Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 10 「Boundless Passion」
After the bar’s closing hours—
Einsatz: Everyone, do you have your beverages?
Night: Yep!
Alto: I have mine!
Ruma: Nobel, please do the honours.
Nobel: This may be rather arrogant but—
Let’s toast in celebration of the success of our jazz band. —Cheers.
Everyone: Cheers!
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Night: That was our best show yet! It’s a shame that it has to end here.
Ruma: It was truly an enjoyable experience. I could really feel that so-called “groove”.
Einsatz: The final number of guests exceeded 140% of the bar’s capacity. There were even those that watched whilst standing.
Old Barkeeper: It’s been years since the last time we were that busy. It’s all thanks to you guys.
—Oops, I’ve already emptied my glass. Darn, I’m going to end up drinking more than I intended to tonight.
Night: If you don’t mind could I use your shaker? I’d like to make something too!
Old Barkeeper: Oh? A climber like yourself knows how to bartend too?
Night: Oh…a-ahaha, it’s just a side job I do. Could you keep this a secret please?
Old Barkeeper: Of course. Show me what you’ve got.
Night: Okay!
Ruma: You’ve been working hard too, sir. —That reminds me, did I happen to see you speaking with someone just before the venue closed?
Einsatz: There were multiple guests present. They differed from any of the regularly visiting customers. Who are those people?
Old Barkeeper: Ahh yes, them. Those were people from the jazz bands that used to play here.
Ruma & Ein: !
Old Barkeeper: There’s someone I was hoping to speak directly to about that matter but…it seems he’s nowhere to be found?
Alto: Nobel-san is missing. He was here just a moment ago…I’ll go look for him.
Old Barkeeper: I’ll join you.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: Nobel-san! So this is where you’ve been.
Nobel: Doctor…sir, you’re here as well.
Old Barkeeper: What’re you doing out here?
Nobel: I’m just taking some time to reflect. Our shows were a success but because of me, we had to take a detour.
I’m half pleased yet half sorrowful too…I feel somewhat ashamed to show my face in front of everyone.
Alto: Don’t say that. There’s nothing for you to be ashamed of, Nobel-san.
Old Barkeeper: That’s right…before you go feeling all embarrassed, I’d like for you to hear me out.
Nobel: …?
Old Barkeeper: It looks like those fellows that were about to retire are making a comeback.
Nobel: !
Old Barkeeper: They said they couldn’t keep quiet after hearing music like that. You’ve fired those grandpas up.
Those kids stopped by to listen after catching wind of your shows too. It was giving them motivation not to be defeated.
It sounds like they plan on stopping by to play from time to time…you brought them back.
Nobel: What does that mean for the bar…?
Old Barkeeper: There’s no need for it to close down. I plan to keep it running for a while to come.
Alto: Really…!?
Nobel: —As a fan of jazz, I cannot express my gratitude for your decision enough.
Old Barkeeper: Well…this is a hobby after all, so I can’t call it quits during all this fun.
Alto: This is wonderful news…!
Nobel: …Certainly. Nothing could be greater than this.
Doctor, I want to express my gratitude to you again. I couldn’t have saved this bar without all of you with me.
Alto: I haven’t done a thing. This is the result of all the effort you and the rest of the band put in.
Nobel: Thank you for your kind words. This ordeal has turned out to be a wonderful experience for me.
—-I thought I’d been in operation for quite a long time but it turns out there’s still a lot I must learn. I have a long way to go.
Alto: ! A long time…
(Just how old is Nobel-san…? How did he come to this point…?)
Einsatz: Master Nobel, Doctor, this is where you have been?
Alto: Ein-san!
Einsatz: You were absent so I came to collect you. Master Ruma says he would like to play one last time.
Nobel: Oh, that does sound nice. Sorry for the inconvenience, Ein. Let’s go, Doctor.
Alto: Ah, okay!
Nobel: I’d like for you to listen once more too. To the results of our trial and error. To music they’ve conducted…
To the groove that suspires in this wonderful place, together.

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 9 「A Melody to Relish In」
Nobel: —Thus, our final rehearsal begins.
Our time is running out. It’s not long at all until our final scheduled show.
But I want to improve, even if only a little. I’ll teach them everything I know, so that they too may comply to the best of their abilities—
…Truthfully, there are parts I invested too much passion into. If you were to ask if this resembled the usual me, I’d say it doesn’t in the slightest.
But there’s no problem with that. It’s fine, isn’t it? This is all in accordance with my “kokoro”...
⋆ ♦ ⋆
A few days laterー
Alto: …The day of their last show has finally arrived.
Old Barkeeper: It has. I’m truly indebted to them.
Alto: Could I ask you something? After today, what will happen to this bar…?
Old Barkeeper: Hmm, like I’ve mentioned, I’m running this bar as a hobby. It doesn’t have to stay open but…
Now isn't the time to come to a conclusion. Let’s save it for after today’s show to think about, hm?
Alto: …! Right! I think that’s a good idea…!
Old Barkeeper: I wonder how he’s doing? It looks like he’s enjoying himself playing, doesn’t he?
Alto: Are you talking about Nobel-san? Yes, he does. When he’s here, he seems a little different from his usual calm self…
I can see a bit more childishness in him. He really loves jazz, doesn’t he?
Old Barkeeper: Certainly…that’s exactly why he couldn't make any compromises with his own performance.
Alto: ! …You noticed it too?
Old Barkeeper: I’ve seen my fair share of musicians. I can get a good idea of what they’re thinking after a show just by looking at them.
I was concerned about what would happen if he couldn’t shake off his doubts before the end…but it looks like my worries weren’t necessary.
Alto: I feel the same.
Old Barkeeper: It’s rare to find someone with such a deep appreciation for jazz these days. Especially when it comes to androids.
Alto: Nobel-san has been a regular here for a while now, right?
Old Barkeeper: I’ve known him for an awfully long time…I’m incredibly grateful to know that there’s someone out there with an attachment to this bar.
Well then, they should be starting soon. Let’s enjoy the show.
Alto: Yes, let’s…!
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: —May I contradict myself one last time?
Einsatz: Contradict?
Nobel: Jazz…and especially live performances don’t need to be perfect once a certain standard has been surpassed.
Ruma: My my, that certainly is quite the contradiction.
Nobel: The condition of the night, the mood of the audience and the band’s composition and instruments create slight changes.
Music changes its form like a living being. This may come across as strange but the fluctuations of it are often a welcome occurrence if anything.
Night: Ah, I think I understand! For comparison, performances at Babel are always live streamed.
Of course, our performances are polished to perfection but some of the most enjoyment comes from little arrangements or ad libs.
Nobel: How impressive, Night. When examining both Babel and this place, they certainly do feel similar.
It’s especially characteristic of jazz considering its origins of popular music that was played in bars and entertainment districts.
Ruma: Oh, is that so?
Nobel: There’s a number of different opinions on the matter. Whatever the case may be, I enjoy music such as jazz that adopts that sort of crude atmosphere.
Especially the jumps, the variation…the way it engulfs the audience and creates a singular groove. That is what jazz is.
Einsatz: —I see. I will update my data related to jazz music.
Nobel: I am truly grateful to all of you. You’ve accommodated my greed and improved your performance skills beyond perfection.
So from this point forward, you’re free. Without worrying about reenacting the classics of the past, without getting caught up on exquisitely handling the instruments—
Let’s have fun. Let’s enjoy ourselves. Allow the melody to show you the way.

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 8 「Enthusiasm and Egotism」
Alto: Improving your performance? But I think you put on incredible shows…
Nobel: I agree with you. I’m very pleased with them.
However, that satisfaction is exactly what leaves me unable to suppress the desire for “more”.
—Do you remember why I proposed the idea of a stand-in to the barkeeper in the first place?
Alto: The usual bands that played had stopped coming by due to retiring or not having the time…
Nobel: That’s right. They have their own paths to follow. Their decision to choose a different stage or to put down their instruments are all ones that I must respect.
…But I must also acknowledge this greediness of mine. I haven't been able to snuff out my hopes of them returning after hearing us play.
Alto: !
Nobel: At the end of the day, we’re nothing more than a stand-in. Our performances at that bar must come to an end someday.
But what of those who heard our music? Or even someone who is struck with inspiration, won’t they please pick up those instruments?
…Before it's too late for that bar. This is what has been on my mind.
Alto: You want to put on an even better performance than before to motivate them…is that what you're saying?
Nobel: Yes. This is all the work of my ego. I don’t want that bar to disappear. I want those players to return.
I’m unable to abandon these hopes of mine… This is why our performance must improve
Alto: Nobel-san…
Nobel: But I would be placing a burden on them if I were to bring this to light. I can’t ask for more from them, not when they’re already lending me their assistance.
Alto: I don’t think that’s the case.
Nobel: Doctor…?
Alto: I think it’s okay to depend on everyone more. Your own judgement is important too, but it’s causing you some trouble, isn’t it?
Nobel: But…won’t I seem like a child if I ask for more and more when they’re already doing their best?
Alto: It’s okay to be childish too. That’s just how serious you are about this.
Let’s think about it from a different perspective. Everyone is already involved in music-related activities, right? Night in particular is even here to learn more.
Do you think they would turn their noses up if you were to suggest improving the quality of your music?
Nobel: …Now that I’m thinking about it logically, no I don’t think so.
Alto: Right?
Nobel: Fufu…what a surprise. If what you say is true then my reluctance wasn’t needed at all.
I thought I was being wise with my decision, but it seems that isn’t the case. I still have some maturing to do, don't I?
Alto: That’s alright. Let’s forget about prudence and go ask the others for more help.
Nobel: Very well…you’ll come with me, won’t you? It’d feel rather embarrassing asking them on my own.
Alto: Of course!
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: —So this is what I’ve been deliberating.
…What are your opinions? I’m fully aware of how selfish this is of me. The decision is your own to make.
Ruma: I see, I see. Very well then, we’ll follow along.
Einsatz: As you wish, Master Nobel.
Night: You can leave it to us. We’ll stick by you as much as you need!
Nobel: You will…? You were so quick to agree. Are you sure you’re certain?
Ruma: But of course. Truthfully, I had been waiting for you to say something.
Jazz is a pure passion of yours. It’s a pleasure that you can enjoy without having to put up a front of formality…
So I think you could do with being more self-indulgent about this.
Nobel: Losing the formalities…? Do I usually seem like that?
Ruma: You are a master at behaving in a way that conceals it, of course. Well, we aren’t long-time friends for nothing, haha.
Einsatz: It is my pleasure and top priority to ensure that Master Nobel is always enjoying a pleasant and supreme performance.
No matter the circumstance, please command me. Without fail, I will support you.
Nobel: …Thank you, I’m glad to hear you say that. Night, what do you think? Burdening you further after you’ve come to help would be rather…
Night: Our leader says that “perfection” is always another step away.
Nobel: Oh…?
Night: Even if you’re at 100%, you shouldn't feel satisfied. There’s always more exploration and improvement to be done.
That’s how you achieve the “real thing”...because of that, I’m delighted to hear your suggestion, Nobel.
We may only be an impromptu band but we’re taking another step forward. There’s nothing better than that!
Nobel: —You have all given me endless help.
Very well then, some additional training will be in order. I’ll be putting an end to my restraint too. Is that alright?
Thank you. I’ll let the barkeeper know the news too. We’ll need to borrow a practice venue, after all.
…Let’s endeavour to create some incredible music. With the group we have here, I’m sure it will be possible.
Alto: (Thank goodness…it seems that Nobel-san was able to overcome himself.)
(I’m excited to see the final product…!)

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 7 「His Worries」
A few days later—
Regular Visitor 1: —Tonight was another lovely show.
Regular Visitor 2: I’ve seen that man on the piano in here often but who knew he could play too…
Old Barkeeper: Thank you for today. You’re getting better and better by the day.
Nobel: No thanks is necessary. It’s an honour to have you listen to us.
……
Alto: Nobel-san…?
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: Um, Nobel-san. Could I talk to you?
Nobel: Yes?
Alto: …I was wondering if there was something bothering you?
Nobel: !
Alto: I apologise if I’ve misunderstood but you seem like you’re feeling agitated after your performances?
Nobel: —Oh, that’s what you’re referring to. Well, taking the stage at my favourite jazz bar just gets me into high spirits.
Alto: High…spirits?
Nobel: Be that as it may, I can’t be so blatant about my cheeriness, now can I? Therefore, I do my best to remain calm, but…
I wasn’t able to fool you, it seems. Perhaps my facial expressions slip through easier than I thought.
Alto: Are you sure? Your expression made it seem like there was something troubling you…
Nobel: That’s truly all there is to it. Anyhow, it’s gotten dark. Let’s be on our way home now.
Alto: Ah, wait, please! …High spirits? Is that really it…?
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: It’s minimal—not enough to refer to as discomfort. Merely a pinch of flavour…
I have a rough understanding of what’s missing. Whether or not I fill it in won’t have any effect on the overall composition.
But……nevermind…
Is it purely egotism for me to think this? For their playing to be magnificent, I…
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: …
Ruma: Doctor-kun, Doctor-kun.
Alto: Ruma-san. What’s the matter?
Ruma: I won’t beat around the bush, there’s a favour I’d like to ask of you…
Could you talk to Nobel for me?
Alto: Eh…!
Ruma: He’s been brooding over something ever since we began putting on performances. Wouldn’t you agree, Ein?
Einsatz: Yes. I have noticed that his response time is slightly delayed and his expression is somewhat gloomier.
It is a peculiar instance of there being a task that he cannot resolve within his own means…it is terribly unusual.
Alto: I knew I noticed something going on…! But why are you coming to me for help?
Ruma: Sadly, it seems that he’s set on hiding it from Ein and I in particular. He won’t show any weak spots at all.
Some things are all the more difficult to talk about with one's companions, so he may open up if you’re the one to ask.
Alto: Are you sure? I’ve already tried asking him but he shook me off…
Ruma: He isn’t cruel enough to respond in silence if he sees how truly worried he’s making you.
…Though, there’s no denying his secretiveness. Even so, if it’s you, I’m sure it will be fine.
Alto: —I understand. I’ll try asking Nobel-san again.
Ruma: Thank you. We’ll leave him in your hands, Doctor-kun.
Einsatz: Thank you kindly for your cooperation.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: Nobel-san!
Nobel: Hello there, Doctor. Was there something you needed?
Alto: I’m sorry to bring this on you so suddenly but I’ve had that quick conversation we shared after the performance weighing on my mind…
Were you really telling the truth when you said that expression was the result of your high spirits? I find myself doubting that.
Nobel: ……
Alto: I’m sorry if it’s none of my business but on the chance that something is troubling you, I’d like for you to be honest with me,
You’ve helped me out a lot, Nobel-san. I mean, just the other day there was the time we were out shopping…
Would you let me repay that kindness, even just a little?
Nobel: ……Fufu.
I had been burying this in my chest so as to not worry you but it seems I’ve only added to your concern…what a foolish thing for me of all people to do.
…Well then, will you listen to me? Though, you may let out a laugh…
Alto: I swear I won’t laugh!
Nobel: Thank you. —Truthfully, it’s in regards to the shows we’ve been putting on…
I’m contemplating whether there’s room for another step of improvement.

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 6 「1st Performance」
Nobel: I knew those two days would fly by in the blink of an eye.
Our results are magnificent. Despite only being a stand-in band, I believe that we are polished enough not to be unbefitting of taking the stage.
They followed my guidance well. As the one who proposed this idea, I cannot thank them enough.
But…I, of all people…
I must abandon the idea. Anything more than this would be uncouth.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Old Barkeeper: Well, well…
Nobel: …What do you think?
Old Barkeeper: I’m impressed. To think you’re already this polished after only a few days.
Night: Thank you!
Ruma: If we’ve earned the barkeeper’s approval, I can feel a sense of peace of mind for the time being.
Nobel: We’ll be performing tonight then…
Old Barkeeper: Like we agreed, I’ll be leaving this to the group of you. I’ll be counting on you.
Nobel: —Of course. We will strive to meet perfection.
Einsatz: You may entrust in us.
Alto: Good luck. I’ll be cheering you on…!
Nobel: I’d like to express my gratitude to you as well, Doctor. I couldn’t have formed this band without you.
Alto: It’s too early to be saying that. We still haven't reached the finish line yet.
Nobel: Fufu…I suppose you’re right. In that case, I hope you’ll continue watching over us until the end.
I wonder how the jazz we play will resonate with the crowd…
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Ruma: It appears we have quite the audience.
Night: So this is the vibe that nightfall brings…! This atmosphere is amazing! I bet I’ll be hit with some inspiration…!
Einsatz: Currently, the number of guests is at slightly less than 70% of the bar’s capacity. As the bar has only just opened, I predict that the number will increase even further.
According to the owner, many of the regular customers have come by due to the reopening of the stage.
Nobel: It certainly seems that way …We’ll be beginning soon. Are any of you feeling nervous?
Night: Not at all! In fact, I’m itching to get out there and play!
Ruma: I’m not feeling any worries either. Let's enjoy ourselves, why don’t we?
Einsatz: I am in prime condition. I am ready to perform at any moment.
Nobel: That’s wonderful to hear. It’s precisely what I’d expect from the three of you.
—Perhaps…if I was nervous…
Ruma: Nobel? Did you say something?
Nobel: …It’s nothing. Now then, shall we begin?
⋆ ♦ ⋆
After the performance—
Alto: Nobel-san…! That was an incredible performance!
Nobel: Thank you.
Old Barkeeper: What a show that was. Our regulars with an ear for music were pleased too. Who knew you had this much skill in you.
Nobel: For a long time, all I’ve had is my knowledge. I couldn’t have made use of it without the help of my fellow members.
Night: Being on stage was so much fun! Nobel’s amazing piano playing led the way for us!
Alto: (That’s right…as a top climber, Night has a veritable talent for music. I can’t think of anyone better to have come join us.)
(But Nobel-san's expressiveness is simply beyond compare. I had no idea he was this incredible…!)
Old Barkeeper: At this rate, it looks like we'll be able to hang in there for a while longer. Keep up the good work.
Nobel: We will……
Alto: Nobel-san…?
(What’s going on? He seems upset…)

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 5 「Enthusiastic Leadership」
Old Barkeeper: My my, you whipped up a jazz band in no time…
Nobel: Each one of them is a member I know I can rely on…what do you think?
Old Barkeeper: I can’t express my gratitude enough. With everything you’re doing for us, we won’t be so quick to shut down either.
Alto: So then…!
Old Barkeeper: I’ll entrust the stage to you for a while. I’ll be opening up the bar in two days.
In the meantime, feel free to make use of the equipment around here. Practice as much as you want.
Night: Seriously!? Isn’t this great, guys!?
Ruma: More than anything. Although, this is where the challenge begins. Let’s do our best not to lose steam.
Einsatz: I will endeavour to meet your expectations.
Nobel: Thank you, sir. We’ll take you up on that offer.
Well then…our first performance is two nights away.
Let’s proceed with rehearsals until the day of the performance in order to improve our skills as much as possible. I’ll be counting on all of you.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: Let’s focus on basic songs, such as covers of standard numbers. Everyone starts out by imitating others, after all.
I’ve compiled a list of songs that can be played by a quartet of a piano, cello, saxophone and a trumpet to choose from.
Night: Sounds good to me. Let’s try expressing a classic piece with our own spin to it!
Nobel: I presume you've already installed the guide to playing your respective instruments but I’ll start off by sharing some quick advice.
Ruma. The cello is a pillar for low notes, but in jazz the theory of the instrument differs from its classical playing techniques.
One method foregoes the use of the bow and involves playing directly with your hands. I’ll share more with you later.
Ruma: Is that so? I have a feeling we’ll be able to pull off a rather enjoyable performance.
Nobel: Ein, Night. To begin, amongst all wind instruments, the way you move your lips and control your breathing are both crucial components.
Einsatz: Master Nobel, may I confirm something with you in regards to that?
Nobel: Yes?
Einsatz: As androids, we do not respire. How are we to go about drawing breaths?
Night: …Oh.
Alto: Oh…
Ruma: Hahaha, we certainly overlooked that part.
Nobel: …Hm. It would seem that I had gotten so caught up in forming the band that it completely slipped my mind.
Night: A-Ahaha…I was so excited that I totally forgot all about that too…
Nobel: Respiratory functions certainly aren’t necessary for an android but there is a sort of pseudo breathing that comes with the ability to speak.
Let’s begin by learning to take control of that. In fact, we may be able to create an exquisite performance that doesn’t require breathing for the most part.
Night: Understood. I’ll try my best!
Einsatz: I will listen attentively.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: …
Ruma: Nobel, how should I play this part?
Nobel: Try reducing the pressure with which you touch the strings to create a delicate sound. Like a small bird perched lightly on a tree branch—
Einsatz: Master Nobel, please elaborate further on my question once more.
Nobel: Oh of course, the movement of the fingers is rather hectic here. Try envisioning an ocean breeze. Play with the thought of waves crashing and retreating—
Night: Nobel, do you have a second? I’m not sure about the flow in the next part…
Nobel: Ah, this section is rather hard, isn’t it? Even former trumpeters have shown a variety of interpretations of it but—
Alto: (...Nobel-san really does have a talent for teaching.)
(Come to think of it, when we first met, he taught me a great deal of things while I was repairing Neon…)
(As a dark master, his social circle is pretty small—but if that’s truly the case, how did he become so good at teaching?)
Nobel: Doctor?
Alto: Ah, don’t mind me! Actually, I was wondering if there’s anything I can help with?
Nobel: Hmm, would you be kind enough to listen to us play? I’d like to hear your unreserved opinions.
Alto: Sure thing!
(I shouldn’t worry about that stuff right now. Nobel-san seems to be having a lot of fun, after all.)
(He really does love jazz, doesn’t he…)

The next day
Night: Pardon the intrusion. Wow, so this is your lab, huh…!
Nobel: Welcome, Night. I know this was sudden but I hope you can make yourself feel at home.
Ruma: Let’s begin by giving you some time to settle in. Ein, could you bring him some tea?
Einsatz: Understood. It will be a short wait, Night-san.
Night: T-That’s fine! —So uh, you wanted me to play the trumpet in your jazz band, right?
Alto: Yes, thank you for coming by. No matter how much thought I gave it, I couldn’t imagine anyone that would be a better fit than you, Night.
Night: Ahaha, I'm honoured! I’m glad you decided to rely on me.
Nobel: But…are you completely sure this is okay? You’re rather busy, yes?
Ruma: Certainly. Not only must you deal with the duties of a top climber, but there's also that bar you manage too…
Night: That won’t be a problem. I plan on gathering information too so it’ll be like killing two birds with one stone.
Alto: Gathering information?
Night: To be honest, I’ve been intrigued by jazz for sometime now and I’ve been thinking about taking the time to properly learn more about it.
Helping you guys out also gives me the opportunity to actually experience it for myself, so Kite and Light were more than happy for me to come and lend a hand!
Nobel: Is that so? In that case, I’m sure putting your skills into practice with a performance will prove to be wonderful material.
Night: Plus, you guys have been so much help to us so I’ve been wanting to return the favour in some way.
Ruma: Hahaha, “return the favour,” you say? That sounds like a very delightful offer. It would be wonderful to rely on you.
Alto: You’re really helping us out here…! We’re counting on you, Night.
Night: Of course!
Einsatz: Thank you for waiting. Here you are.
Night: Thank you, it looks delicious…anyway, how are we going about this? Where should we get started?
Nobel: Let’s begin with inputting. It may be easy to remember the methods of a performance by installing a program, however…
More than anything, I want you to understand the delightfulness of jazz. Let’s begin by wiping our minds of troublesome matters, and experience the pure enjoyment that jazz masterpieces have to offer.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Night: …
They were all incredible…! Especially the first song!
I mean, the way it jumped from that immersive piano solo into a melody in an instant! I had no idea there were songs this wonderful out there…!
Nobel: It’s one of the most famed piano jazz songs of them all. The timbre of a piano played by the hands of an illustrious figure has the grandeur and stability akin to that of an ancient tree.
Ruma: I found that this song was to my liking. It was brimming with joy and elation. It felt to me like celebrating the first steps of a new journey.
Nobel: I completely understand what you mean. I’m sure those from far in the past would associate this song with the scenery they’d see from the window of a railway train.
Einsatz: …
Nobel: Ein. Did you have a favourite song?
Einsatz: …My apologies, I was analysing the sound patterns. I aim to understand the roles of the instruments within the composition and to formulate the logic of performing.
However, without listening through the lenses of analysis…this song, for example, exceeded my expectations with its complexity and intricacy.
Nobel: I agree, the timbre of this song is quite complex. Despite that, it carries a feeling of nostalgia and sentimentality, like touching an old scar.
Ein, to be able to connect with this further proves that your “kokoro” is developing wonderfully.
Einsatz: It’s an honour to receive your praise.
Alto: (Nobel-san is full of energy. He must be having fun…)
Nobel: Now then, gentlemen. So far, we’ve delved into the famous songs—or the “standard numbers” as they’re also called…
Moving forward, I’d like for you to listen to a selection that’s a little more geared towards the fanatics. Is that alright?
Now then, let’s proceed. Focus and listen closely—

Nobel: —This suggestion is a bizarre one by my standards.
I know an adequate amount about jazz but actually performing it is a whole different ordeal. I couldn’t dream of comparing to the experts that came before me.
Why would I suggest something like that? —Or rather, the case is that I couldn’t stop myself from suggesting it…
This must be another effect of my ”kokoro”...regardless, I couldn’t just turn my back on that bar.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: —And that’s the situation.
Einsatz: You require a stand-in band to perform at a jazz bar…?
Ruma: I see, I see, so this is the dilemma you’re in?
Nobel: I plan to perform too, of course. However, this isn’t something I can do on my own so I’d like to seek out some other members.
Alto: Since there aren’t any other players, we’d need to start entirely from scratch.
Nobel: Indeed, it would take quite some time. I completely understand how selfish this request of mine is, but could I ask for your assistance?
Einsatz: As you wish.
Ruma: But of course. It sounds rather exciting.
Alto: Y-You decided so quickly…!
Nobel: Are you certain? I believe it’ll be a rather time consuming commitment. I’m sure you both have other business to attend to…
Einsatz: It is my duty to carry out my Master’s wishes. Your proposal takes priority over all other tasks.
Ruma: This bar means a lot to you, yes? Then of course we’d lend you a hand.
Nobel: …Thank you. In that case, let’s begin working out a plan.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: Here is how we’ll distribute the parts. I’ll play the piano, Ruma will take care of the cello and Ein will be in charge of the saxophone…
There’s a piano at the bar that we can borrow but we’ll need to supply the rest of the instruments ourselves. I have a good shop in mind so I suggest we source them from there.
Einsatz: Understood.
Ruma: The cello, hm? My my, are you sure I’ll be able to manage?
Nobel: No need to fret, I can input the data for anything you still need to learn. Let me have a look at my collection.
We’ve already settled the three of us, but…hmm…
Alto: Is there a problem?
Nobel: No, it’s fine. Just to avoid any loose ends, I’d like to have someone to play the trumpet but…
Ruma: We’ll need another person then, won’t we? Hmm…what about Doctor-kun?
Alto: Huh!? But I don’t have any experience with the trumpet…!
Ruma: As I thought, it must be rather difficult. I apologise for my unreasonable request.
Nobel: Humans such as yourself have to learn how to play an instrument from the very beginning. We couldn’t possibly ask you to go to that extent for us.
Although, that begs the question. Who could we ask…?
Ruma: Do you have anyone in mind?
Nobel: …Honestly, no one at all. At times such as these, I’m reminded of how small my circle of friends is.
Ruma: Such is the life of us dark masters. The scarcity of our companions has been starting to get to me.
Nobel: That's a hurtful thing to hear.
Alto: A trumpet player, huh…? We’d need someone that’s familiar with jazz and has a strong knack for music…
They’d also need to be skilled enough to improvise and keep up with the rest of you…
—Oh? Maybe him…
Nobel: Have you thought of someone?
Alto: Yes, someone has come to mind. The only thing is, he’s very busy so it may not work out…
Well, it can’t hurt to give it a shot so I’ll try reaching out to him. Do you mind waiting a little?
Nobel: Of course not. We’ll be counting on you.

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 2 「State of the Jazz Bar」
Alto: Wow…! This place is a bar, right?
Nobel: Indeed it is. A jazz bar, to be specific.
Alto: Is it different from a regular bar? It feels a little different from STAND-ALONE’s AIR…
Nobel: There are some differences. As the name suggests, the key characteristic of a jazz bar is the jazz music that plays throughout the venue.
Naturally, they are quite particular about sound. Some bars, such as this one, play vinyl records.
Personally, I’m rather fond of records. They have a level of warmth and dimension that electronic data just can’t compare to.
Even the sound of the needle falling carries its own profoundness. Unfortunately, the number of jazz bars that aim for authenticity has dwindled frightfully over the years…
Alto: I-I see…
Nobel: Oh dear, forgive me. I didn’t mean to stray from the topic of conversation. There is one more major defining characteristic of jazz bars—
Certain bars will even show off live performances on their stages.
Alto: Live performances…!? That must be what that small stage over there is for!
Nobel: Correct. This bar is a well-known venue around here that draws in many talented performers.
Aside from being a engineer, you’re also familiar with the world of music so I think you’ll find this place to be rather inspiring.
Alto: How exciting. I haven't actually listened to much jazz music before now.
Nobel: I’m certain you’ll find it to your liking…Now then, it’s almost time for the performance. Let’s wait for the experts to take the stage.
Alto: Okay!
Nobel: …Oh? It doesn’t appear that they’re starting…
Alto: Maybe it's taking them a little longer to get ready? Let’s give them some more time.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: Hm…?
Alto: It doesn’t look like they’ll be starting anytime soon…?
???: Customers, I’m sorry to say that— Oh, it’s you. Decided to stop by, huh?
Alto: Eh…?
Nobel: Hello there, sir. Sorry to bother you.
Old Barkeeper: You’ve brought someone along with you today? What a surprise.
Nobel: This is a dependable friend of mine. I’ve been awfully eager to introduce them to this bar.
Alto: I wouldn’t go as far as to say dependable…!
Nobel: There’s no need to be so humble. You’re a truly reliable person.
Alto: T-Thank you…
Old Barkeeper: I see…so this is an important acquaintance of yours? In that case, I’m sorry about the news I have to bring you.
It’s looking like the performances are going to have to be put on hold for the time being.
Alto: What…!?
Nobel: Has something happened?
Old Barkeeper: Don’t worry, it’s not some depressing story or anything. The band that’s been performing here for all these years has been talking about retiring soon.
Nobel: Retiring…?
Old Barkeeper: You must’ve seen this coming, right? Those guys have gotten pretty old after performing all this time. They have families and grandchildren, y’know?
They think it’s about time they start taking it easy. Besides, they’ve been doing jazz for decades now.
Nobel: I see…albeit quite disappointing to hear, it’s for the best. Even so, what of the other bands? There’s younger players out there, is there not…?
Old Barkeeper: The youngsters don’t have as much free time anymore. With getting their name out there and focusing on Babel, it doesn’t look like they’d be able to fit this into their schedules.
That's why there won’t be any performances for a while. Sorry for not letting you know sooner.
Alto: I see…
Nobel: But…what will happen to this bar? Without those performers, the stage will remain desolate for who knows how long.
It may be upsetting to bring up but the absence of live performances will likely have a huge impact on your sales….
Old Barkeeper: I know…actually, I was thinking it’d be a good time to shut down soon.
Nobel: !
Old Barkeeper: I originally started off running this bar as a fun side project. I’ve never made much of a profit in the first place.
The regulars are retiring and the youngsters are busy making a name for themselves. It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to close the book on this all.
…Although, I can’t deny that it hurts too.
Nobel: …
—Sir. While I do want to respect your judgement, could I ask you to wait a little longer before setting anything in stone?
Old Barkeeper: Hm?
Nobel: Feel free to disregard my suggestion if you find it to be foolish but if it happens to catch your interest…
Alto: Nobel-san…?
Old Barkeeper: It's fine. I’d love to hear your idea.
Nobel: Thank you. In that case—
What do you think of a stand-in jazz band? I’ll take it upon myself to find the members for it.
—In fact, I’ll even perform too.

Tonight at a Jazz Bar ♦ A Quartet of Freedom and Passion | Episode 1 「Treasured Place」
Alto: Thank you for being kind enough to come shopping with me, Nobel-san…
Nobel: It’s my pleasure. It must have been fate for our paths to cross on that street corner.
Now then…you were on the hunt for some android maintenance supplies, yes?
Alto: That’s right, I’m looking to buy a new portable tool. If it isn’t any trouble, would you mind giving me some recommendations?
Nobel: I’d be glad to. As an engineer, I too am curious about what sort of choice you’ll be drawn towards.
Alto: H-Hearing you say that is rather nerve wracking…
Nobel: Fufu. Now then, shall we be on our way?
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: Over here I should be able to find…wait, what? I could’ve sworn this was the right section…
Nobel: What seems to be the matter?
Alto: The multi-tool parts that used to be here are gone. They were from this manufacturer…
Nobel: The model is two years old, yes? It was quite the commendable creation, that’s for certain. The balance of its features is better than even that of today’s work.
Hm…like you said, they’re entirely out of stock. Perhaps they were removed due to being an outdated model?
Alto: Oh well, I’ll just have to settle for a different tool. I hope I can find something that works similarly…
Nobel: …Oh, wait a moment. I have an idea.
Alto: Huh?
Nobel: Let’s go elsewhere. The place I have in mind may very well have the product you’re looking for.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: —It’s here! This was the specification I was looking for!
Nobel: I’m glad you found it. I had a hunch you’d be able to find some older products still in good condition here.
Alto: I never would have imagined there’d be such a well-stocked shop hidden away like this…are you quite familiar with this place?
Nobel: If you wish to open up a world of new options, it’s best to have numerous stores that you like to frequent.
—Besides, in certain situations, it’s necessary to acquire tools by means that cannot be traced.
Suspicious Shopkeeper: Hehehe…we’re always finding ourselves indebted to you, sir. It’s a give and take relationship, wouldn’t you say?
Alto: I-I see…
(Th…this seems a little dodgy…)
Nobel: While we’re here, why don’t I introduce you to some other stores that may be of help to you? Do you think you could spare the time for that?
Alto: Absolutely! …Ah, but I better call home first.
Nobel: Go right ahead. I’ll leave a few words from myself too.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Nobel: Ahh, the day has simply flown by, hasn’t it?
Alto: Nobel-san, you really know a whole lot of great stores…! With your help, I was able to get my hands on an incredible amount of goods.
There were limited parts I had been in search of for ages and tools from manufacturers I haven’t heard of but are easy to get the hang of…
Nobel: It was my pleasure. High quality tools are found by handling them yourself, not by fussing over a manufacturer or model year.
Although, we did end up doing an awful lot of walking. What do you say to taking a short break? There’s another superb establishment that I have in mind.
Alto: A break…?
Nobel: It’s a place that I’m incredibly eager to share with you. I’m certain it will be to your tastes.
⋆ ♦ ⋆
Alto: Oh my…!
Nobel: Fortunately, it seems that their opening hours have just begun. Allow me to formally introduce you, Doctor.
This is my favourite spot—a serene locale seemingly stopped in time amongst the bustle of Tokyo.
