Aim/The Angel and A Canticle for Leibowitz

🚨 Semi-lethal spoilers for A Canticle for Leibowitz.

"A Canticle for Leibowitz" is a 1959 short story cycle about a sect of Catholic monks whose role is to preserve relics of knowledge in the nuclear apocalypse (but by doing so also doom the future yadda yadda). In the third story in the collection/cycle there is a older woman with a six legged dog. She is an unsettling figure and is petitioning the head of this order of monks to baptise her second head (did I mention this occurs post nuclear apocalypse). However, a second nuclear crisis occurs and in the blast the woman appears to die and a new, young, feral, voice is heard speaking from the head. While the world falls to ruins again, this new being skips forth.

So when I read this part I was like "Oh Cathoic-vibes apocalypse AND a six legged dog? Is this a Reference?" Anyone else able to comment?

For a well read Catholic sci-fi writer, A Canticle for Leibowitz doesn't seem impossible for Tazmuir.

i adore commander wake. this is not a meme i unironically adore and somewhat admire this woman. like she is up there with some of my all time favorite indigenous female characters. people often call her crazy or insane and she probably is to a degree but i can't help but love that about her.

she dedicated her entire life and death to killing god. she almost did it, too, is the thing. it's not that she tremendously failed– she was absolutely almost successful. she was ruthless. she's revered. BoE has shrines of her in their offices. she looked god in the face and demanded he say her full name, thus speaking their shared ancestral language– a language he almost entirely wiped out. she wouldn’t let him get rid of it that easy. she charged him with genocide. there is no such thing as a house civilian to her, similarly how there's no such way to be a settler on stolen land and also a civilian.

saying this as mildly as possible but the anti ai posting tenor on this website (not last post, but in general - i have been biting my tongue for a long long time) is one generally oriented towards a maximal amount of self-righteousness. in my experience, self-righteousness only ever produces martyrdom and a punitive desire for "justice" that can never quite be quenched. none of it is actually conducive towards good politics around the matter in question, least of all ai, which is frankly poorly understood and thought about on here. a little more compassion and thoughtfulness and a little less solipsistic self-absorption perhaps is in order.

even if you insist that everybody ought to be producing thoughtful, insightful, attentive readings of all the art they interact with—which might be nice, but just isn't something that most people are trained to do—the people I follow who call themselves "monsterfuckers" are producing some of the most thoughtful, interesting takes on how various works of art portray ideas about the human and inhuman, self and other, control and lack thereof, sex and power, violence and violation, etc., that I have seen.

like why are you convinced that a moniker transparently owning that somebody's engagement with a certain work of art is impacted by horniness, must mean that their engagement is therefore facile or stupid or whatever? why should erotic or sexual arousal or fascination be antithetical to analysis somehow? that sounds arbitrary

i'm normally not of the opinion that tlt needs an adaptation, because (uncommon for most modern sff authors) muir is exceptionally skilled at shaping the texture of the prose to suit the discourse of the individual narrative, and i do think that unless you have exceptionally thoughtful directors who really think about an adaptation as a translation not just of what is said and what is done but all of the contained narratological devices (which we see time and time again that very few people who make adaptations are!) a lot will be lost.

THAT BEING SAID. i think if it had to have a screen adaptation it would have to be animated. the color grading and line weight could be a good reference to the different shapes of the text: bolder colors and thinner lines for GtN, more mezieres and legend of the galactic heroes; textured lines and painterly backgrounds and more somber tones, very magnetic rose and vhd bloodlust for HtN; the desaturated military semirealism style you see in oshii's works (particularly jin-roh and the patlabor films) for NtN; and there are strong arguments for multiple directions for the john flashbacks (though i'm most compelled by a broader and brighter color palette). AND there's so much you can do with the character design. 'alecto looking like a different type of animated character, an elfen lied lucy beside these figures with more detailed features' (facial features feel exceptionally important, given that although muir is weak as fuck at describing her brown characters, what little she describes emphasizes eye shapes, lip shapes, nose shapes, cheekbones, etc) has been a conception of this series in my head for years now.

obviously the challenge would be that western animation directors have a very xenophobic aversion to the animation techniques developed and advanced in anime which makes adult sff animation very bad at characters standing around and talking (i am thinking of a very specific superheroic example which i will not name.), despite all of the aforementioned works and countless others yet being quite adept at it. like realistically it would probably suck but the potential is there for it to be good. to say nothing of the composition and soundtrack!!

after what feels like ages i finally wrote a little bit of my boe fic today (which is shaping up to be sort of a cosmic / body horror story on an occupied 'shepherd' planet) and it was soooo fun, i love words, i've been reading so much voice-y horror prose and weird prose lately, i love getting hooked into a character's subjectivity and getting pulled along for the ride. i love to write !!
