This past summer we got to be in the audience when William Shatner came to visit our local comic con equivalent and speak on this. At his age he was highly present and well spoken throughout the session. He was energetic with everyone who came up to ask questions, engaging with them regardless of how many times he likely heard the same Star Trek themed queries. At the end he spoke about this experience and about how space is dark and vast and frightening but behind him was precious life-one we've largely taken for granted and not valued enough as witnessed by the ever changing climate. It was a powerful message you could tell some were moved by while others were uncomfortable hearing. This was their Captain Kirk, a space explorer telling them space wasn't worth the cost. It's a bitter truth, but for as glorious and wondrous as space travel sounds, it is not worth the cost of our planet's future.
