the sandhill crane is a large crane species found primarily in north america, as well as a small portion of siberia. although sandhill cranes are large, somewhat intimidating birds, they are primarily herbivorous and feed on grasses and grains; occasionally they will take small mammals, reptiles, insects and snails. with a large wingspan of 5-7 feet, they are skilled soaring birds, and only occasionally flap their wings during flight, using thermals to keep themselves in the air while conserving energy. sandhill cranes are social birds that are typically found living either in pairs or in large colonies. x
