At the heart of the book is Odessa’s growth. She begins as the “wrong princess” with little skill or purpose, and Perry wisely lets her stumble, train, and bleed her way into competence rather than gifting her instant power. Her dynamic with the Guardian, brooding, scarred, and hiding a devastating secret, is slow to build but deeply rewarding. The romance never overwhelms the plot, instead working in tandem with themes of identity, trust, and the costs of love in a brutal world.
