Lake Erie, where the fishing industry has been shut down for the greater part of 30 years as a hazard of human health.
I am so angry listening to the farmers, whose families settled here hundreds of years ago, complain that the rains donât come so regularly anymore, complain about all these restrictions the scientists are putting on them, and then return to vote for a man who withdrew from the Paris Agreement.
I am so angry listening to my father complaining that the government is a ânanny stateâ for mandating that new buildings use efficient lightbulbs. I am so angry that he has bought into the lie that because he recycles, but still votes for tax breaks and reduced regulation for the coal and steel plants I grew up surrounded by, that he exempts himself from this destruction. That he looks down on me for studying climate science, and being âmanipulated into doomsday theories,â even as the floods and droughts and storm damage reported to his insurance agency are becoming more frequent every year.
I am so tired of being told, âHere, this is your inheritance, isnât it a shame?â by people who tell me of the golden days, before we lived in a rotting landscape, yet turn around and support corporations as individuals, who sell their plots for fracking platforms, who complain when their taxes go towards mitigating their own sewage pollution, who rage at science trying to ârestrict industryâ and who donât see the irony in saying that business regulation is âkilling the common manâ as water and soil and air is poisoned around us, as the science comes in, again and again and again, saying; this is killing us.
I am so tired of my elders telling me, âThis is your inheritance. Isnât it a shame?â
We know better. We deserve better. Please vote.
