Getting the word out today about our #hayian relief campaign. We were invited to speak on WLS radio station. Thanks Bruce Wolf & Dan Proft. Thanks guys! #givelights #wattsoflove. Image by @peterzimm
Yesterday, we introduced you to Dénius, a Haitian teen whose life transformed when he received our solar lantern. We were delighted to learn that Dénius’s light immediately began improving his standard of living by allowing him to start a micro business charging locals’ electronics and using airtime minutes to earn money. But even better, we are pleased to see that Denius’s light has become an investment in his own future. Since he and his younger brother Amisson no longer wonder how they will be able to eat today, both boys have returned to school and look forward to the many opportunities now within their reach. Unfortunately, the pursuit of education has become a luxury in this country, where only the wealthiest Haitians can afford to go to school. The Haitian Education and Leadership organization reports that only 60% of Haitian children will have a chance to attend primary school. Of that 60%, a mere 20% can afford to continue on to secondary school. As it stands, a little more than half of all Haitians over the age of 15 can read or write. Watts of Love knows that light is power, because it provides people with the opportunity to work and learn. Since visiting Haiti in June to equip teachers and orphans with the tools they need to see, read and succeed, we have seen the need for solar relief firsthand, and we look forward to returning with more. Every child deserves the chance to achieve. Donate today at wattsoflove.org and help us empower young people to dream of greater possibilities.
Light = Ingenuity! For far too many families in rural Haiti, childhood is spent working hard to help put food on the table. Dnius Joseph (right) is no stranger to labor. Following the death of his parents a few years back, Dnius was forced to drop out of school to take any work he could get, and still, he and his brother Amisson, 13 (left), struggled everyday to overcome starvation. Unable to earn enough money to support the both of them by selling pig feed in his village market, Dnius wondered how they would make it through another hungry night. Then everything changed when we lit his life. With his brand-new solar panel lantern, Dnius is now able to charge the cell phone he obtained to sell airtime minutes in his village, increasing his income and allowing him to further invest in his feed business. The same profit he would ultimately see in two weeks’ time now arrives within one to two days, and his opportunity to earn is doubled on the weekends when he can bring his solar light to market to charge electronic devices. Slowly but surely, solar power is pulling these brothers out of poverty. They even use their lantern at night to study since being able to return to school. Watts of Love is proud to learn that together, we can make a brilliant difference for children living on the fringe of darkness, proving that light is power! Donate today at www.wattsoflove.org and illuminate lives!

This little boy could not stop staring at his new light. All 7 of his brothers and sisters can now study at night.
A child in an electrified household reads or studies 48 minutes longer per day than a child in an un-electrified household. Light=Education
Our first shipment to Mozambique, Africa. We are so excited to send 200 solar lights with cell phone chargers to pilot a program for widows with IRIS Global. They will identify those who can use the lights to start their own micro-business. #iris #Africa #Mozambique #wattsoflove #dogood #love #charity

Every so often in my career, I stumble on a face or smile that seems custom designed for me to photograph. This was one of those faces. This boy's face from Ilin Island brought me such joy the moment saw it. I ran across this image while cleaning up my hard drive and I really needed to see it at the moment I did. This image reminded me that despite any obstacles or how helpless I might feel at times to just keep working to help little faces like this one. Hope I get to go back to Ilin island soon with @watts_of_love and see this face again in person. Light=Health. Kerosene emissions include carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and black carbon. All these toxins are being inhaled by families using kerosene as a light source. Fine particles of black carbon (soot) clogs the respiratory system, leading to chronic pulmonary disease. Photographer @jegsa
